Chapter 1

2019 Words
Alex "Miss?" I heard a male voice call out. "Miss, we're here," the voice said again, and I jerked awake. I looked around me and that was when I realized that I had fallen asleep. I was in a taxi, going to the company where I was supposed to have my interview for a new job. I apologized and paid the cab driver his money, quickly getting out of his car, so he could be on his way. I looked at the huge building and sighed, calming my nerves a little bit before making my way to the doors of the building. I had over the weekend seen an advert on TV that said the company needed a graphic designer, and I was hopeful I would be picked. The salary seems promising and it would mean a lot to me. I currently work as a waiter in a bar, but the pay is nothing to write home about. It has been difficult securing a good-paying job since I left college. I looked at my phone, after trying and failing to remember the particular floor and office where the interview was to be held. After refreshing my memory, I quickly got into the elevator and made my way up. The elevator stopped on my desired floor, and I walked out of it. I looked around before making any move, trying to figure out which direction I was supposed to go in. I walked past the people that were gathered and saw that a woman was sitting on a chair in the hallway, with a clipboard in her hand. "Hi, Miss. I'm here for the job interview." I said to her eagerly, and then she raised her head to look up at me with narrowed eyes. "What is your name?" She asked me. "It's Alex, Alexandria Castle." "Well, Miss Alexandria Castle, the interview that you came for, ended fifteen minutes ago," the woman harshly. I gasped as my eyes widened. I checked my phone to confirm what she had said and honestly, she was right. I quietly thanked the woman and made my way out of the building. I was so disappointed but tried assuring myself that I would someday get a better-paying job Just then, a call came to my phone. I pulled it out of my handbag, and the caller id said it was my mom. I sighed as I watched it ring. I was only ten years old when my mother left me and my dad, she had over the years never bothered to come back to check on me or how I was doing or my father who died a few months after she left. The story of why and how my mother left is a story for another day. I lived and grew up with my aunty, my father's elder sister. We hadn't been in contact for so long until she suddenly called my phone one day. She claimed to have gotten my contact off my social media account and has been pestering me about coming over to New York to visit her and the man she left my dad and me for. I sighed again as I watched the phone ring, and to be honest, I wasn't in the mood to talk to her at the moment because of how angry and frustrated I was, but I ended up picking up the call. "Hello? Alex, are you there?" She asked when I didn't say anything after picking up the call. "Yes, I'm here. Aren't I the one that picked up your call? Say what you want so I can get back to what I was doing," I said impatiently. "Well, I have good news. I spoke with my husband, and I was able to convince him to open up a space for you to work in his company. Well technically his son's company, since they are the ones running it," she explained, excitedly. Normally, that would have made me happy, if the offer was from someone else, but coming from the woman who abandoned me when I was only ten, and the man who she left me for only made me angry. "Who the hell do you think you are?" I asked, my voice becoming stern and serious. "Why do you feel the need to meddle in my life now, when you weren't even around for most of it?" "Do you get some sort of high from doing this to me all the time? Leave me alone, how hard is that for you to understand?" I screamed into the phone, looking around to see if anyone was around, but there was no one. "Alex, I'm not doing this to make your life difficult. I'm your mother, and the last thing I'd want is to see you suffer. I'm only trying to help," she explained. "I don't need it. For the umpteenth time, I do not need your help. I declined the job offer, and even if I lost all chances to get a job anywhere else, I would still decline. Please, I'm begging you don't call me again, and stop calling yourself my mother, My mother died twelve years ago," I yelled at her. With that, I hung up and sighed heavily. On realizing it was almost time for my shift at the bar, I rushed to the bus stop and hailed a cab. I gave it the address of the bar where I work as an attendant and sat back, hoping that by the time I reached there, I would feel better. I didn't. All that had happened that day refused to leave my head, and there was a deep frown on my face as I made my way into the bar. I went straight to the locker room to change into my uniform and came out. I expected to see Kara already there working, but she was nowhere to be found. Kara is my best friend, We have been close friends since college and we practically do most things together. I decided to ask around for her, in case anyone had seen her. No one had any idea where she was, and then I saw the bartender and decided to ask him. "Hey," I greeted. "Hi, Alex. How're you doing today?" He asked. "I'm good," I said as I nodded my head, joy wanting to talk about all I had been through that day. "Have you seen Kara? I've searched everywhere for her, but I can't find her, and she's never late," "Oh, I think I heard the boss saying that she took a sick leave today," "Really? But she never told me anything about that," I thought out loud, and the guy shrugged. "Okay, thank you for telling me. I'll have to go see her after work," I smiled at him in appreciation, before walking away. I went on with my work as usual, feeling a little worried about Kara. I had to deliver drinks to different tables and take orders, and that meant walking back and forth so my mood soured because my legs hurt. There was a certain table where I was meant to deliver drinks but was reluctant because of the way one of the men at the table stared at me. I shook it off and walked towards the table. I took the drinks off the tray and placed them on the table, one after the other, and turned to walk away when I felt a hand slap my ass. I turned around to see the creep who had been staring at me, smiling up at me, disgustingly. "Excuse me, I would appreciate it if you respect me and do me the favor of not touching me again because if you do, I will forget that you're a customer, and do whatever I see fit," I said and turned to walk away again, but it seemed. My warning fell on deaf ears. I was pulled back by my left arm so hard, that I dropped the tray I was holding in surprise, and I fell into the man's thighs, my back facing him. He wrapped his hand around me and squeezed my breasts as his friends laughed at me. I struggled to push his hand away, but he wasn't budging, so I bent my head raised one of his hands, and bit him so hard that I tasted blood. He screamed in pain as his friends stopped laughing and all the people around us were now looking at us, wondering what was going on. I turned around to face him and gave him the hardest slap I could with all the strength in me. The sound of the slap resonated and it was heard over the music. "What the hell did you just do?" He screamed at me. " Do you have any idea who I am?" "I don't know who you are, and neither do I care. If you were someone of importance, you wouldn't stop so low as to do something so disgusting. You're an embarrassment to mankind. Men like you deserve to burn in hell," I retorted and his face contorted in anger. I could tell that he was about to pounce on me, and I can as getting myself ready when the manager came in between the two of us. "May I know what is happening here?" He asked, looking at me for an answer, but I gave none and looked away. "This t**t doesn't know how to treat customers. I wanted to use some of the services rendered here, and she dared to bite and slap me!" The disgrace of a human said, and his cheeks had turned an angry shade of red. I did a really good job. "You call sexually harassing me, services. Which part of our services has prostitution listed there, Even if I were a prostitute, I deserve all the respect in the world as a woman. You don't just touch me anyhow you li-" "Be quiet!" The manager interrupted me, and I frowned confused. He looked away from me and turned to the man, apologizing and begging him to forgive me. "I'm not going to stop the commotion unless that t**t apologizes to me on her knees," the harasser said, and I smirked. Never in my lifetime, would I ever do that. "Get down and apologize," The manager said to me, and my eyes widened in disbelief. Was he serious? "Get down, now!" "I'm sorry, I cannot do that. This is clearly in the wrong, but you're refusing to see that because your a suck-up, a piece of s**t that doesn't know anything other than money," I vented at my boss. Everyone around had stopped to watch, even the music had stopped, and I didn't even notice. "Then, you're fired. Pack your things and leave." my boss angrily said to me. I smirked, looking him in the eye. "Gladly," I gave the harasser one last look. "You're lucky I didn't get to scratch out your eye," I said before finally taking my leave. I walked to the locker room, changed out of their stupid uniform, threw it on the floor stepped on it, and made my way out of the bar, not once looking back. I got out of the building, the cold breeze brushing my hair back. It sucked that I got fired, but I was happy that I got to say what I wanted to. It has to be the worst day of my life. So many things had happened, and at the end of the day, I was completely jobless. I picked up my phone to call my boyfriend to see if I could come to spend the night with him after checking on Kara. But after several attempts to call him, he wasn't answering his calls, so I gave up and decided to head to Kara's house, so I could spend the rest of my day there since I had nothing else to do. Little did I know that what I had been through that day was nothing but the tip of an iceberg.
