I watch as blood splatters from his nose. He quickly covers it, looking quite shocked at my attack of him. The wolf inside me was seething with hatred. But that one contact was enough to show me all the awful, horrible things he had done to Hazel. The beatings, the insults thrown her way, the feeling of being unwanted and unloved by her father.
There was never a time that he showed an ounce of compassion or love for his child. She was brought into a world that was already tainted with abuse and pain. I watch as he stares at me with rage.
“You f*****g b***h! You broke my nose!” He groans in the pain as he sloppily tries to stand back up.
I watch him carefully as he faces me. I could tell immediately he was about to charge at me, but I was expecting him to do something as foolish. Just as he rushes me I grab the closest thing to me, the vase I seen before. Picking it up I slam the porcelain right across the side of his face, shattering it all over again. He slumps against the wall completely knocked out.
If that hit killed him then good riddance. One less nasty evil being the world needed. But my actions were half-hearted as I watch Hazel’s mother cry out and reach for her husband.
“W-What have you done?!” Her eyes bugged out in alarm and fear. Blood seeped down the side of her face from where the impact of the wall had slammed into her. I was appalled as she starts to cry and hug him to her.
I didn’t understand her actions. She should be relieved to be free of him. I sigh heavily knowing right away that I still had to live here for the time being. Maybe I was being too hasty. I wasn’t going to just let him beat her like that however. Never again will he lay hands on Hazel or her mother. I’ll make sure of it..
I also had to remember that this was Hazel’s life and disrupting it too much could cause me more trouble than good. So I had to be careful of what I do around the people that knew her well. Crouching down next to the woman I check for his pulse. He was still alive, but he needed to be checked in at the hospital. I then realize something that didn’t click in before.
Money.
These people were poor. So how were they going to be able to afford the costs of the medical bills once he was all patched up? My anger got the best of me. Sighing, I look to Hazel’s mother again, who looked so exhausted.
“I’m sorry. Can we…afford to take him to the hospital?” I ask hesitantly.
I feel like this is something Hazel should already know, but I wasn’t sure.
She gives me a blank stare at my question. She was more of a mess than when she first walked in. I was concerned for her head injury, but she didn’t seemed to mind it one bit. Her sole concern was for her husband.
I was a stranger in this new life and what right did I have to screw it all up so suddenly? I was sure I was acting out of character that was this Hazel girl. But I wasn’t going to let this man control me. That wasn’t how I was raised.
Sighing deeply, I kneel down on the other side of the guy. Together we take him to their bedroom and I practically throw his ass, none too gentle, on the bed. Hazel’s mother quickly leaves the room. Taking no regards of her injuries I didn’t know what to do from here. It wasn’t like I could just leave. I needed to make a plan of how to go about asking questions of my uncle without drawing suspicions that I’m not who everyone thinks I am.
I hear her voice speaking lowly so I go to check to see who she was talking too. She was on the house phone as she folded in on herself, wobbling a bit. I look back to the man on the bed to see he was still blissfully passed out.
“Dr. Horus will be here shortly. Perhaps it’s best you stay in your room. Once your father wakes up he isn’t going to be too happy.”
She wouldn’t look me in the eyes as she scurries back in her room and closes the door. Staring down at the broken pieces of the vase my shoulders slump. I quickly go back in that dissolute room and sit on the bed.
I hear yelling outside my window and check to see what the commotion was all about. I see two older men screaming in each other’s faces as onlookers stood by watching. Some of the younger kids paid no mind as they continued to do the hard labor that they were doing. Some of the women just shook their heads when the two men suddenly went into blows on one another.
My eyes widen as they slammed their fists and scuffled over each other while no one was doing a thing to stop it. Was this their norm? I never really witnessed a violent altercation before. Just as I think one of them was going to kill the other a young man steps in and quickly pulls them apart.
I stare at him as he definitely didn’t look like he belonged to this part of the pack. I wasn’t stupid, I knew all these people were lowly omegas, but this newcomer had a superior atmosphere about him that just screamed he was higher rank.
Not only did he wear decent, clean clothes and his hair was beautifully washed and styled, he had the mannerisms of a person who was raised around people who didn’t understand the meaning of hardships.
He was tall, standing to at least six feet, and he was very, very, good looking. I watch as he speaks to the two men. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but the men seemed to have calmed down, grudgingly shook hands and parted ways.
The women and children then swarmed him with happy smiles all while bombarding him with talk over one another. He didn’t seem like a snob as he just smiles back and tried to answer back.
It was strange as I stare at him, it was like this odd earthly glow surrounded him and I was confused by it. Shaking my head of the weird thoughts I quickly step back from the window. It was only a little after seven in the evening, but my body suddenly felt very tired. The fall from the cliff was finally taking its toll.
I quickly decide to start fresh with my planning and venturing out for the next day instead, and just got into suitable wear to sleep in. This girl didn’t seem to have sets of pajamas so I was left with just finding a t-shirt and a pair of worn out sweats.
Laying down in the uncomfortable bed I stare at the ceiling contemplating just how I was going to change this life into something better, at least until I can avenge my people that is.
My eyes began to droop, my head feeling heavy. Before I knew it, I was out like a lightbulb.
***
The wind felt heavenly as I laid there on the ground. Opening my eyes I see the bright blue sky as a few birds swayed together in the wind playfully. The sun was warm against my skin while the air smelled of fragrant flowers and a fresh alluring scent.
The scent was unfamiliar to me, yet also calming to my soul. It was a wonderful smell. A smell of fresh dew in the morning with something I couldn’t pinpoint. It was near damn intoxicating.
The scent was coming from my left so I turn my head just to be caught off guard and surprised to see a very handsome face facing back at me. His eyes were closed as if he was sleeping. We were laying side by side in a position where his body was in the other direction, like we were looking each other upside down. My left was to his left, our heads turned towards one another.
I couldn’t help but stare at his beauty. His black hair looked soft, fluffing up as the wind blew through it gently. His skin looked smooth with his eyelashes laying gently on his cheeks. He looked so peaceful as his breathing calmly raised his chest in the normal rhythm of sleep.
I stare down at his lips, that were slightly parted. They were full and plush as if they were meant to simply be kissed all the time. The sun’s rays caressed him gently with a sublime glow that made him so angelic.
Not helping myself, I carefully reach a hand out, wanting to feel that soft hair of his. Grazing my fingers in his beautiful strands.
I was so mesmerized that I didn’t realize that his breathing had changed. Then his eyes slowly opens, making my hand freeze in his hair, my breath hitches. His eyes were the most gorgeous eyes I had ever seen. They were bright with a gentleness and they shined like the clear blue waters of the ocean.
We stared for just a moment until he slowly smiles at me, giving off a set of straight white teeth. That smile instantly melted my heart as it starts to beat wildly in my chest. We don’t say a word as he continued to just stare. Hie eyes roam all over my features the same way I had done with him while he was sleeping.
He looked so peaceful as he looks at me. I didn’t know who he was, but there was some connection between us that was unmistakable. I wanted to discover that connection. He reaches up a hand and softly grazes my cheek.
An instant feeling of belonging overcame me. His finger softly rubs my cheek as his eyes glazes over like he was just as mesmerized by me as I was with him.
“Beautiful.” He whispers.
The sound of his voice was deep and smooth. I loved the sound of his voice that caused massive tingles to shoot through my body. Closing my eyes I let the sensations to consume me. When I open my eyes again I began to panic as he starts to fade away. I quickly sit up just as his body disappears into the wind.
*Alarm blaring*
I jerk up at the loud sound that was blaring through the room. I quickly scramble to shut it off as my body trembled in anxiety.
What the hell was that dream? Who was that boy? Why did I dream of him?
“Ugh.” My face scrunches up when the realization that he had been the same boy from the night before that stopped those men from beating each other to a pulp. Was his handsomeness that alluring that I let myself dream about him? What the hell was wrong with me? This was not the time to be besotted on some rich pansy just because he was gorgeous. I had mission to accomplish and he was definitely intruding with these unwanted thoughts.
Getting up, I quickly take a shower and get dressed for the day. I wanted to start out early to ask questions without seeming too suspicious. If I couldn’t get answers here in this part of the pack then I had a long walk ahead of me to get to the nicer part of town to do my research.
I didn’t bother to see about Hazel’s parents. I know I should probably care more, since I’m supposed to be playing the part as their daughter. But the thought of getting into their crazy mess rubbed me the wrong way. Plus, I actually didn’t have time for it.
I go to open the door when I hear, “Hazel.”
I slowly turn to Hazel’s mother, who stood just down the hall.
She gives me a gentle smile. “Don’t forget your backpack.”
I blink at her. What? Looking down I see the ugly looking bag that was in her hand. What the hell was I supposed to do with that? As if sensing my confusion she frowns.
“I know it will be hard to face them, but you can’t let this destroy you. Your education is very important and besides, this is your last year and it’s almost over. So, just keep your head down and go about your day, alright.”
I could hear the pleading in her tone. It never even occurred to me that I had to attend school. I was always homeschooled with Myron and a few others in the main house. So going to high school was never a thought.
Also, I was curious of this talk about something happening with Hazel. This was the third time that it was mentioned of something that caused Hazel to be hurt or broken in some way. What exactly happened that everyone kept telling me to be strong about it?
I take the bag from her and smile awkwardly. We both just stand there not saying a word, but neither of us moving. Looking towards her bedroom door I hesitantly ask,
“Is he…?”
I see her shoulders tense. “The doctor came by late last night. His nose is broken and he has two black eyes. He also has a concussion. He’s to stay in bed for the next two days. He’s under heavy medication right now.”
I swallow hard, knowing I just probably made her life a little harder. “Can you, I mean can we afford the treatment?”
“Don’t you worry about that. Just focus on school and getting yourself all better.”
With that she starts shoving me out of the house and shuts the door after me. I just stood there staring at that sad pathetic door. Clearing my throat I walk out of the broken gate and stand on the beat up sidewalk not sure where to go.
People were already up for the day doing chores and whatever else they do on a daily basis. The air was a bit chilly, but I was sure to warm up in no time walking. I start to walk in the direction that I had came from the day before. I hoped I didn’t get lost on the way since I really had no idea how to get to the school. Assuming that was the school I did attend that I saw yesterday.
My steps slow as the thought came to me that maybe there was a school just for omegas here in this pack? The place was sure big enough to have more than one, right? It wasn’t like I could just ask what high school I went too, that would had gave red flags for sure.
Maybe I could just wing it. I’ll show up and if that wasn’t the school I went too then I’ll just say I was thinking of transferring and staking out the place. Ugh, either way I was going to get weird looks from people.
“Hazel!”
I jerk at the sound of some guy’s voice. Turning around I see a scrawny, lanky, kid with bright red hair and freckles galore. Just like Hazel’s, his clothing was not in much better condition. Wheezing a bit, he stops next to me placing his hands on his knees trying to catch his breath.
I wait until he takes out an inhaler and places it in his mouth taking a deep slow breath. “Where have you been? Why didn’t you wait for me?”
I stare at him, wondering who he was to Hazel. He gives me a quizzical look that soon turns into one of sympathy and sadness.
“Hey, I’m sorry about what happened the other day. You know I’m always here for you right? No matter what we stick together.”
He takes my hand then and I’m slammed with more memories.
Once again I’m looking through Hazel’s vision as she runs down a hall that held lockers and mass of people as they crowded around what looked to be a fight that was going on. She shoves people out of her way as she cries out a boy’s name.
“Benji!”
She breaks through the crowd to reveal three guys, who looked like assholes to me, standing in front of the boy I was with now. Benji was on the ground against the lockers, tears streaming down his face. I could see he was angry, humiliated and embarrassed.
“Hey you f*****g fag, is it true you love d**k over p***y?” People around snicker as they watch the scene. The guy, standing in the center, smirks as he bends down the Benji’s level. Shoving his shoulder hard against the metal of the lockers his face changes into a scowl full of hatred.
“Come near my boy again and I’ll make sure to make your life here a living hell, you disgusting piece of shit.” He then takes his face in a hard grip, squishing his cheeks together drawing a wince and a whimper from Benji.
“Find someone else to go suck d**k on, you trash.” He pushes his head hard, causing it to slam against the metal, creating a small dent.
“Ew, Slater, go wash your hands, you touched him.” A girl, who was quite beautiful, states with a disgusted look on her face.
Hazel then came rushing forward to Benji, kneeling next to him. “Benji!” She cries out again, grabbing his arm tightly.
“Ugh, the other trash just arrived. Makes since you two would be friends.”
I could feel her body tense up, but she doesn’t look their way. The fear of them was evident as her heart pounded in her chest and the blood rushes faster in her body.
“Why do you guys always reek? It’s nauseating. I could literally see the stink fumes coming off on you.”
Slater covers his nose for emphasis. More snickering and laughter roamed around the halls.
“I doubt it would help, but…” One of the other guys, standing behind him, unscrews a soda bottle and pours it right on their heads.
They both just sat there as everyone gasped and laughed.
“Bro, that just made it worse. Now they’re just stinking and sticky” The other guy laughed.
The guy who poured the soda widen his eyes. “Oh, I didn’t think of that. I figured the strawberry scent would slightly make them smell better.”
“What the hell is going on here?!” A new voice rang out.
Someone was pushing their way through, on the other side of the crowd, as this Slater asshole quickly stands up, looking a bit worried.
“Oh, hey Sh…”
I didn’t get to hear the rest of what he said or see the person as the memory suddenly fades away.
“Hazel?”
I jerk a little as he gently squeezes my hand with a worried expression. My heart went out to him as he suddenly reminded me of Myron. Tears welled up unexpectedly. Blinking them back I give him a small smile.
“Sorry, I was just lost in thought for a moment.”
As if understanding, he nods his head. He doesn’t let go of my hand though and I wondered if this was something Hazel and him did often. But I was grateful he showed up when he did. Now I didn’t have to worry on where I needed to go or head in the wrong direction.
