Later that afternoon, Everly, with Whitney’s help, put together a huge hot chocolate bar for Maddox and the other kids. There were marshmallows, chocolate bars, sprinkles, whipped cream, candy canes, and all sorts of other fun options so the kids could make their own sugary concoctions. Whitney took the opportunity to get to know Everly better, but didn’t make much progress. Every time Whitney asked a specific personal question, Everly skillfully evaded and didn’t answer directly. “A little too skillfully,” Whitney thought which made her more curious about Everly’s background. Whitney didn’t feel threatened. She and Declan had been tight their whole lives, and she knew whatever Declan’s interest, he would never allow a threat to the pack.
