There was barely a distance of two inches between David and the spears, they were so close and any wrong movement would have David perforated and full of holes like a fishing net. So basically he was stuck looking at spears that were mere inches away from killing him, and beyond them was an endless abyss of darkness, it was not fun, not one bit. Then David heard clangs and groans, as gears began to shift and grind against each other. The spears began to retract, pulling back into the darkness until there was nothing there but a big black hole.
