LIAM POV:
I close the pasture gate as I watch Lacie walk off towards the house. I catch one final trace of her sent before turning and heading to the stables.
“Dante we can’t have negative thoughts like that. She is human. Humans don’t reject their mates; it just doesn’t happen because humans can’t mate a werewolf!” I try and cheer him up, which obviously isn’t working since hello, who has ever heard of a human mate?! He is acting so dramatic when nothing has even happened yet.
“Have you ever had a mate before wise guy? No? Ha didn’t think so! Well neither have I in all my human lives and I’m not ready to lose my first mate ever the same day we found her. YOU ARE 28! Have you ever heard of an un mated Alpha this old?” Dante snaps back at me.
“Touché.”
I open the door to the small guest room of the stables and walk over to the bed before plopping down heavily. Ugh, as if the weight of today wasn’t enough, I’ve felt Ryan trying to mind-link me for the past 20 minutes, I open the connection with a sigh.
“Yes Ryan, what can I do for you?” I ask in a lazy tone. Probably something stupid like always.
“ALPHA LIAM YOU FINALLY ANSWERED YOU NEED TO COME BACK WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!!!” Ryan basically screams over the link.
“Sh*t, what’s going on get me an update! Any injured? Who is attacking? Rogues?!” I jump to my feet, pacing the room.
“It’s rogues! They came in groups of 10, organized and attacking in waves! Liam there’s been almost 30 so far and I fear there’s more to come!”
“How many of our warriors are down?”
“About 20 are injured, 8 of which might not make it through the night and 1 is dead. They got Seth and I don’t know who else will be next. We have all the members that can’t fight in the pack house, it’s all hands-on deck but Liam, I have a bad feeling.”
“Dante link with our warriors, what do they say!?”
“They say the rogues are stronger and larger than normal, it takes 2 of our warriors to take down one of theirs, it’s looking like magic has been us-“ I don’t bother finishing listening before I’m running to the house, I have to leave NOW. I make it to the front steps when Tom almost bumps into me.
“Whoa there Alpha what’s the rush you okay?” Tom asks wary of my crazed look.
“Tom the pack is under attack, rogues are in the safe zone by the pack house and no one knows how they got through our defenses before attacking. I have to leave NOW!” I say in a hurry. I throw my keys and phone to him
“Hold these I’ll be back when I can, get Billie home and stay behind your walls,” I say as I turn to shift. Pausing, I turn back and beg,
“Tom watch over Lacie, I can’t lose the mate I just found. If she asks, tell her EVERYTHING and I do mean everything.”
With that I take off in a sprint shifting before I get his response and jump over the gate. I run at my full speed towards the pack house not caring who sees my huge pure black wolf before I make it into the forest. It will take me 30 minutes by running full speed instead 2 hours driving.
“Ryan I’m headed your way stay strong,” I say before I open the link to my entire pack.
“We are under attack, everyone in the safety zone either get inside or get to the pack house. All others remain at your homes but be alert. ALL WARRIORS REPORT FOR DUTY AND DEFEND OUR PACK!” Dante let’s ear deafening Howl as we push our paws even harder into the forest ground.
TOM POV:
I sigh as I stand from the table shaking my head.
“Kiddo can you sit here just a second? I gotta ask Liam something really quick.” Looking at her worried face, I realize I need to ask Liam what is going on. I know he said she is his fated mate but what all can I tell her?
“Um yeah that’s fine I guess, kinda dodging my question but haha okay” Lacie says in a dismissive voice.
I nod and walk towards the front door. To think I was joking earlier with Billie to match these two up and they turn out to be fated mates! Who would have thought?! I make my way to the porch steps when I almost run square into Alpha Liam. Speak of the devil!
“Whoa there Alpha what’s the rush? You okay?” I ask cautiously, do I see Dante in his eyes?
“Tom the pack is under attack, rogues are in the safe zone by the pack house and no one knows how they got through our defenses before attacking. I have to leave NOW!” he says in a panicked yet authoritative voice. Yikes! Alpha Liam only uses his full Alpha tone when it’s a real emergency
“Hold these I’ll be back when I can, get Billie home and stay behind your walls.” He turns as if to run but then oddly turns back and begs with pain in his voice.
“Tom watch over Lacie, I can’t lose the mate I just found. If she asks, tell her EVERYTHING and I do mean everything.”
Before I have a chance to reply he turns and takes off. About two strides out he explodes into a huge pure black wolf. Shredded clothes fall all around as he keeps running, never missing a step, before jumping our gate and disappearing. That’s an alpha wolf for ya. It never gets old watching a wolf transform. Some are almost normal size and others like Alpha Liam and his father, who are alphas by blood, tower over me even though I’m 6ft. I shake my head to gain my sense back before reaching in my pocket to grab my phone and call Billie. She picks up on the first ring.
“Did I just see Alpha Liam jump our fence?” she asks matter-of-factly. I swear nothing surprises that woman and I chuckle to myself.
“Sure did, there’s been an attack. You need to get in here and arm the gate, then come inside and help me explain all of this to Lacie.” I wait for her response, knowing she’ll ask about Lacie.
“Explain what to Lacie?” she asks. See, I told ya. Billie had gone to town before I had a chance to tell her they are fated mates.
“Just get inside and I’ll explain woman.” I hang up on her, knowing that will make her angry and get her here faster. Hell hath no fury like a wife who got hung up on before questions were answered. I stand at the porch and wait for her as she drives the farm truck to the front porch and hops out. She stomps up to me, wagging her finger.
“Thomas James Langley you better have a daaaaaamn good reason to hang up on me like that,” she scolds with a huff, putting her hands on her hips. Even being a foot shorter than me I still know she is ready to kill a man when she calls me by my full name.
“Now Billie calm down, I only hung up so you would get here faster, I know how it makes you upset,” I say with my hands raised in surrender.
“Makes me upset? Sir I’m not upset I’m livid, now explain!” She says through gritted teeth. They weren’t kidding when they say dynamite comes in small packages.
“Darlin’ listen for a second, you need to breathe, I can see the steam coming from your ears.” I try to soothe her anger as I watch her face go from bright red to a calmer shade of pink.
“Now then, I did all of this because I need your help explaining some stuff to Lacie. She always does best with you.”
“What is so damn important for me to be here for, that I had to hurry home for?”
“Alpha Liam and Lacie are fated Mates” I say matter-of-factly with a nod. Her face, still pink from frustration, goes to a look of surprise, her lips making a small O.
“Alpha Liam and Lacie?! You sure?!” she asks as I nod my head.
“Alpha Liam said so and now Lacie has some questions about him and I need help explaining it so she doesn’t think I’m full of sh*t. Mind coming in to help me now?” I gesture for her to walk ahead of me, smiling as she quickly moves up the steps.
“Well of course! You should have started off with that! I can’t wait to see her face!!” With a little shimmy of her behind she walks inside towards the kitchen. Oh how I love my little piece of dynamite. I follow a step behind and see Lacie sitting in the same place I left her. Billie greets Lacie as she walks towards the table.
“Hey Lacie girl! I heard you have some questions about Mr. Liam, am I right?” She sits in the chair by Lacie and pats her knee. Lacie blushes a deep red and stares at her drink. This is the exact reason is why I thought Billie ought to tell her about Alpha Liam. She does well enough with me but I know she still has trouble with men nonetheless.
“GREAT!” Billie continued,
“Now here’s the thing. I’m gonna tell you a ton of stuff, starting from the beginning and I want you to listen to it ALL before saying anything, okay?” Grinning ear to ear, she gives another tiny wiggle of excitement in her seat. Lacie hesitates before shrugging her shoulders,
“Yeah, I can do that.”
Billie leans back into her chair and looks knowingly at me and I can see the excitement in her eyes. I turn my poker face back on, it’s best to leave all the emotions to the girls in situations like this. Here comes the moment of truth, I think to myself as Billie begins her speech.
