"Today marks a glorious day, my friend."
The Alpha King, Broderick, stands proudly with his chest poking out towards the empty white crib and smokes his freshly lit cigar. "Kathlene will bear my child, and our legacy will begin."
His trustworthy Beta, Cullen, pulls a cigarette from the inside pocket of his black leather jacket and taps it on the palm of his callused hand. "She has been in labor for quite a while. Maybe we should go check on her?"
"Ah, you aren't going soft on me, are you?" Broderick taps the mobile above the crib and teases.
"Soft?" He snorts, "Me? Never." Cullen tosses his hands carelessly in the air and lights his cigarette. Taking a moment, he savors the flavor of the nicotine and blows puffs of figure eights.
Broderick smirks. "Good. Good. We can't have a p***y for a beta, can we?"
"No, we can't, sir." he puffs out his chest, "Not in the Clidan Clan, at least."
"That's more like it."Broderick boasts proudly and smacks Cullen on the back of the shoulder.
"Oh, come on, Broderick. You know how I feel about pussy."
"Broderick snorts, "Yea, that's why I am surprised I am the one standing here dealing with having a baby today and not you."
"You're really funny, man." They both laugh while looking at the empty crib.
"But seriously, aren't you concerned that Kathlene has been in labor for over, what? Like, nineteen hours? That's a long time for a woman." He pauses and puffs while staring hard at the empty crib. "Broderick, maybe they should start considering ..."
Before Cullen could finish his words, the Alpha King's raging blue eyes shift from deep, amber yellow to deadening black. "They will consider nothing!" A growl rumbles from the depth of his throat. "My daughter and wife will be f*****g fine!"
Broderick stomps out of the nursery and makes his way down the long, dark hallway, mumbling to himself the entire time. "They will consider nothing, dammit! I should have his head for even suggesting such a thing! Maybe I should start considering chopping off his damn nuts too... humph!"
The closer he came to the bedroom, the connection to his Luna became stronger. The pain she is feeling through the walls reaches out to him no matter how tough he pretends to be. "Why couldn't she just have her baby in the hospital like everyone? A damn home birth of all types. Lord, give me strength if my daughter is as stubborn as my wife!" Faster, he marches down the hallway, the more his wife and wolf's side call to him.
Broderick is almost at the doorway when he hears an ear-piercing scream. Tiny hairs raise on the top of his arms as he sprints to the door. Once more, his wife screams again. "Please! I beg of you!"
"Kathlene!" He hollers out.
Kicking the door down with his steel toe boot, he scans the room for the first head to slaughter. Broderick's face runs pale the second he smells the pungent odor of blood, and sterile alcohol slams up his Alpha nose. Holding his nose, he looks up to the most horrific sight. There are so many nurses than he remembers seeing when he left his wife in the beginning. "Where the hell did you all come from?" He spat in fear.
His eyes scan the room, counting, "Four, five, six... God, how many does it take to deliver a child?"
All he can see is white and grey uniforms and splashes of crimson blood on his freshly installed white carpet, and the horrific sound of his wife pleading pain.
"For the love of God, if someone doesn't tell me what is going on, I will have their head for supper!"
One nurse with caramel skin and full-figured curves holds covers the sheet, making it harder for him to see. She warns with a deep tone, "Someone, gets him out of here before I do!"
Small black hair rises on the back of his neck and the tips of his pale knuckles. It was a matter of time before his inner wolf was ready to break free. "I am the Alpha King! You don't tell me what to do!" His voice booms through the room.
A man with silver hair and a s***h across his this matching brows removes his small frame glasses. Broderick recognizes him as the doctor the way he held the scalpel in his hand.
"Why the hell do, you have that!" Broderick cries in fear.
The doctor remains calm as he wipes the sweat from his brows, "Look, I don't care who you are; my only concern is the patient. I am here to keep her and the baby alive." He gave one hard look up and down to Broderick and shook his head, "And by the look on your face, you should be happy to let me do my job too. Now, please, sir, step outside and let me do my job."
It took everything he had not to lunge at the doctor, but his instincts told him the doctor was there to help too. Holding back his rage, he pleaded. "Fine, please at At least tell me what is wrong before I go?"
"I don't have time for this." The doctor says and begins working again.
"Nurse!" he commands.
The nurses scatter all around. All but one. The one with the caramel skin and the deep brown eyes and braids hair down her side. "The baby is breached. " She warns as she approaches Broderick, "But don't worry, we are fixing it right now."
"How? We don't have the equipment for that!" Broderick as nervously.
She walked up and gently lay her hands on top of his. "We will take care of it. Don't you worry, Alpha Broderick."
"Nurse Leigh, we really need your help... as soon as possible." The urgency in their voice and the plea in her eyes settle Broderick enough to allow her to walk away.
Cullen barges in the room past and Alpha Broderick. He has his chest poked out, ready for battle. "I heard the screaming! Is everything okay!" He looks up in horror, witnessing what Broderick had already seen. His face turns pale.
"Kathlene..." His voice cracks, and he falls to his knees.
