Vow to Avenge

I was able to gain a few precious moments before any of them came to their senses and rushed after me. My uncle’s voice was loud in my ears as he yelled, “Damn it! Don’t let that b***h get away! Catch her and kill her immediately!” The thought of him wanting me dead was too much to bare. But none of that mattered right now. All my thoughts screamed to run, run as fast as my legs would carry me. Only being seventeen, I wished I was able to obtain my wolf. If I had her then I would have shifted and ran even faster. I hear thrashing behind me. Growls that sounded menacing and ominous to my ears. They have shifted and were now in their wolf forms. Knowing that made my heart twist in panic. It was dark in the forest, only the full moon lighting my way, but lighting theirs as well. Was the moon goddess really going to let my life end like this? Did she even care? Obviously she didn’t if she let an entire pack be annihilated. My breathing was becoming labored, my throat burning, my chest hammering with each pound of my heart. My thighs burned and my feet tore at the ground as I didn’t wear any shoes. My right side was beginning to twist in pain from running too hard and for too long. But I pushed on even harder. I hear a wolf’s howl in the distance just behind me, making my skin crawl. The snow was everywhere, turning my poor feet into numb icicles. I turn slightly behind me just to see them catching up to me. There was now more than two as I spot at least six of them. I wasn’t going to make it. There was no way I could outrun these rogues. They were gaining up on me and once they catch me, who knew what they were going to do to me before they finally give me the final blow to end my life. I couldn’t help the sob that tore through my entire body, making me falter just a bit. Suddenly a small clearing came to view as I thrashed out of the trees and come to a dead stop, eyes wide with terror. No. Please god, no. There really was no hope for me after all. My breathing was erratic, and my limbs were cold and numb. My feet throbbed in pain and my sides burned to where I wanted to double over and rest. Doesn’t matter if I did now, I was dead anyways. I stare down a fifty foot drop of a cliff, straight into a large lake that was just as dark and eerie as this entire night had been. A low growl sounds behind me, making every muscle in my body stiffen with dread. I slowly turned around, tears dropping from my eyelids, my nose running in despair. More than a dozen of them were slowly coming out of the trees, baring their fangs, and snarling with a viciousness that brought fear into my soul. I take a step back in that fear only to stumble on some rocks that were laid there at the edge. My heart wouldn’t stop pounding as I had the lake and full moon to my back and the rogues stalking me to my front. I didn’t know what I could do to get out of this situation. If I jump I would surely die, but I couldn’t just stay here either, since I would be torn to pieces in a gruesome death. Either way, I was dead. Was there really no hope for me? Was this how my life was to end after all? The one in the center gets even closer and snaps his jaws in my direction, causing me to jump in fright. The others then follow suit, also snapping their jaws as if they were playing with me. Slight anger flashes in with the fear that I have. The fact they were taking pleasure in torturing me before they kill me was barbaric and cruel. I cry out when one of them suddenly jumps from the boulder it was perched on and growls, swapping a large paw at me. I stumble again, my foot touching nothing but air. Steadying myself I crouch down as another sob tears through me. “P-Please, don’t do this.” I plead, not knowing what else to do. “Sorry young one, but I can’t have you live.” I flinch at the voice that spoke just behind the wolves. The stranger walks to the front as if he was the most important being among us, followed by my uncle, who wouldn’t even look at me. “U-Uncle…p-please.” I beg him. He just turns away and doesn’t say a word. “He won’t save you. Who do you think was the mastermind of this raid?” I clench my hands into the ground, hurting my fingernails in the process. I stare at my uncle, remembering the words that was said between the two of them before I ran for my life. Did he really betray us? His own family? “You know what? I’ll be nice this once and give you a little knowledge before you die, because regardless of what happens here tonight, you will die.” “Your dear conniving, selfish uncle here was too eager to uphold his part of the deal. My sister, who just so happens to be his awaited mate, for the death of your father, who is my worst enemy. With him out of the way not only do I get his lands, but the removal of the breach between a treaty with the rogues that I can use in any way I want. With the Night Stone pack completely gone, money and glory is to be had and it’s all mine.” I wasn’t sure what he meant by all this, but one thing was for sure. My people, my parents were all dead because of these two assholes right in front of me. Because my uncle was too damn besotted by his mate. He was literally willing to backstab his entire pack, his sister, me, just so he could be in love. How twisted was that? Rage was building within me at the thought he would go so low just for a mate. Our lives meant nothing to him, our kindness, our love…was absolutely s**t to him. “Enough chit chat, say goodbye to your niece Marcus, for it will be the last time you’ll ever see her alive.” My uncle still kept his head turned away and didn’t even acknowledge his words or me. “No? Well, didn’t expect it from you anyways. You really are a slimeball.” The man says with disgust. “The fact my sister is mated with you is pathetic, she deserves so much better.” “I’ll say it then, goodbye sweetheart, maybe in your next life you’ll get a happy ending.” With that he turns away. It was like the signal to the rogues as they all, at once, jump towards me, their mouths wide open with razor sharp fangs. Screaming I stumble backwards and felt nothing but air as I fell to my death. The fall made my body rush with sensations of fear and terror as I gaze up to see the rogues watching me plummet to the ground. A loud smack hits my back, sending thousands of needle picks piercing through my entire system. Deeply submerged in the ice-cold water I sink like a rock, not able to move any part of my body. I feel my vision fading as the life in me begins to leave my body behind. Staring at the full moon above me, it’s light fading the deeper I go, I wonder if this was my end. Was this it then? Was I about to die? Somehow that didn’t seem so bad. Maybe, if the moon goddess allows it, I can be rejoined with my father and mother, with Myron and the rest of my pack members. Wanting to go peacefully I couldn’t help the sudden rage that bursts inside of me at that moment. Why? Why do the undeserving get whatever they wanted? Why do they get to win? How could my uncle betray us like this and still get everything he ever wanted? Were we that bad of people to deserve a death like this? To be slaughtered and tortured by the hands of those rogues and that man? Why couldn’t we be the victors of this tragedy? The hate builds even higher as the thoughts kept coming. NO. I couldn’t let it end like this. It wasn’t fair. None of it was fair. My people didn’t deserve to die in this way. They were all good people. They lived with so much love and cared for one another. We all had each other’s backs when needed. Flashes of memories race through my mind of everyone I hold dear. Of all the pups that were so full of life and hope of the future. Gone. Without ever getting a chance to thrive in their young lives, to grow into wonderful beings, to meet their wolves, to find their mates and have a family to call their own. It wasn’t fair. I never got to meet her. I never got to meet my wolf, my other half. The hate just kept on building. I’ve never felt such a strong emotion rise up in me as the events of my mother’s death, finding my pack members in the state of despair and mangled bodies in pools of blood, of my best friend torn into shreds and finding my father in a heap of dead bodies, overthrew me. I vowed to get revenge for them. Even if I die here at this moment, I vowed with every last fiber of my being that I will avenge my people. I will take revenge on those who took that life from us all. I will sell my soul if I had too to destroy them. Every last one of them. They all deserved to live a life of pure hell and I will bring forth that painful existence to them. They will all die. I’ll make sure of it. And with that last dying thought, with the full moon fading to nothingness, my world finally goes dark for the last time. *** A slight gentle breeze hits my skin in a soothing caress. Opening my eyes, I am blinded by an earthly glow of sunlight. I gaze at the golden sway of grass that was soft against my skin. Slowly rising to a sitting position, I look all around me to find myself in a beautiful field of gold. There were trees spread around from each other, giving shade as their green leafy limbs swayed along with the breeze of the air. There was nothing for miles and miles in all directions. The clouds above were full of white fluff and gently rolled by at leisure. Was I dead? Was this my heaven? I thought I would be with my loved ones, together in harmony after death. But I was all alone. I sit there not knowing what to do or where to go. I keep looking around me until finally I spot a figure in the distance, sitting against a tree, looking for all the world at peace. Standing up I carefully walk to that figure. As I got closer I realized it was a young woman with dark flowing hair wearing a long white dress like tunic with her arms bare. She sat with a smile as she ran her hand gently against a soft looking, washed out grey wolf. At first I thought it was my mother’s wolf but looking closer I could tell it wasn’t her. This wolf looked more gentle, more confident, and more graceful. I immediately knew it was a female wolf. Her physic was leaner and feminine. She was beautiful. She had her head in the woman’s lap, her eyes closed as if completely in bliss of the woman’s touch. Suddenly the woman leans down and whispers something to the wolf, making me stop in my tracks. There was something about them both that made me feel so at ease, like I have known them my entire life, yet never seen either of them before. The wolf opens her eyes and lifts her head, staring in my direction. She rises from her sitting position and trots over to me carefully. The woman just watches her as she looks to us, still not saying a word to me. I wait until the wolf finally reaches me before kneeling at her level to gaze into her eyes. Funny, I had no fear of her at all. Sadness and grief were there in those beautiful bluish grey orbs of hers. I wasn’t sure why she was feeling so sad, but my heart twisted in pain only wanting to comfort her. I reach out my hand and watch as she immediately places her snout into my palm. A feeling of heartache, yet joy as well, waves into my body. Lifting my other hand, I graze the top of her head in a gentle caress and she shivers with pleasure. She then steps closer to me and rubs her head against my chest, nearly making me fall backwards. A bright smile overtakes my face as I cuddle into her and continue to stroke her soft fur. She sits on her hind legs and gazes up at me once more. Looking deep into her eyes I instantly knew that she was my wolf. Which meant the woman at the tree… Looking behind her I see the woman was now standing with a smile. She was breathtaking as she watches us with love and joy. Standing back up, my wolf then grazes my legs and stood next to me, facing the woman as well. “Are you Selene, the moon goddess?” My voice echoes softly. She just gives me a brighter smile. Lifting up a fisted hand she uncurls her fingers revealing her palm full of silver dust. She reaches it close to her lips and gently blows the dust that suddenly swirls in my direction. Not sure what she was doing, I close my eyes tightly and I instantly feel my body submerged in cool water. My breath hitches as I could no longer breathe that fresh air from a moment before. What was happening?! I quickly open my eyes to find a deep dark blue void surrounding me. I struggle with the water until I see the woman flowing down to me, her hair and dress like spread out like petals from a blossoming flower, the blue light behind her making her look like an angel of the sea. She smiles in the water as she reaches out her arms to me. Feeling the safety of her embrace I reach out to her, clasping her hands, and I suddenly feel the rush of being pulled up. I take a large gasp of air as soon as my head broke the surface of the water. Desperately looking around me I find the shore not too far from my left and swim in that direction. I didn’t take two steps before I hit the lake floor and pull myself out of the water. My body felt beat up and heavy as I lay there on the ground, breathing heavily as if I held my breath for far too long. Closing my eyes I let the sunlight warm my flesh as the warm breeze slightly made goosebumps on my skin. Snapping my eyes open I realized that I should be freezing, not feeling warmth. It was also night when I fell in, not daytime. Lifting my head, I look around the forest to find there was no snow anywhere near me. In fact, the grass was bright with greenery, the trees were covered in vibrant green leaves and the sun was bright in the sky, giving a warm atmosphere in the air. Flowers were blooming everywhere, and I could the birds chirping in the nearby distance. With difficulty I stand up, not understanding why it seemed to look like early spring instead the dead of winter. Remembering what had occurred on the cliff I quickly look up to see there was no one there. It was as if time itself had changed. Feeling too out in the open, I quickly limp into the woods to figure out what I needed to do next. I wince as my right leg throbbed in pain. Finding a decent boulder to sit on, I rest for a few moments to catch my breath. It wasn’t just my leg that hurt, but my left shoulder and my ribs felt bruised. Must have been from the impact of the water. It was a long way down and I was still baffled on how I survived that fall. I look down at my leg and stare. Blinking, I look at the clothes I was wearing. These were not my pajamas that I was dead certain I was wearing before I fell. I wore black jeans that had tears and holes in them. There were even shoes on my feet that I definitely knew I never owed before. They weren’t even my style. They were beat up and worn, even the sole was coming apart. I look down at the shirt I was wearing to find a baggy checkered overshirt that was way too big and had seen better days, along with a black tank top. What the hell was I wearing here? I suddenly hear rustling of bushes not far from my left. Standing up I stare in that direction with my heart in my throat. Not waiting to see what it was, I quickly get the hell out of there and head in the direction of my home. Will the rogues, my uncle and that man still be there? I wasn’t sure, but I needed to know and see for myself the state my home was now in. There had to be someone in my pack that survived this catastrophe…right? Trying my best to ignore my pain, I limp my way back up the large hill as silently as I possibly could go. But what I find once I get there was definitely something I was not expecting and threw me in a loop of confusion.
