THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US

CHAPTER THREE

Ann walked through the hallway as she scanned the numbers on the door of each room trying to locate hers, she finally found it and as she walked in, she realized she already had a room mate. She dragged her bag slowly as she closed the door behind her. The blond haired girl who had been busy with something on her laptop immediately focused on Ann as she walked in. Ann knew she was going to be having a roommate so she wasn't so surprised when she got into the room and saw sophie.

The room was spacious, big enough for two people to move around comfortably. It also had a bathroom with a closet. It had two separate beds with each bed having it's own side table, where one can read and a side drawer. It was nice, similar to the one Ann stayed in back in Ohio states.

"Hey, I am sophie" she said facing Ann.

"I am Ann, nice to meet you" Ann said

putting her bag next to her bed before getting down to arrange it. Ann wasn't one who had lots of friends so she wasn't sure how she and Sophie were going to be like. She although hoped they would turn out to be good friends though. Sophie was the friendly type, free spirited with thousands of friends, they were quit opposite in somethings.

"I am here for my master and you?" Sophie asked trying to keep a conversation with Ann who seemed tired and uninterested in any other thing but to just sleep because she was tired.

"Yeah, same here" she answered.

"Did you finish from here" Sophie asked

"No, ohio state. I am actually from there too. This is my first time out of town and here in new york"Ann explained.

"Wow, nice, I actually got my degree from here. There is so much to see and enjoy in New York and I am sure you're going to love it here" Sophie said and Ann just stifled a smile.

Ann unpacked her stuffs as she wanted nothing but to sleep the rest of the day. Sophie left few minutes after Ann got in to see a friend so it was just her in the room now.

After Ann unpacked her stuffs, she layed on her bed exhausted, she really wanted nothing but to talk to Troy but he had told her about a meeting he was having later today Troy started working at a tech company just after graduation from Ohio states, it was his dream to work in one of the biggest companies and it was happening and she was happy for him. Their dreams were finally coming to past and it was amazing.

Ann decided to facetime her mum back instead.

"MaryAnn!! I have tried calling you all day. What happened to you"

"Mother, I am fine, I just got to my accommodation. I am very well. How is dad" she asked.

"He went out to get some things but he will be back soon"

"Tell him i said hello and i will talk to him later" Ann said

"You know you should trying informing me about everything going on"

"Mother, I am a grown up now, this isn't me as an undergraduate student in ohio states anymore, I am twenty one now mother, twenty one" she emphasized.

" you really don't need to baby me any more" Ann added and before her mother could go on and on again about how it didn't matter if she was 21 or 30 that she would still be their little girl, she ended the call.

Ann's parents were the very protective type. They always made sure she was close to home and always around. They had persuaded her to apply at Ohio states for her undergraduate even though she had actually wanted New york university but there was nothing she could do and even at 20 when she wanted to move out of the house and stay with troy, they didn't accept at first but didn't have a choice after promised she was going to run away from home if she wasn't allowed. Ann was their only child, she was their everything and more. Ann was about to fall asleep when she heard her phone buzzing again, at first she had thought it was her mum but then it turned out to have been Troy facetiming her.

"Hello baby" Troy said with his seductive smile. She missed him so much already like she had been gone for a year, she wished she could just hug him through the phone or kiss him instead. He was so close, yet so far away..

"Hello, I miss you already" Ann said as she placed her tablet in front of her face while laying on her bed.

"I miss you even more, I wish you were here right now" Troy said

"Same here, this place will be so boring without you"

"Just hang in there Alright, till the next time I see you. I will come over as soon as I have a break" Troy affirmed.

"I really can't wait to see you again, it feels like I have been gone forever" Ann said sadly

"Cheer up, love, stay fine and have fun for two in new york" Troy said and Ann forces a smile on her face.

"I love you"

"I love you more"

"Ohh, is that your boyfriend" Ann looked up in the direction of the voice and realized that Sofie had entered the room back.

"Yeah" she answered

"Is he in New york"Sofie asked

"No"

"Ohh, long distance. That's going to be pretty tough I guess" Sofie said

"We will make it work, I know that"Ann said and she could notice Sofie's reaction to it. Why did everyone think long distance never works, it can work and she was determined to make it work. She wasn't going to be defined by stereotypes. She knew what she wanted and that was Troy and she doesn't plan on letting go of him anytime soon"
