"Ugh..." Zoey groaned in pain.
The sudden, intense agony shot through her body like electricity, almost making her forget how to breathe.
Her vision blurred as if shrouded by a thick fog, everything around her losing focus and becoming indistinct.
Tears of pain involuntarily spilled from her eyes, trailing down her cheeks.
"You ungrateful brat, I raised you for nothing!" Robert choked her, completely losing his sanity. "I'm asking you one last time. Will you give me the money or not?!"
Just then, a loud bang shattered the silence in the room. The door was kicked open with force.
Owen's towering figure appeared at the doorway, his eyes filled with shock, like a guardian angel descending from the heavens.
In the blink of an eye, Owen demonstrated the superior speed and strength of an Alpha. He reached Zoey's side and kicked Robert away hard.
Robert flew across the room like a broken kite, crashing to the ground with a pained scream.
"W-Who are you?" Robert trembled as he struggled to rise, leaning against the wall like a discarded bag of trash, his face filled with fear as he stared at Owen.
Owen's gaze was icy. "You don't need to know who I am, but you hurt someone you shouldn't have. I'll make sure you pay for that."
Robert suddenly realized who Owen might be, his eyes flashing with greedy cunning as he quickly put on a flattering grin. "You... you're the Alpha who bought her? Give me money, and I'll sell my daughter to you. I promise I won't bother you two!"
Disgusted, Owen grabbed Robert by the collar and shoved him towards the window. "Say that again. I dare you."
"No... I said nothing..." Half of Robert's body dangling out of the window. The wind whistled past his ears, making him so frightened that he could only shake his head. His voice trembled with fear, and he didn't dare to resist.
Owen looked at Robert with disdain and then turned to help Zoey up. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine." Zoey's voice was faint, as if a breeze could carry her words away. She shook her head, trying to muster a smile.
Owen frowned, looking at her.
Although this girl had a face and scent that were familiar to him, the defiance and resilience sparkling in her eyes were alien to him.
Not only had she been sold at an underground auction, but she also carried such a tragic backstory.
If it weren't for his acute hearing, which picked up her screams after driving away, she might have been beaten to death by now.
"Let's go. I'll take you to the hospital," Owen said. Since she hadn't completed her werewolf shift, she didn't have the rapid healing abilities of other werewolves. So, she needed medical attention to treat her wounds.
Zoey shook her head again. "No need. Don't you have things to do? I don't want to waste your time."
Owen ignored her refusal, assertively pulling her by the wrist and leading her out of the room, as if it were his duty to do so.
Zoey followed Owen, her eyes on his broad shoulders and muscular arms.
A strange new sensation spread within her, something that she had never experienced.
Perhaps it was because, in the past, whenever her father beat her, Zoey had to endure the pain alone and then tend to her wounds by herself. But this time, someone had protected her with a firm yet gentle approach.
After getting her wounds treated at the hospital, Zoey spent the next few days recuperating at Owen's mansion.
One afternoon, she sat quietly by the window, playing with a paintbrush, looking out at the backyard garden.
The garden was filled with lilies of the valley in white, blue, and purple, their soft glow adding a dreamy quality to the scene.
The flowers hung heavily on delicate stems, like rare gems bestowed by nature.
"These lilies of the valley are so beautiful," Zoey murmured to herself, surprised by Owen's fondness for the flower.
The vast backyard was devoted solely to lilies of the valley, sparking her curiosity about the connection between them and the carved door she had noticed earlier.
As she was lost in thought, a neatly dressed man approached her with a firm step and a sharp gaze.
He introduced himself as Owen's Beta and right-hand man, and his name was Robin.
"Ms. Zoey, there is a grand ball tonight, and the Alpha would like you to accompany him," he said. Pulling out an unlimited black card from his pocket. Then, he handed it to Zoey and said, "The Alpha prepared it for you. You can buy whatever you like at the mall."
Zoey hesitated but ultimately accepted the black card.
Although she didn't fully understand her relationship with Owen, she saw no reason to refuse such a minor request.
Robin gave her a slight smile. "I'll arrange for a driver to take you to the mall."
Zoey nodded and watched him leave.
She thought that shopping before the ball would be a simple affair.
However, she could never have anticipated that this outing would lead to something unexpectedly troublesome.
As she entered the mall, dazzled by the luxurious outfits she had only seen in movies before, a loud and familiar voice sneered from behind her. "Well, well, who do we have here? Isn't this the dimwit who can't even shift?"
