Idona walked to the mirror to look at her reflection. Her mother’s gown was certainly different from the cotton dresses she wore every day and which she had outgrown. It had not been very expensive, but it had a style that expressed her mother’s good taste in clothes as well as in everything else. It was white with a soft frill round the neck and the waist was fashionably high. The long sleeves had frills at the wrists and the skirt was straight, except for a frill round the hem, which made Idona look very slim and elegant. It also, although she did not realise it, made her look very ethereal and like one of the nymphs when she was a child that she used to think she could see in the mist that hung over the lake in the early morning.
