“I will pray for your safe return.” A plump-looking lady nervously kissed the cheek of a sleeping newborn baby girl. She wiped away her tears as she placed the basket under a big shady oak tree. Quickly she turned and disappeared into the night with the other baby tucked securely under her zipped-up jacket.
Present-day...
That stupid darn alarm deafened me almost every morning. I pulled my duvet up over my head and screamed. Tired was an understatement. I should be used to it by now though. The nightmares I had ever since I can remember, kept me awake for hours and then when I could finally drift off to a relaxed sleep I was rudely awoken by the alarm clock.
Today was the day I dreaded for months since my parents announced we were moving halfway across the world because my dad had an opportunity to build a better business there.
So that was me snatched away from my friends, my life and everything I knew.
Today was the first day at my new school and I would much rather get on a plane and go back home.
“Sassie, come on you don't want to be late for your first day.” my mother bounded into my bedroom and cheerfully opened the curtains allowing the bright sunshine to stream in and practically blind me.
“Yes, Mother.” I rolled my eyes and attempted to get up. My new school clothes were already laid out the night before so all I needed to do was shower quickly and get dressed, do my hair and teeth and I was ready.
I stared up at the tall, ancient-looking building that was now my new school.
My mother waved me off and I was suddenly alone. I was surrounded by other people dressed the same as me in black blazers and white shirts with a black and red stripy tie, but I must be invisible because nobody batted an eyelid my way.
Making my way up the stairs I entered the building. There was a long corridor and classrooms on either side. The bell rang signalling the start of the school. day, I fumbled In my pocket for my planner to see where I was supposed to be. I did not fancy getting into ink trouble for being late on my first day.
“New kid, huh?”
I whirled around and came face to face with a tall, handsome-looking guy. He was staring at me with an amused expression on his face, his eyes were brown and beautiful. I could not pull myself away from them. They were hypnotic and something about him made me feel relaxed.
I just didn't know what.
“Excuse me?” I managed to choke out.
He chuckled and pointed to the planner in my hands.
“May I?” he reached for it, flipping through it and then handing back to me, he gestured for me to follow him. I did so.
After a few minutes of walking down the never-ending corridor, we reached a door that had the words History over it.
“Names Lenardo but you can call me Lennie.” He smirked as he pushed open the door to my first lesson.
I felt like I wanted the ground to open and swallow me up. This was so embarrassing, everyone's eyes were on me. Well being the new girl, I suppose that's what happens...
“Welcome to my History class, glad you could join us.” the teacher whose name I saw was Mr Waller smiled and ushered me to take a seat. I hurried to the only empty seat which was at the far end of the classroom.
Placing my bag on the table and pulling out my pencil case I lost myself in thought as the teacher rambled on about the first world war.
I didn't see Lennie in my next two classes or even at lunch. Barely anyone bothered me but a girl who seemed to have a lot of classes with me made her way to my table. She placed her lunch tray opposite me.
“Mind If I join you?” she did not wait for a response before plonking herself down in front of me. She was about the same height as me, her jet black hair was long and braided into a French plait. Behind her glasses, I could see she had big brown eyes and a smile that showed off her crooked white teeth.
“So, what's your name?” she bit into an apple and grinned waiting for me to introduce myself.
“Saskia,” I informed her.
“Emerald, but Emie for short. My parents thought being original was the best thing since sliced bread.” She shuddered and I could tell she wasn't too keen on the name choice.
I smiled at her and she laughed.
“So, wanna hang out?” Emie offered me to which I nodded eagerly.
Making at least one friend in this hell hole would make life here at least a little more bearable.
I caught a glimpse of Lennie across the hall, sitting with a group of people laughing loudly at some joke. Something about him made me feel really at ease.
“Are you okay?” Emie eyed me full of concern. I must have looked like a right i***t gazing with my mouth wide open.
“Oh, umm yea of course.” I nodded reluctantly pulling my eyes away from him. Emie turned her head in the direction I had been staring and instantly I felt myself flush red.
She gave me a sympathetic smile as one of the girls with Lennie stood up and full-on kissed him. A chorus of wolf-whistling and cheers erupted around the hall causing a few teachers to demand calmness.
“Is that his girlfriend?” I whispered, not sure I wanted to know the answer. She was like a model, tall and slim with beautiful brunette curls that fell to her waist.
Emie nodded and looked disgusted at the sight of them snogging.
“That's Anaya, they've been an item for about a year now. They are the group we all tend to avoid. You see they are trouble, so best keep out their way.“
I could not help but feel curious about them like something was drawing me to them. I looked back one last time and saw the girl, Anaya, staring straight at me.
“Come on let's go, we have French next and Miss Dion tends to hate it when anyone is late.” Emie stood up and I quickly followed her.
