Chapter 9: Newshound, 1921As the door slammed in Carter’s wake, Lew let out a sigh of relief. The temptation to talk had been almost irresistible. Carter gave out an aura of uncomplicated competence that reassured as much as it put his hackles up and he was going mad stuck here without anyone to run his thoughts past. He had tried to extend his Othersense around the policeman to sound him out as a confidante, but he’d not been able to pick up much of anything at all. Carter was deeply buttoned up on all sorts of levels and Lew hadn’t wanted to risk opening himself up to the other man and being rebuffed.
