Forcing herself to act, Konstantina slipped quietly from the bed and moved to the railings that ran around the little gallery. Heart in her mouth, she peered through. A gentleman in a flowing dark cape was pacing the floor. All she could see was the top of his head, but this was enough for her to see that it was not the Baron, at least. She leaned her forehead on the railing with relief, then almost immediately drew back as she heard the sound of a horse outside. The gentleman below stopped pacing and turned to the door. It opened and there stood – the Countess Mordhile. Konstantina stifled a gas
