Chapter 6, Rachel:Traveling through the wilds of Shakopee was never fun or safe. Too many animals worked their way down from the mountain passes, looking for an easy meal. The same could be said about the human beasts that preyed on those running from the effects of the war. Rachel grew up on this shard and believed the stories of monsters coming down from the mountains to be nothing but myth and nonsense.
Men lived deep in the mountains, far away from the watery cracks, but they were not monsters. Her late husband traded with them, and her father did as well, long before she was born. Terrifying monster tales were how the mountain men kept the greedy flatlanders away from their homes. There were even rumors of large villages hidden in the deep valleys away from prying eyes.
