Xavier's POV
I sat at a good distance from the motel, but close enough so I could still hear if something happened.
I didn't like the area she chose. It was a spot that was frequented by drug addicts, drunks, criminals, and various supernaturals. Mostly vampires. But the owner was a nice old lady and was tough.
"You're getting mighty close to the barrier between the lines of your highness!" An older man with a raspy voice said. My wolf growled at him as he turned to look at him.
"I don't mean to pry, I'm just warning you that the Vampire King will have his men kill you if you get even just a few feet too close." He put her hands up and nodded towards the woods behind the motel. "There's atleast two dozen waiting to strike."
I glanced towards the woods and focused my sight. I saw a few of those slimy vampires standing there smirking. I growled knowing they could hear it.
"Whatever it is you're here for, I'm sure it's being taken care of." I ignored him and laid back down. I knew he was speaking of the one pump that was down there sitting in the car waiting for his client to finish up her job.
He stood there until daylight began to trickle through the trees, then he had to leave by that time. Only higher-raked vampires could stand out in the sunlight and not burn. Or if they had drunk enough blood, they could stand out in the sun for an hour or two.
Newborns too. They could go around for nearly two weeks before the need to hide in the shadows forces them back underground.
My wolf rose to his feet and stretched out his front legs by leaning down towards the ground with them outstretched forward. When he was done, he stood, then shook out our fur and stood tall on the small hill we were on as the sun shone on us brightly, warming us.
My black fur had a golden glow to it when we were in the sunlight, but under the moonlight it was like a blue hue. Made my fur look like a midnight hue covered it at night. It was majestic even when I saw him.
We took another glance at the motel before we decided to head back home to the castle.
After a thirty minute run, I made it back home. I shifted back to my human form just as I reached the large back windows of the castle. They were big enough for our wolves to jump though after shifting and were always kept open.
I opened up the door just under the windows and walked in. A servant quickly came over with a pair of shorts in her hands while avoiding her gaze. "Thank you, Ellie!" I thanked the omega. She nodded her head and rushed off to do her work. I slipped on my shorts and walked out of the room.
I was starving and wanted something to eat. I also had to call my contact back to see if he had found out anything on my mate. After overhearing her argument with Beta Zeke yesterday and how he seemed a little scared of her step-brother, I had to know who he was.
Getting to the kitchen, the chef smiles at me. "The usual sir?" He asks with a small shake of his head. I chuckled. "Yes, over easy egg with toast and-"
"One black coffee! Now shoo.. I'll bring it to you in your office." He waved me away. I chuckled again. He was a nice man, he was there for me when my parents died as I was there for him when his wife died.
I turned around and walked out of the kitchen and headed up the stairs. I still had an hour to kill before I had to get ready for work. I opened up my office door and walked in.
I went over and sat down at my desk, and no sooner than I did the phone rang. I picked up the phone and put it to my ear. "Russo!" I said gruffly.
"Triple X! Buddy! Have I got some news for you!" My friend basically yelled on the other end of the phone.
"Pete! Calm down! How much cocaine have you had today already?" I asked him. If he was going to act like this, I was going to cut him off by locking him in the cells for a few months.
"Just a gram, but dude your girl," he chuckled and sniffed. "She comes from, high power buddy. For a human I mean!" He chuckled again.
"Can you just spit it out, Pete?" I growled, annoyed. "Who is her step-brother?"
"Her mother married James Dhark!" He said with a sinister chuckle. "Your mate is the step-daughter to your biggest rival! So who are y-" I growled and hung up the phone as he began asking me a question. I knew once he started he wouldn't stop. Damn addict.
I opened up my laptop and searched up James' second wife's name. I met her a couple of times at a few meetings. She was a vampire. The articles I find have many pictures of his wife but none of his step-daughter. But she's mentioned many times, even Jimmy says in a few interviews how much he adores his step-sister.
Rachel doesn't talk about her much, just acknowledges her as family. I scrolled for fifteen minutes before I came across a really old article with Esme's mother's birth name in the title.
'Mother, Katherine kills boyfriend after he attacks her daughter!'
The article didn't mention much, but it did have a picture of Katherine and Esme sitting in the back of an ambulance while a paramedic wrapped a bandage over Katherine's head. Esme's small preteen form was hugging her mother's side tightly in the picture and it made my heart clench.
I closed the laptop feeling like I had found out too much. That was not my business to find out yet. I checked the time and decided it was time to get ready. I finished my cup of coffee that was brought in while I was doing my research and scooped up my last bite of toast with some egg.
I got up and left my office, I then headed for my bedroom. I stripped out of the shorts I was in once I was in my luxurious bathroom. The tiles were all dark grey on both the floors and the walls. The ceiling was an off white. The faucets were made of the finest steel and in the best brand for my bathrooms in the entirety of the castle.
I flipped on the light switch in the bathroom, not really needing it to see but I needed it to shave once I had finished with my shower.
**********
Arriving at the office building, I sipped my coffee as I got out of my sports car. Preferably I liked my truck because I had it built up and it made a nice noise when you revved up the engine. But today I was running late and needed the speed, so I got into the small sports car. Still loud but not like my truck.
After getting up to the top floor, I made my way to my office. As I turned the corner, I didn't see my secretary at her desk. I checked my watch to see if I was misreading my clock earlier, because I've been known to do that sometimes. No I didn't. And her things weren't there either. I shrugged it off and went into my office while leaving my door open. I'll scold her for being late when she gets in.
An hour went by when I finally got a call from Ian. I answered it quickly with worry eating away at me. "What happened?"
I heard him chuckle. "Nothing too serious. Seems after you left someone had been drinking all night and deciding to go and sit by the pool. She ended up falling in." He lightly chuckled again.
"So she's drunk?" I asked him.
"Yes. She also called her ex, so Zeke showed up wondering why I was there. I told him that my card had been found on her and that the owner had called me." I scrubbed a hand down my face.
I was glad he was quick on his feet to cover why he was there. I just didn't like that Beta Zeke was now there to comfort her while she was inebriated. But I cannot be mad at who she had a life with before me. I've had many before her, one that keeps coming back for more.
"Cover your scent, Ian. Dont let him know you are watching her."
"Yes my King!" He hung up the phone and I sighed a breath of relief. I picked up the phone again and called in a temp for her spot to be filled in for today.
About half an hour later, my office door burst open.
I slowly look up from my laptop, roll my eyes, then take my reading glasses off that I've only recently been prescribed.
"How long has it been going on?" He snarled at me.
I leaned back in my leather chair and just stared at him. "Care to clarify, Beta?" I asked my rival's second in command.
"How long have you and my girl been sleeping together?" His eyes turned onyx, telling me his wolf was below the surface. I only smirked at him and let mine come forward.
I got up from my chair and turned to start staring out the window. I'm surprised it took him this long to scent me on her. It's not like we used any form of protection, so my scent would be all over her.
"Depends on what she has said!" I wasn't admitting anything, even though the proof was in her pores. The Beta was angry and she was human. I wasn't risking her safety with my answer.
"She said nothing. I saw the bite marks all over her body, then I smelt you all over her as I changed her out of her wet clothes." He growled at me. I looked over my shoulder at him. His hands were fisted together and I honestly have to say I admired how he felt about her.
"I'll answer your question ,Zeke." He narrowed his eyes at me. "As long as you answer mine." He said nothing, as expected.
"Why did you cheat on her if you didn't expect her to go out and do the same?" The tight fist he held his hands in loosened some and the rage in his eyes softened to a lesser tone. "I didn't know she was your beloved, Zeke. Not until yesterday."
His shoulders sagged some. "She's human, you're a hybrid. Does she know?" I asked him.
He looked away from me and I growled. It was against the law to have a human in the confines of werewolf territories unless they knew of our existence. So far, I've let it slide because Esme is my mate, but they all know that law. It's been there for centuries for a reason, so our secret doesn't get out.
"Her mother is our former Luna, she knows the truth." So he is bound by oath not to tell her? That's bullshit. I'm curious if he was ordered not to claim her as his chosen too. She's smart enough to be a great Beta Female.
"Then why doesn't her daughter know?" I snapped. It made no damn sense the more I thought about all of it.
"I don't know the story. You have to ask Alpha James and Luna Katherine about it. It has something to do with her childhood and her father." He said, and I pinched the bridge of my nose, getting a headache.
"We're all of you bound to keep it a secret?" I asked him. If the pack was ordered, then I couldn't punish them, only the Alpha and Luna.
He nodded his head. "Yes," I sighed.
Might as well tell the poor guy now so he doesn't hear it from her parents later when I visit them about this crap. "Listen, Zeke." I motioned for him to sit. He chose to stand, his choice I guess. "The night I met Esme I learned something." He growled. I rolled my eyes at him even though I was thinking about that tight snatch of hers. "I learned that she was my fated mate."
I watched his eyes go from their normal human color again to obsidian in an instant, his canines elongated and I could see fur sprout on his arms. I just sat back down in my chair and leaned back on it. He wasn't stupid enough to attack me. His King. I didn't tell the goddess to make Esme my mate, she did that all on her own.
"You will regret ever putting that d**k of yours inside MY woman!" he roared as he stormed out of my office. I couldn't help the chuckle that left me as I thought about him calling her 'his' woman.
Clearly, he didn't know me well enough.
