Faith
“What the hell is that?” I squeaked when another boom shook the windows. Causing a thin trail of dust to dislodge from the ceiling. I gripped his arm, cursing the long skirts he seemed to like putting me in as I tripped and almost went down.
I really really wanted my trainers back on my feet.
“Cannons”
Dillon didn’t look fazed at all, he would have kept on walking if I hadn’t of stopped him. “Wait one god damn moment, cannons?” My voice was growing so high that soon only dogs would be able to hear it. “Did you say your brother is firing cannons at us?”
He shrugged but a small smile was turning up the corners of his mouth.
“Dillon you have to know this isn’t normal, someone could get hurt”
He paused for a moment. “Siblings fight”
I huffed at him as his hand curled around mine, dragging me behind him. He couldn’t seriously think this was normal behaviour. “Sure siblings fight Dillon but they don’t fire Cannons at each other!”
“This is the way we have been forever, he always covets what I have. Hell he is always jealous of everything we all have. So the battle is always waging”
The way he said it. He had shown me the bid side of his kingdom but he hadn’t even mentioned this.
“Battle? Are you at war with your brothers? With Declan and the other Sins?” I tugged him to a halt again, I needed answers and by god he was going to give me them. “How long has this madness been going on?”
“It’s not constant Faith, but the war has been going on eons” His face betrayed how bored he was with the conversation. And my anger bristled. Thick and prickly. “Sometimes we get bored”
“So you fire cannons at each other?”
“No Declan likes cannons, they make a Big Bang and he likes being showy. The only one who really gets nasty is Hunter. Things can get …” He chuckled “interesting”
“And you all have armies? People are actually hurt?” I didn’t even understand why he couldn’t get what I was saying.
“It’s just something to help us pass the time Faith, come on I want to show you” He seemed almost giddy with the prospect.
Was this all just a game to them?
“Do men get hurt, do they get killed?”
“There are no men here , Faith. Just demons and beasts. Some ghouls and the like” He whirled suddenly. And his eyes flashed. “I cant describe it to you, you will have to see for yourself”
“You are playing a game with peoples lives Dillon” I couldn’t keep the anger out of my voice any longer and his face darkened.
“They aren’t people , don’t talk about things you don’t understand Faith”
I couldn’t help it I balled my hands into fists. Don’t talk about things I didn’t understand? How could I understand when he wouldn’t explain it to me? And this was the kingdom he wanted me to rule? By his side?
It wasn’t me who didn’t understand. It was him.
“Then explain it to me, these are your people? Don’t you have an obligation to keep them safe and not use them as pawns for some lame ass board game you are playing?”
“Lame ass…” His voice was deepening , anger poured off him in waves. His pretty brown eyes flashed scarlet and I stifled a small scream.
Where had the sweet Dillon gone? Where was the gorgeous boy who had held me as I slept . Who had kissed my lips so tenderly?
“Yeah lame” I didn’t back down , it wasn’t in my nature. Not even when I came face to face with a real life devil. “Lame, punk Ass”
He roared , “stop it Faith, stop trying to make me lose my human side. You won’t like what you see”
“I’m not liking what I see right now anyway”
His face fell. “Don’t say that”
“Truth hurts” I had always had a lousy temper, and a habit of speaking before I fully thought it through. Today was no different.
“Faith” His voice was murderous. “ I think maybe you should go back to your room”
“Suits me fine” I turned on my heel and stalked away. Flipping him the finger over my shoulder.
“You are impossible, will you just wait and I will find someone to walk you back” He was standing, feet hips distance apart with his hands on his hips.
“Don’t bother”
