1. Chapter One
Allegra's POV
"Allegra, be a dear and make me another cup of coffee, will you?", my boss, more like a person who I see as a father figure asks me and I scowl at him in disdain.
"This is your fifth cup today. Its not good for your health, sir", I chide him and he sighs before running a hand through his hair.
"Sweetheart, how many times do I have to tell you to not call me sir? You are more than just my secretory and you know it", he fake glowers at me and I smile.
"I like to keep it professional while I am here, you know that. I don't want people to think that I am taking advantage of you being so nice to me".
"Fine. Have it your way then, but please get me a cup of coffee?", he gives the kicked puppy look which he knows I cannot resist.
"You old man, what am I going to do with you?", he fake gasps and puts a hand on his heart in mock hurt.
"Old? Have you seen me, sweetheart?", he pouts and I giggle before shaking my head.
"This is the last cup of your coffee for the day", I leave my desk to go the kitchen to get the coffee for my boss.
I have been working at the Anderson Industries for the past eight years and it has been nothing but bliss. My boss, Derek Anderson, came to a cafe that is nearly a block away from here. He was a regular customer and took a liking for me. We used to talk in the cafe because of him being an influential person, the owner would give me some time off when Derek asked him to. After a few months, he asked me about the scars that marred my skin and I trusted him enough by then and told him about everything that had happened to me. He held me while I cried my heart out but he never once judged me. He told me everything will be fine and offered me a job at his pharmaceutical company as his personal secretory and I accepted it, without a second thought. Call me naive if you want, but he was the first person to really care for me and it was obvious from the way he talked to me, like I was his own daughter. Now, eight years later, I don't regret a thing. I am 28, with a stable income, a house that I can call my own, I have enough bank balance to live comfortably in the city like New York.
I make the coffee for him and knock on his door, and he yells for me to come in.
"You are my life savior, sweetheart. Thank you", he smiles gratefully and I nod at him but before I could leave, he stops me.
"Allegra, I forgot to tell you, I am going to be retiring now and Aiden will be taking over as the position of CEO and his friend, Xavier, will be the COO. There will be some changes made but for you, everything will be the same except for the person sitting in this chair", he says and my smile drops.
"You are retiring?"
"Yes. Look at me sweetheart, I am tired and old now, even though I don't look like that", he chuckles but my expression remains the same and he stands up and wraps a hand around my shoulders and makes me sit on the couch, taking a seat beside me.
"I have spent my life in the company and now, its time, I give some time to my wife too or she will murder me", he says and I chuckle at his statement.
"I understand. But you will be visiting right?", I ask, hopeful about his next words and he chuckles again.
"Of course, sweetheart. I am not going to let my son ruin my hard work though I know he won't and more so, I will miss you, so yes, I will visit as often as I can", he smiles at me and pecks my forehead. As I said, he is the father figure in my life and the respect I have for him is something that can never decrease.
"So, when will Mr. Aiden take over?"
"In a week", my heart stops for a second. I have met that arrogant man twice and I hated him. His behavior and attitude really needs some fixing and the way he talks to people is just outrageous, not that I will ever say this to Derek's or his face.
"Sweet. you want me to plan a party or something for your retirement?"
"We will be having one at our house, my wife planned and it and here is the invitation", he takes out an envelope from his jacket and hands it to me.
"This Sunday?"
"Yes. You have to be there by 7. okay?"
"Okay. I will get back to work now. I will be outside if you need me", he smiles and I get up before leaving the room but shoot him a smile before closing the door behind me.
I sit on my desk and resume working, but my minds continues drifting to his son who will be taking over soon. Will he think I am incompatible and fire me from the job? Will I be able to work with a person having that kind of temper and attitude? Will I be able to adjust to the new environment here? These questions will be answered next week when he officially becomes the CEO.
I continue working for the next few hours and I didn't even notice when the the office hours were over.
"Hey, you done yet?", Tanya, a receptionist here at the company and my friend asks me as she approaches my table.
"Not yet. Just a few more emails to answer. You can go ahead", we both live in the same building just on different floors.
"Sure? I can wait for you".
"No don't. I have to pick up my clothes from the laundry on the way home anyway".
"Okay then. See you at home. We are having a movie night, you remember right?"
"Of course. I have the popcorn and all".
"Okay great. See ya", she leaves and gets into the elevator and waves at me as the doors close and I wave back.
"You still here, sweetheart?", Derek comes out of his office, locking it behind him.
"Yeah. Just a few more things to take care of and then I will leave", he shakes his head at my answer.
"You work too much".
"You pay me money for doing just that".
"But its way past your time".
"But I am not done with the work yet, which you pay me for", he chuckles and I smile at him, knowing that I won. Before he could say something, the elevator dings and the man himself steps out, all the while looking down in his phone.
"Son? What are you doing here?", Derek asks and that's when he lifts his head, looking at his father and then his eyes avert to mine, holding mine captive. His beautiful green eyes, same as his father, but his are a bit brighter. He stares at me, with no emotion in them and then looks at his father.
"Its important", he states and Derek sighs before opening his cabin again.
"Sweetheart, you can leave whenever you are done".
"Do you need me to bring you both something?".
"No, its fine".
"Black coffee for me", Mr. Aiden replies rudely and his father sighs once again before looking at me and I nod. Once they turn around and enter the room, I scowl at the arrogant asshole. He doesn't know the word 'please' or just doesn't like to use it. I already don't like him and he is taking over the company, just what I needed in my life. Awesome.
I prepare a black coffee for him, and keep two packets of sugar on the plate but I doubt he would use them. I knock on the door, and Derek asks me to come in.
"Your coffee, Mr. Anderson".
"I can see that", he grunts and Derek scowls at him.
"Don't be so rude to the girl, Aiden".
"Whatever. Leave now", he says rudely, while looking me in the eye and I almost told him off but hold my tongue. He is the son of my boss and soon to be my boss, so I need to watch what say. I can't have him fire me and looking at his temper, he just might, if I even say something that doesn't sit well with him.
"I am done with all the work, so can I leave?", I ask Derek and Aiden is standing in front of, pissed off.
"Didn't I just tell you to leave?", he growls at me and I raise an eyebrow at him, not liking his tone. I am holding back when I didn't even do anything wrong.
"With all due respect, Mr. Anderson, your father is still my boss and I answer to him. You are not the boss of me yet so please refrain from using that tone with me when I didn't do anything wrong", I say all of this in one breath and with a blank face. Who does he think he is? Some sort of king that rules the world and expects everyone to bow to him and rub their noses at his feet? Well, when it comes to me, he has another thing coming. I am not the one to comply to people who don't earn my respect and this man sure as hell hasn't.
"How f*****g dare you talk to me like that?", before I could retort, Derek clears his throat loudly and comes to stand between us, his hands folded on his chest.
"Break it up, you both. Aiden, you will treat her with respect as she will be working as your PA once you take over, got it? And as of now, I am the boss, so you will listen to me, yes? So when I say, cool it, you will do it without another word", he glares at both of us and close my eyes, calming down. I reopen them and look at Aiden before sighing. Derek can be intimidating as hell when he wants to scare the person in front of him.
"I am sorry, Mr. Anderson. It was out of line for me to talk to you like that. I really am sorry", I apologize sincerely. I was wrong to say those things to him. Even though I don't really like him, it doesn't give me a right to say that to him.
"I am going to have fun working with you, Miss. Tyson", he says and I am surprised that he knows my surname but Derek probably gave everyone's files to him.
"I look forward to it, too", with that I nod at both of them before leaving the cabin and picking up my things. I leave the company and I huff out a breath.
"How the hell am I going to work with hi without saying something that will get me fired?", I wonder and make my way to the laundry to pick up my clothes, still thinking about the green eyed man and his arrogant ways.
