-Harper-
I stood frozen, gaping at the most attractive man I had ever seen, watching me with his lustful eyes. All the memories of those two times I surrendered to his charm re-emerged in my head, remembering what kind of business I had with him. I stepped away and shook my head, calling myself to order.
"What are you doing here? Who let you into the building?" I asked, gazing over his shoulder, hoping to see someone with him. Yet, he was alone.
This wasn't how I imagined the day would end. I never even dreamed he would be standing at my door. Tall, athletic, charming, and deadly exciting, Carter Remington. How on earth did he end up here?
"What are you doing here?" I repeated as I took a deep breath to stay professional.
"I don't know if you know how doors work, but if you don't, I'll enlighten you." He joked, closing the door behind him and showing me its mechanism. "See?" He closed it and smiled. "It's the same way downstairs. And about who let me in, I let myself in." He walked to my desk, looked disdainfully at the bouquet of sunflowers, and quickly turned to me.
"I waited for over an hour, ensuring no one saw me. See how much you mean to me?" He confessed and looked at me, sending shivers down my spine, and my body burned again. I will do a lot for my woman," he said, holding a bouquet.
"Happy birthday, baby. I hope you don't have plans for the evening because I'm kidnapping you." He came over and gave me flowers.
"Kidnap, you say?" I raised an eyebrow cockily, "What if I don't let you touch me? What if I start screaming and thrashing?" I lifted my chin and accepted the bouquet from him.
They smelled unique, exotic, refreshing, and delicate. I inhaled their scent and let out a slightly audible moan.
"Oh, believe me. You will scream and trash, but not here. Not now. This pleasure awaits us only after dinner." Carter bragged with his deep voice, which worked like an aphrodisiac on me.
I glanced at him, and immediately, my throat went dry, my heart sped up, and my blood boiled in my veins.
Here stood the s*x god before me, a guy for whom the word NO was a challenge and YES was permission to move to a higher level. My skin tingled again, and even though he hadn't touched me yet, I could feel his lips on my body.
"Carter, we can't." Suddenly, I came to my senses, but he was already holding me.
"We shouldn't." I shook my head and stuck my nose into the flowers, "I don't want to be the other one." I admitted it, although I don't know if he heard me.
"Then stay my one and only." He pleaded and grazed my face gently.
His eyes sparkled when he looked at me, not with lust or humor. He spoke seriously. I know he said it because I've heard it before, but I couldn't agree, no matter how often or thoughtfully he presented it. I couldn't agree, not like this. I shook my head slightly, but Carter didn't give up.
"Dinner, conversation, maybe holding hands, some gentle grazing and kissing. At least allow yourself that much, Harper. Let me spend this evening with you, and maybe, in the end, you'll agree to what I have to offer." He explained, gently caressing my cheek.
It was surreal. A guy I would do anything for stood before me on my birthday and asked me for a chance, and I was about to turn him down. What's wrong with me? Oh, I know. HE IS MARRIED!!
"You have a wife." I finally choked out, slumping my shoulders and burying my nose into the bouquet. Carter sighed slightly and confirmed.
"Yes. I have. I am in a contractual relationship with a woman who has agreed to a mutually beneficial business. Nothing that connects us is either serious or real. It's pure business that will end soon. So give me a chance to introduce to the woman I'm crazy about with an offer that might interest her." He asked, and I felt my head, although heavy with a million negative thoughts, nod to him.
"I don't want anyone to see us." I reminded him of my greatest fear, and this time, he agreed.
"So, you'll take your car, go home, put away the flowers, and freshen up." Carter stepped aside, grabbed my purse, and asked me out of my office, "Then you will go down to the underground parking lot, where I will be waiting for you. You will get in the back and relax with a bottle of champagne." He continued while escorting me and turning off all the lights after us. "And then you'll let me take you out for a nice dinner and listen to what I tell you, okay?" He asked as I stood by the elevator, shocked, looking around.
"Nod, at least, baby. I need to know you understand." He flicked my nose, laughing.
I shook off the shock and smacked his hand just as the elevator reached my floor, and my heart jumped as the doors opened. Luckily, no one was inside, so I quickly jumped in, expecting Carter to follow me. However, he was standing in the same place, hands in his pockets and a mischievous smile on his too-handsome face.
"I'll give you an hour, birthday girl." He winked and stared at me until the door closed.
My heart was pounding like crazy, and butterflies fluttered in my stomach. I finally exhaled and was a safe distance from this devil.
"You have to press the button, or it won't go." I heard muffled laughter from behind the door and blushed as I looked at the panel, realizing that I hadn't pressed any buttons. I quickly came to my senses and pressed the button several times, closing my eyes as the elevator moved down.
"Oh my God, what have I gotten myself into?" I raised my eyes upwards, staring at the spotlights on the ceiling.
"Easy Harper." I pep-talked myself by following the steps of the meditation process I read about last week. "It's just dinner. A regular birthday dinner." I told myself, although I knew this evening would not be ordinary.
After all, nothing about Carter Remington usually is. Let's take him alone. He is one of the youngest CEOs of a multi-million-dollar empire, a great athlete, philanthropist, and friend of three similar greats, not to mention his popularity, recognition, and killer appearance.
I looked down at the bouquet and smiled, remembering how my interest in him had started. A little over seven years ago, when I opened my company, Harper's Miracles, I celebrated my success with my best friend, Victoria, at one of the renowned clubs. Even though there was no VIP box, we did have a bucket of the best champagne, and we had a great time dancing and drinking cocktails.
We aroused the interest of a few pushy guys, but thanks to my friend's wedding ring and my big mouth, we managed to stay away from them. Unfortunately, one of them didn't give up and even managed to pin me to the wall. I was about to show him what my older brothers had taught me when he appeared tall, muscular, and with a mouth as bad as mine.
"Honey, is this d**k forcing himself on you? Because if he is, I'll be happy to break not only his filthy hands but also his ugly face. We can cut off his little d**k later for a grand finale." Carter appeared next to us, leaned against the wall, and with his penetrating gaze fixed on the insistent, drunk asshole, who immediately let go of me and left.
I remember it like it was yesterday because instead of the expected Thank you, he received: f**k you, I can handle it just fine on my own. Asshole. And with that nickname, I left him, pissed as a wasp. My entire evening was spoiled by a man with the most handsome face I had ever seen, and for the next few months, he haunted my dreams, stimulating my body and mind.
I didn't expect to meet him several more times later, and he evoked my most extreme emotions each time. I wanted to kill him or f**k him, but I did neither. Until. Until I made my first grave mistake and not only organized the devil's wedding but also allowed myself to be seduced before he said, ‚I do‘ to another. And although it was a night to forget, I don't regret it. I got what I wanted, but unfortunately, I whetted my appetite for more and no one. No one could satisfy me like he did. This guy destroyed me for others.
I shook my head as the elevator dinged, opening the doors to the lobby of our building, and taking a deep breath, I held my head high, holding the bouquet and my purse in front of me, strutting toward the exit.
"Have a nice evening, Miss Pierson." Our evening security guard, Kenneth, said goodbye to me over the monitors.
I said goodbye, smiled, and walked briskly toward my Volvo. My heart pounded as I looked around the parking lot, wondering if Carter had already left or if he was watching me somewhere nearby.
I opened the passenger door and placed my purse and flowers on the seat, but not before taking in their delicious scent again and sighing and laughing.
"God, what has gotten into me? I'm not fifteen years old to behave like this anymore." I scolded myself and, blushing as a beet, I walked around the car and got behind the wheel.
I glanced in the side mirror and was shocked to see a black sports Audi with tinted windows parked a few cars behind me. The engine was running, and the driver looked at me carefully, looking over his sunglasses. I started the engine and smiled, knowing perfectly well who stood there and why.
"Stalker." I giggled as I put the car in gear and pulled out of the parking lot.
Carter waited a few seconds, and only when I drove up to the barrier and collected my parking card did he move away as if nothing had happened. I glanced at the flowers, then the road, and pulled into traffic.
"Happy birthday to me." I sang to myself as I rushed home to get ready as quickly as possible for an unforgettable dinner with a man worth sinning.
