While David drove us anywhere but home, I stared out of the window in a pensive state and watched the beach homes and palm trees race by. It was afternoon, and the fireworks show wouldn’t start until tonight. We had plenty of time to kill before we had to make it back home to then go to the beach with Mom where the show would take place. David grabbed my hand and toyed with my fingers. He drew out a long breath with his mouth corners wilting. “Brit told me to have a nice life and that she can’t be responsible for whatever your mom could find out. Almost like she was threatening me, but I wasn’t sure.” Great. Just great. “She kind of said something similar to me on the phone. I felt terrible. I still do.” “Well, I want you not her. She’s just going to have to accept that and get over it.
