CHAPTER 7: MIDNIGHT MYSTERIES

1657 Words
Rhyghyr's POV “Mr Lenox-Hill, you are immediately needed at the hospital.” I struggled to keep the frown off my face, but it still slipped in the middle of my eyebrows when I heard the speaker at the other end of the call. Call it super lycan hearing, but I had been hearing that phrase a lot. Usually at this time after dinner. “Stop frowning so much, you old grump. You will get wrinkles at this rate,” Zayn said with an air of his usual, carefree attitude and flicked off my forehead as he slipped by me to get his black coat. “That hurts, asshole. Every. Single. Time,” I gritted out while rubbing away the sting on my forehead and followed him to the door. His cheeky grin and bounce in his step made me question what he was up to at this hour. He had been suspiciously mysterious for the last two months. “Going to your mistress?” “Danger is my mistress,” he quipped. “Not the answer I was looking for, Beta Lenox-Hill.” “Then what were you looking for?” He asked as he snatched his wallet and keys off the long, royal table. “Where are you going?” I asked upfront, blocking his exit and crossing my arms in front of my chest. “None of your business,” Zayn frowned. “It is my business,” I coolly replied with narrowed eyes. “Who do you think is going to let you go at this hour?” I tilted my head questioningly. “The question is not who is going to let me,” Zayn stepped uncomfortably closer to me. He was hardly an inch or two shorter than me, so his sharp gaze met my cold one. “It’s who is going to stop me?” He challenged me. “Me.” “Right. I don’t have to tell you about my comings and goings. I thought we were no longer under curfew,” Zayn raised an eyebrow. This manipulative, lying son of a biscuit was evading again. Sixty days and I still didn’t know why he visited the hospital in that damn human city so often. He didn’t even put on his chick-attracting cologne. What was he doing in the city he hated so much if not going to the nightclubs to pick up women? Something seemed fishy. “Explain,” I growled. “The fort is under our control and we are free as birds. The enemies are dead or behind bars. You are well-settled at the helm of the throne and the people adore you to the point that they will willingly give up their lives for you. We have no imminent dangers except for a few unknown traitors. Stability reigns over our kingdom. So no curfew and no Alpha right to spy on us, nor am I on duty. I don’t see why you are so concerned about me going to the city,” Zayn replied as he pushed me out of his way and walked towards his car with two warriors. The same two who followed him every night. “Spoken like a true guilty man,” I graced him with slow claps. “I didn’t mean the explanation for ‘no curfew’, Zayn. I want to know why you have been going to the hospital after dark.” “Because it needs my help.” “Till morning?” “Yes.” “Every night?” “Yes.” “You are not a doctor. What do you do there? Paperwork?” “Yes.” “Now try again without clenching your teeth.” “I swear to god, I will punch you.” “I DARE YOU TO,” this time Titan thundered in his booming Alpha voice while my eyes glowed their bright golden. Zayn looked conflicted before disappointment washed over his face. His face fell and his eyes lowered. “I am sorry, I crossed a line, Alpha” the beta looked genuinely upset with himself. “I just … I am sorry,” he sighed, his head hanging in shame. Calming down myself, I softly asked, “What is wrong, Zayn? You never act like this. This is so out of character for you. If there is a problem, don’t try to take the whole burden. Allow me to help you. I am not asking as your Alpha. I am asking you as your friend.” Zayn looked at me and searched my eyes for something. “Oh shut up, stop getting emotional on me, Rihanna,” he burst out laughing and I somehow willed myself from smacking him on the head for using that infuriating nickname. ‘Cut off his balls. Then let’s see who Rihanna is,’ Titan suggested, and this time Zayn glared at me. As the two of them bickered at each other, I summoned the two warriors and asked them, “Where are you going?” “To Lenox Hill Hospital, Your Highness.” “Every night?” “Yes Sir.” “How long does it take to reach?” “One hour, Sir.” “So you take the highway?” “Yes Sir.” “If you are speaking the truth, then why are the tyres so muddy?” I asked, and the warriors’ faces paled immediately. Zayn, on the other hand, looked completely unfazed. I dismissed the warriors with a wave of a hand. “Well?” “We are going to the hospital,” he stood his ground. “So you don’t mind if I tag along?” I smirked. “Oh, look who’s nose is crawling back in my business,” Zayn mocked. “I am taking that you don’t mind. Let’s go together,” I coolly ignored his taunt. “Yes, I do mind,” Zayn gave me a straight answer for the first time. “Now I love being fashionably late but not so late that I piss off my doctors. Good Night, Sunshine. Don’t wait for me,” he blew me a kiss and my face immediately scrunched up. ‘Eww, Zayn!’ Titan shrieked as if he had caught the mumps. ‘Don’t you dare do anything illegal or else I will break your ass into a thousand parts!!” “Oh, kinky. Daddy likes,” Zayn waggled his eyebrows and my lycan showed off his knowledge of high level vocabulary to him. Sorry, high level vulgar vocabulary to him. That mutt seemed to have only learned cuss words when he was dispatched by the Moon Goddess. I had to train the unruly, manner-less lycan in all other relevant skills. He only had a natural talent for picking fights and cursing. Puppy Titan swore more than he fought on the training grounds during our childhood. Zayn heartily laughed his way to the sleek, black Mercedes and, with one hand, caught the keys thrown to him by one of his warriors. The two warriors nodded at him and I was sure that he had mindlinked them to keep an eye on me before he slammed the door shut and peeled out of the driveway. It was common knowledge to both of us that Beta Lenox-Hill was involved in something that I wouldn’t approve of. But what was it? Grabbing a few scent inhibitors from the medical wing, I trailed the Beta out of the royal grounds and towards the human city. I started having second thoughts when Zayn actually went to his hospital and was immediately surrounded by three doctors at the entrance. From the sounds of it, it did seem like an emergency. “Mr Lenox-Hill, someone is stealing medicines, especially from the OB-GYN wing. We have been trying to nab the thief for a month, but we have no progress.” “Did you check the security tapes? Any luck with the cameras?” Zayn asked. While the team of doctors apprised him of the chaotic situation, I felt like a shitty friend. I should have trusted him. He was actually helping his staff at the hospital. However, my eyes widened and nearly eclipsed my face when I saw Zayn’s trusted warrior sneak out of the back of the hospital with pills and food! Zayn quickly wrapped up his meeting and went strutting straight towards the thief! “Did you turn away the cameras so that she is not caught? She must be due for an ultrasound too. I asked the pack doctor about it. He has started getting suspicious. He thinks I need tips because I got someone pregnant,” Zayn huffed. I would have laughed out loud if it were not for the alarm bells ringing in my head.
