Chapter 2

Fraya I make my way to our room and head to the bathroom. Everyone will be here in a few hours for the twins third birthday and there is still a lot to be done. I turn on the hot water and then start undressing, but Alexander walks into the room and places his hands on mine, stopping me. I move my hands and allow him to remove my nightgown and then my underwear before he starts removing his own clothes. He steps into the shower and then holds a hand out for me. We don’t say a word as he grabs the shampoo, squirting some of the liquid onto his palm before applying it to my hair. I close my eyes as he massages my scalp and then pulls the soap through the rest of my hair. “I am afraid. I am afraid that if your dreams are true, it will mean that I might lose you. I am afraid that I won’t be enough to stop the Fae from hurting you or our children. So I live in denial, because I am afraid that we have just been living on borrowed time and that someday I will have to face this world without you again.” He says and the pain in his voice breaks my heart. “The only thing we can do is prepare Alexander. We need to be ready for the day they come because I don’t want to face a world without you or our children in it.” I tell him. “You need to train with the power we share. You are not just the keeper of the power we share, you are supposed to use it, but you haven’t even started training with the power and our power is our best defense against the Fae. Promise me you will start training.” He takes a deep breath, but nods and I feel a bit of the fear leave my body. “We are in this together, remember that.” “Yeah, I know baby.” He says and then kisses me before tilting my head back and under the water to wash off the soap. We wash each other, our touches turning from a caress to need. After all the soap is rinsed off, he picks me up and presses his mouth back on mine. He carries me to the bed, both of us still soaked, but not caring as he fills me, his body moving against mine. “I love you Fraya, always.” He says before moving faster, his hand sliding down my body to that little bundle of nerves. He rubs small circles around my clit as he moves faster and within seconds I am throwing my head back screaming out my release, Alexander following me soon after. “I love you Alexander.” I whisper in his ear when I catch my breath. He gives me a soft kiss before he pulls out of me and then moves back to the bathroom to get two towels. We dry ourselves and then get dressed. I head to Evangeline’s room and Alexander to Marvin’s as we do every morning. Evangeline is already up and busy brushing her teeth, bouncing up and down with excitement. “Mommy, I am three today!” She screams in her little voice, a smile stretching over her face while toothpaste goes flying everywhere. “Is aunty Eleanor coming to visit today?” She asks before she bends down to rinse the toothpaste out of her mouth. Eleanor Somers, or now Eleanor Bright as she is mated to Owen Bright, Alexander’s second in command and also his best friend, is the only person I still see frequently for my pack, my old kingdom. She lives walking distance from the palace, in her big mansion with her husband and daughter, their second on the way. I am grateful for the fact that she has stayed close to me because I don’t know what I would’ve done without my best friend to talk to whenever Alexander drives me up the roof every now and again and I am always there to listen to her whenever her husband drives her over the edge. She still designs and makes all my dresses and everyone else in this household. People come from far from her dresses and all other kinds of clothing, making it possible for her to generate her own income and not relying on Owen to support her. She loves her husband, but she doesn’t see him as her free ticket to wealth. I have always been proud of her independence and her strong backbone. “Yes, Eleanor will be here. She should be here any minute now with your new dress for the party.” I love how her eyes light up with the news of a new dress. Eleanor had promised her a beautiful pink dress, but told her that it would be kept a surprise until the morning of the party. Before I can say anything else, the door opens, revealing Eleanor as if she had been called. “Happy birthday little princess!” She says, throwing the dress that she had in her hands at me before scooping up Evangeline and spinning her around in circles around the room. My daughter’s laughter fills the room and the sound soothes the tightness in my chest. Today is about my children, so for today, I will not worry about Fae or the future. I place the dress on the bed and join in the uncontained laughter and the knowledge that today, I am free and I am going to enjoy every moment of it. For the next hour, I help my friend to dress my bubbling daughter that won’t stand still long enough for us to even get the dress over her head. She seems to find it hilarious that we are running after her, one trying to catch her while the other holds the dress ready, trying to trap her into a corner. When we finally get her in her pretty pink dress, she makes it a sport to run away again as we chase her with hairpins and the brush. By the time Alexander walks into the room to tell us that the guests have started arriving, Eleanor and I are lying on the bed, pretending to be heavily out of breath while Evangeline’s hair is still standing in every direction. “Mommy! Hurry, I can’t go out looking like this.” She says with her eyes big as she quickly sits at the vanity table in the corner of the room, making it look like she is the one that has been trying to get ready for the past hour instead of running around. Alexander simply shakes his head with a little laugh and then backs out of the room to attend to our guests. Ten minutes later, I am making my way to the gardens where we will be having the birthday party. As soon as I step out into the cold, I call fire to my blood to warm me. The snow is falling hard and fast, but it has never bothered the dragon shifters much as they have had their entire lives to get used to it, but for the wolf shifter, even with our thick skin, the cold seems to soak into our bones. Thank the gods for the magic flowing through me, or I might not have survived three years in this land of ice and wind. I look around the people that have already arrived, looking for one person in particular. It takes a while for me to spot his blonde hair and tall muscular body, but the second I do, I shot from the stairs, not caring that he hasn’t turned around and that I might tackle him to the ground in front of everyone, but just as I reach him, he turns around, a smile already stretching over that beautiful face of his. He opens his arms and I throw myself at him, wrapping my arms tightly around his neck as I hug him tightly to me. “You came.” I say as I feel a tear slip from my eyes. “As if I would miss this day for anything in the world.” Isaac says, hugging me even tighter. Gods, how I have missed him. I see Isaac rarely since he has taken over my position and is now King of the werewolves. It took him a long time to win over some of the packs and gain their respect as shifters live extremely long lives, they tend to be old school and some don’t adjust as easily as others. Some of the packs didn’t believe he was fit to rule, judged only due to his preference in s****l partners. Because of this, he constantly needs to prove himself, constantly needs to remind them that he isn’t king because he is weak and easy to control, making it hard for him to travel here often. I get to see him three time a year, one my children’s birthdays, mine and his. He only travels here for the children, but on the other two day, I am the one that travels to him. I would’ve loved to visit him more often as I miss my home and would also love for my children to be able to see it more often, but that would only make it harder on Isaac. Some of the wolves weren’t very accepting of the fact that I am now queen of the dragons, a race that was their greatest enemy at a time and aren’t very accepting of our friendship, regardless of everything I had done for them. “How are things back home?” I ask him, hoping things are at least a bit easier for him by now. “Still the same, but it will take time, we knew it would.” He says with a sad smile and I hate to see the dark circles under his eyes. I wish there was something I could do, but aside from walking away from my mate and going back home for good, nothing less will satisfy the packs and I refuse to simply walk away from my mate again.
