The cruise liner that at its launch had been hailed as an engineering masterpiece had been in dry dock for nearly eight months. It had become a hulk of rusting steel and lost dreams after its previous life as a hospital ship to rejuvenate the aged. It was a big vessel, over 300 metres long, in excess of 150,000 tonnes and built to accommodate over five hundred passengers. Its previous owner, Stig Oleson, had died after being convicted of a string of felonies, and the ownership had passed to his daughter, Lorna.
