CHAPTER TENOn the day of the Razghadi supper, Prince Gregor insisted on sending his own capacious carriage to convey the Megherny party to his Palace. The Countess, Konstantina and the Baron gathered at the appointed hour in the hall. Since Konstantina had agreed to marry the Baron, he had seemed ill at ease with her and she had gradually become convinced that he was as unenthusiastic as she was at the idea of their marriage. Why he had persisted in making a proposal to her remained a mystery. It was a mystery she lacked the will to solve, brooding still on the billet doux. Prince Gregor’s carriage arrived and with it came the strange request that Grete join the party.
