Chapter Three

1774 Words
Xavier's POV I watched the door close and my fingers itched to be tangled in her hair the way it was last night. I sat down at my huge desk and sighed deeply. I opened up the mind-link and asked my Beta to come back. And to bring my rival Beta with him, who worked here to keep the peace. I hated that I had to work so closely with the largest pack of wolves out there. But to keep the madness down to a minimum, I'd do just about anything. Being the Alpha King doesn't mean that you are loved and respected by everybody. My own people would try to have me killed just to get my position taken away from me. The Vampires have already tried. They accused me of killing one of their own in cold blood just for being on my land. That was a lie though. The young woman they speak of is still alive and works closely with my sister and her husband. They have a son who is challenged mentally and she is the stay in nurse. She is like family to us and I would never kill my family. So that claim was thrown out when I showed them proof that she was still alive and well. The office door opened, taking me out of my thoughts. My Beta Ian shook his head with an annoyed look on his face. It wasn't until I looked behind him to see Beta Zeke and my secretary arguing in low and what looked like angry whispers. "What's going on there?" I asked Ian while staring out the open door at them. "He and his girlfriend broke up and he has been pouty all day. I guess you asking him to come with me made him excited because he would get to see her." He said. He and the Beta had a better relationship than I did, so he was closer to Zeke, where I didn't even know he had a girlfriend at all. Everyone here knew he had his eyes on a woman he decided for his chosen mate, but no one ever met her nor has he spoken much of it. So I assumed she bailed or told him no. I focused my hearing at what they were saying. Heck, I didn't even know her name, and if it hadn't been for her working here I would not have found out what it was. "I told you I was sorry!" he said harshly while leaning down over the desk. "And I told you I would get my things from the apartment. I'm not sleeping there after what you and Rachel did in it. So leave me alone, Zeke!" She directed her attention back to her computer. "I can get you fired!" Her head snapped back to him, her eyes fixated in a glare. "Excuse me?" She sounded really sexy when she was pissed off. "Zeke, I don't take too kindly to threats." She snapped at him and stood up from her seat. I turned my attention back to the couple when he growled at her. Clearly, she had no clue what we were or she wouldn't have deliberately angered the Beta. Us wolves were full of pride and didn't like to be talked down to by a weaker species. Especially a human, and boy was that human body capable of doing great things. She smiled at him like she expected that reaction from him, such a sweet smile at that. Made me remember what those lips could do when wrapped around my c**k. I adjusted my pants when I felt them getting tighter. Her gaze went to me briefly, then back to Beta Zeke. "Yeah, that's what I thought. You can stand there and act all tough if you want, but deep down you are just angry because I found out you were cheating on me. It isn't my fault you can't keep your d**k in your pants and out of my step-sister." Damn, he cheated on her? That only meant i was a rebound. I smirked and my Wolf felt the intent I was having now. "Or maybe I can ask my step-brother for advice? You know, your best friend!" She told him and he took a step back. "You wouldn't dare?" He gritted at her. Who was her step-brother? I am in need of answers here. "I would, and if you ever threaten me again or my job. I'll file a report with HR! Or I will go right to our CEO and tell him I'm being threatened." I heard Ian chuckle and that's when Zeke realized we could hear them. He looked at her with a scowl on his face before leaving. "Girl has fire, even for a human!" Ian chuckled again while going over and closing the door since Zeke ran off. I watched her sit down and place her face in her hands. The door closed before I saw anything else. "What was the meeting for anyway?" Ian asked as he came over and sat on one of the seats in front of my desk. "Well, I was going to tell you and Zeke that I found my mate but I think it should wait." I told him nonchalantly, though I did have a huge smile on my face. "You found your mate? Why didn't you say something sooner?" He asked me, a huge grin on his face now too. "Because now it's going to cause an issue with Jim's pack!" I said, my smile dropping a bit after learning who she is or was to the Beta. I always wondered why none of us had ever met her before and why Zeke himself always smelled like lemon. Was he ashamed to be smitten with a human? I would never. As long as she was good to me and treated me as good as I did her, then I'd never care what she was. Even a despicable Vampire would do as long as she loved me like I knew I would her. "Why? Who is she?" Ian asked while scratching his head. "Esme is my new secretary, and the Dhark Crystal's supposed Beta Female." I growled. "Damn!" He looked at the door where on the other side of it she sat. "How the hell do you think you can bring it up. It's obvious she doesn't know what Zeke is, let alone us." I nodded, I could gather that much. Because if she did know who I was she probably wouldn't have slept with me last night. I also would have marked her had I not been so intoxicated and that it would have just been confusing for her.. "I'll tell her. "Just let's see how this plays out with her and Beta Zeke!" I smirked at Ian and he rolled his eyes. "Dude, you are gonna get me killed." I shrugged. "You are her Beta now too. You don't have to be seen to watch over her." He growled but nodded his head. For the next few hours, I went through my scheduled meetings that I had to reschedule for today and tomorrow because I was out for the last two weeks dealing with a pack dispute. As much as i love being off work and can shift whenever I need to, I also enjoy being back behind a desk here in the city of Manhattan. I always loved the way humans evolved and congregated together in this city. New York was my second favorite place to be. When it was lunch time, I waited for Esme to come in and join me like I requested this morning, but after fifteen minutes had passed, I reached up and hit the buzzer on her desk. I picked up the phone and waited for her to answer it. Only it went to voicemail, the sound of her cheery voice filled my ears at how sweet it sounded, letting the person who called she was on break and would be back soon. I hung up the phone and got up from my desk. I walked over and opened the door, only to find her desk empty. I heard the elevator ding so I went to the wall and peered around it and watched the doors open. She was walking back with food in her hands. I quickly went back into my office but left the door open. I sat down and waited for her to come around the corner. When she did, she stopped when we locked gazes suddenly. I leaned back and picked up a fry from my togo box of food. She sighed and walked in, I motioned to the chair in front of the desk and she slowly came over to it after she closed the door, and sat down. "Sorry I'm late. My ex canceled my card and i had to go to the bank to grab some money for the delivery guy." She said softly and opened up her bag of Chinese food. It smelled really good and my mouth watered at the scent. I shook off the feeling and grabbed my burger and took a nice big bite. I chewed on my bite before deciding to speak. "So, how do you like the job so far?" I asked, trying to make conversation. "It's alright...I guess!" Her eyes roamed around the office. She stopped at my bookshelf and I looked over at it. It was filled with history books about Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, anything supernatural. I'm sure it was up there. "You can read them anytime you want. I don't mind." I smiled, thinking about her reading through the books and learning what she can about us without actually realizing we were real. "No thank you, I'd probably ruin them. They look expensive anyways." Her eyes lingered on the bookshelf before she turned and looked at me as she slowly ate her lunch. "Are you gonna fire me?" She asked me after five minutes of staring and silence. "Now why would I fire you?" She shrugged her shoulders. "Because we f****d!" My eyes widened in amusement at how blunt she was. She wasn't ashamed to admit what we had done so adamantly. She leaned back in her seat while taking a bite of her egg roll. "And because of my boyfriend, well, ex-boyfriend now. He may cause issues for me if he finds out." "Then let him find out. From what I heard he cheated on you, I don't mind being a rebound whenever you want to feel something." I smirked at her and she quirked an eyebrow up at me.
