CHAPTER SIX“I puts the lady in the mornin’ room, my Lady,” the nightwatchman said. Romana did not reply, she was already halfway down the stairs. She ran down them, seeing that the hall below was lit by only two candles in one of the silver sconces, and opened the door of the morning room. Here the only light was from the candelabrum on the writing table, but it was enough for her to see a veiled figure standing by the fireplace. As she came into the room, the veil was raised and Romana gave a cry of delight. “Nicole, dearest! I have wanted so much to see you. Why are you here?” She did not wait for an answer but ran across the room to put her arms round Nicole and kiss her on the cheek. Even as she did so, because they were so closely attuned Romana knew that Nicole was perturbed.
