Chapter 10 The church was empty as I was carried through, the double doors closed. The guard set me on the ground beside the door while he went to push one half open. I got to my feet, muscles tensing as I prepared to make a run for it. But he stood with his arms wide, blocking the doorway as he advanced on me. I dodged left and then sprang to the right, but he grabbed hold of me by the hair and pulled me back. Scalp on fire from the pressure, I shrieked and clawed out at him, desperate for him to let go. He did release my hair, only to deliver a second blow to my jaw. I staggered backward, in danger of falling to the timber floor of the church.
