After the interview, I got back to his pack in record time, and was delighted that Serena was waiting in my office.
As I shut the door and before I could get a word out Serena said "You've found your mate, and she's human."
"How did you know?!"
Serena smiled "Xavier, given my history with this pack, do you really need to ask that question? But I assume you have more pressing questions about marking and mating a human."
"I do. Will she feel the effects of the bond?”
Serena laughed, “Xavier, do you doubt your ability to seduce a woman without the effects of the bond?”
I grimaced a little. Women tended to throw themselves at me because of my Alpha status or because they saw me as wealthy businessman. Certainly, I’ve had fun with a few she wolves over the years, but I hadn’t been serious with anyone, and was always clear that I was not interested in any sort of relationship. At one point, last year, I did seriously consider a chosen mate because I was tired of waiting for my fated mate and carrying the burden of the pack without a Luna, but I’m so glad I waited. Nothing replaces this feeling.
“I, uh, I was just curious.”
“My boy, some things will be a surprise for even you. Just know, like with any mated pair, loving and being loved is up to the two of you to find and nurture. The bond only jump starts that process.”
“Can I mark her without turning her?"
"I will need to meet her to determine fully, but there is an ancient legend that says some humans have deep magic in their veins that allows them to be fully mated and marked to a pureblood werewolf without the risk of changing. The possibility exists, but it is exceedingly rare. You must consider that you will have to change her to mark her or leave her unmarked and just live as mates." I was a bit dismayed at this and Drake was pissed and started pacing in my head.
"What about pups?"
"Providing she's a healthy human, she can carry your pups but the pregnancy is likely to be high risk. Conception, however, won't be a problem.," she looked at me and winked. I blushed a little. Serena was kind of like a fun Aunt, but this who conversation was a little awkward.
"What if she rejects me when she finds out about me?"
Serena patted me on the cheek like she used to when I was a boy. "The moon goddess doesn't make mistakes. As your mate, she will have the ability to understand and love all the parts of you. Be patient with her, Xavier. She's going to be dealing with a great deal. But also enjoy this. I know you've been lonely and despairing that you would ever find her. You've found her, now don't mess it up!” With that she turned and walked out of my office.
I leaned back in my chair pondering what Serena just told me. I had an overwhelming urge to head right back to the city and seek out Aria. I just wanted to be near her and feel her presence. Waiting until tomorrow felt like an eternity. I decided we had to spend the entire day together. But tonight was going to be a long night as I waited for 9 am tomorrow.
In the meantime, I mind-linked Wade and Carson to come to his office. They walked in a few minutes later.
"Dude, what is going on? Are you ok? Why did you need Serena?" Wade asked.
“I’m good. Great, actually. I met my mate today.”
“That’s awesome. Man. I’m pumped. So happy for you.” Carson replied. “Where is she? Why are you here?”
“But it doesn’t answer why you needed Serena?” Wade was always the cautious one. As the beta, he was meticulous and had great attention to detail. It was hard to get anything past him. Not only was he a great beta, he was my brother-in-law, and his mate Jessica, my younger sister Jessica, were expecting their first pup.
“She’s human” I replied.
Carson and Wade both slumped against the couch in my office with that news. Carson started to say something, but stopped as he looked up at the ceiling.
“It’s not completely new for us. Wasn’t your aunt or grandma a human?” Wade asked.
“Half, I think,” I replied. “She couldn’t shift, but had heightened senses and strength, if I remember correctly. We’re going to have to check the pack genealogy, but I don’t think there’s been a fully female Luna for at least four, maybe five generations. But man, she is perfect.”
Wade looked at me with a smile, “Yeah. Man. I bet she totally is. When are you seeing her next?”
“Tomorrow morning. I’m showing her around town and some of the real estate options.”
“Cool. Let us check the pack records for you and do some research. I can take your afternoon meetings and will follow-up with the lab and see if there’s any new information about the pup’s death,” replied Carson.
“Thanks guys. Also, will you touch base with the hospital. Let’s sweeten the job offer she will be getting. We can use some of the foundation money to supply a grant or improve her salary. I don’t want to give her any excuse to turn the job down. Only link me if it’s an emergency. Anything else?”
The guys looked at each other with a grin and then back at me. “When do we get to meet our new Luna?”
