Chapter 6

ALEX Light rushed into my eyes and I scrunched my face in annoyance I cracked my eyes open and my hand instinctively went up to shield my poor eyes from the harsh light that poured into them. I caught my mother trying to open yet another curtain and I groaned in displeasure. "What's going on?" I asked and stifled a yawn but my mother didn't answer until she had won the battle between her vs the curtains. "You need to be dressed in five minutes, the driver is bringing the car around in ten," she said and started to walk away. " Wait... Wait. Where are we going? " I tried to ask groggily but she was already gone leaving the previous vague information for my consumption. An irritating sigh left my lips as I have never felt so miserable, first I was awakened by my stupid stepbrother and the w***e he came home with, and now I was been irked by my mother who seem not to have a clue about how to be a proper mum. I was still in bed when one of the maids walked. “good morning Miss Alex, Madam has asked that you join her as soon as possible,” “Thanks, tell her I will join her soon,” I said, and the maid walked out. with a resigned sigh, I grudgingly got up from the bed to go shower. I got dressed quickly while wondering what it was that my mother had us doing in the next five minutes. I walked downstairs, the stairs making only the clicking sound from my boots, as my hand trailed down the steps my mind immediately realized something. 'wouldn't Richard be at breakfast? ' the thoughts flooded my head and somehow I shook them off. 'and so what? What if he was at breakfast? He could suck it for all I care' I still thought and held my head up high as I saw my mother dishing out spoonfuls of food. The sight was shocking but I didn't want to sour the mood by asking her if she thought she looked good and motherly dishing out food. Instead, I sat at the table and noticed with relief that Richard was missing. "Where are we going?" I suddenly asked but Mr. Devile was more interested in reading the newspaper than even acknowledging that his wife and myself were leaving the house. "Not now Alex, just eat quickly and meet the driver outside. I don't want to have to wait for you" she said and drew her chair and started to walk away... Again. I paused, my brows furrowing. 'what the actual f**k was happening?' I asked myself and yet there were no answers. Even for her, she was behaving weirder than usual and it was getting worrying. First, she woke me up abruptly and forced me to dress up for something I didn't know. I hadn't had up to five spoonfuls of food when a horn sounded from outside, my cue to meet her outside. "was there any patience left in the world?" — I muttered to myself as I saw myself drawing my chair and walking briskly towards the door. The moment I came out, my eyes met hers and they were frowning. "Today!??" She screamed at me and I wanted to so badly turn around and close the door and just shout f**k this because where were we even heading to? I walked towards the other passenger door and opened "s**t!" I shouted and closed it back, racing back inside the house. "Where are you going!!?" My mother screamed from behind me but I said nothing and quickly rushed to my room, I had forgotten to take my purse. I rushed into my room and skidded to a halt. "What are you doing!?" I shouted in horror, my mouth and hands running agape. "Why are you throwing my clothes out!?" I asked again but the maids had stilled in fear as pieces of information started to connect. "Who asked you to do this ?" I asked again but when the maids started to twitch their fingers and look across the room except at me, I didn't need them to tell me who authorized such an order. There were only two people who had that power, one had nothing to do with me and the other one was outside currently asking the driver to continue pressing the horn of the car as though it was a school alarm. Anger channeled through me, my hands snatched the purse and I made a 360 turn back to where I had just left, the front door I had so graciously closed on my way back in was pushed open forcefully and I stood with my hands by my side and my body trembled. "Who gave you the right to ask those maids to not just go through my things but to throw out all of my clothes into a bin!?" I asked and to my surprise, she rolled her eyes. "Well since the surprise has been ruined, get in the car. We're going shopping" she said and my body trembled. " Not even a fake apology? " I asked and she sighed. " We've got an appointment, I don't like not showing up for what I have already booked a date for," she said and I scoffed. " That's funny considering I'm still standing here," I said and she ignored me. " Are you getting in or do we fetch those fashion errors from the bin? " she asked and despite myself, I walked to the car and sat in, maintaining my distance the moment the car revved to life and sped out of the mansion. We arrived at a shopping mall that looked more like a palace than a plaza and immediately my mother opened the door, she was directed to another place and my mother looked like she knew the place better than who was supposed to be her guide and I just trailed behind her like some lost kid. "Is this her?" The woman who came out of nowhere asked and my mother gave me such a downsized look, that I almost looked at myself. "Please, get her clothes that wouldn't be too embarrassing, I've seen a lot of traumatic things lying in her wardrobe already," my mother said and the woman shared a laugh. I couldn't believe my mother would say something like that but I wasn't allowed to even defend myself when they all walked away and I was led like a pig to slaughter. A rack was brought before me and my mother outstretched her hand as though she was in a commercial, despite myself I started to pick some clothes and immediately found a changing area. The first cloth I came out with, my mother only needed to give me a look before I went back into the area to change it. "What are you? 4?" She asked after my fourth change. " What's wrong with this one? " I asked, already getting irritated. " It looks like you can give it to a child, you're supposed to make a fashion statement not bring it down" she hissed and I frowned deeply. I ignored her words and went back to the changing area where a black strapless gown caught my eye. I smiled as I wore it, my sides showing and the slit at the front doing the dress justice. Excitement bubbled in my chest as I walked out of the changing area with elegance, I loved the feel of the material, so soft, so smooth so — "What are you wearing?" She suddenly spat and my breath hitched in my throat. "What?" I asked and she weirdly looked at me. "You can't wear that," she said and I frowned. " Why? " I challenged, already spiking my nerves. "Can't you see how flaky your skin is? Your loose skin at the sides and your thighs are too long. I'm surprised you're even my daughter, you look nothing like me and if I wanted to have a puppet, I would dress it in that dress and have you sing in the background" she said to the salesgirl, or was she the owner of the shop, chuckled. I have never felt as embarrassed as I did, immediately ripped the dress from my skin whilst I stood in front of them, snatched my clothes from the clothing line, and wore it. "You didn't need to give us a show, if we wanted that we could have ordered wine... Hey! Where are you going?" She suddenly shouted but I was no longer paying any attention. I knew I should have said f**k this a long time ago, so f**k this and I'm out of here.
