"Of course, I was waiting for you!" Dr Adrian's mother replied haughtily as she enveloped him in a mama bear hug.
I stood up from my chair, watching the doctor's face redden as his mother blew him kisses and then stroked his hair while she asked if he had washed his underwear while he was away.
I bit the inside of my cheek to keep myself from laughing because the situation was quite hilarious. Neil was still scowling, Misha was still cooing, and Dr Adrian was still blushing.
"I think that's enough, Mother. Why don't you introduce me to your new guest?" He said, meeting my eyes with a wink, while I tried to hold in my laughter, "You never told me that we had another addition to our house."
The doctor was handsome, I had to admit. He had the perfect features, a set of beautiful, blue, twinkling eyes, flushed cheeks from all the coddling he just received from his mother, and a perfect physique that could only belong to a man who looked after himself well. It was obvious that he was just a year or two elder to Neil, and with the way he was looking at me, he was still single and on the prowl.
"Oh, Adrian, you would have known only if you picked up my calls and come back sooner." Misha shook her head and wound her arm through his, "Keep down your bags and I'll introduce you to this pretty lady." She said, and dragged him over to make him stand right in front of me.
"Myra, I think by now you've gotten the idea who this young man is," Misha said proudly and I nodded my head with a smile, "This is my only son, Adrian. Adrian, this young lady is Myra, from India, and M brought her here."
"Hi, Myra." The doctor grinned at me charmingly, bending over my hand and kissing it in a way that I felt like I should have curtsied before. However, I remained standing and blushed to my roots when his lips lingered on my hand.
And that was when my hand was suddenly yanked off by none other than Neil who punctuated his action by saying, "I think you should join us as we were having dinner. Then Myra and you can finally have the talk we were waiting for." He smiled tightly.
I fought the urge to roll my eyes at him.
"What talk?" Dr Adrian furrowed his brows, "As far as I know, I've met you for the first time, Myra, so there's nothing really I can talk to you about."
I was about to open my mouth to speak but Neil butted in: "I'm accompanying Myra back to India, tomorrow. She needs to know the particulars so that she knows how to take care of me till I regain my memories."
Dr Adrian frowned even more deeply as he stared at me. He looked mildly disappointed and looked like he didn't know what he was about to do was right or not.
"I'm not hungry, M, but thank you very much for your offer." He said, curtly, "However, I would just freshen up and come back. Till then, you can continue with your dinner."
After a little more small talk, he picked up his bags and strode down the hallway.
Misha sighed, "Oh, I wished you could stay here longer, Myra. I think my son has taken a liking towards you."
I was saved from giving a reply because it was Neil who muttered under his breath, "I think that's the reason we should hurry our departure."
This time, I did roll my eyes. There were a lot of things Neil needed to be reminded about me and not being overly possessive was one of them.
***********************
I was summoned to Dr Adrian's office when I went back to my room after dinner. Neil accompanied me the whole way to the outside of the office, and I had checked thrice if he was still out there, eavesdropping with his ears pressed to the door. If he was, he was in for a big surprise which I didn't want to give him so soon.
"Hello, Dr Adrian. I hope I'm not rushing you with things here."
"No, you're not, and please just call me Adrian." He said, shaking my hand a bit more professionally this time.
I sat on the seat across him, and opened my mouth to speak but closed it. How was I supposed to start? Awkward silence lingered for a while, making me wonder if I would ever be able to tell him properly before my flight back to India.
"So..." Adrian started, "You know him."
It was a simple statement, but it made me scrunch up my nose and meet his eyes, "Is it that obvious?"
"It's not you." He said, sighing and shaking his head with a smile on his face, "But the lovesick and jealous man who will be going along with you tomorrow surely makes it quite obvious. I believe you are here to tell me just about that?"
I nodded my head. "Yes, I am. I also want to know what I am supposed to tell him and what I am supposed to keep hidden."
"Can you tell me about him and what is the relation between you two first? I'm curious." He asked.
"Yes." I sighed, "His name is Neil, Neil Singhania. I was his ex-fiancee."
"Can I...search him on f*******: or something to confirm his identity?" He asked, and I smiled.
"I think Googling him would be enough." I told him.
Adrian raised a brow, and typed into his laptop. He waited for sometime for the page to load while I searched his face for his reaction.
His eyes looked like they would pop out of their sockets anytime now.
"The man outside, whom I've been treating for the past four months, is the CEO of the company that is sponsoring my hospital? I can't believe I didn't recognize him before!" He sounded like an excited child who had just met his idol, "This is unbelievable! I had always been so grateful to him for taking an interest in a small hospital like mine, and here he is..."
His eyes didn't leave the screen yet, he was still searching for images and more information on him. If you asked me, I would even say that he forgot for that moment that I even existed.
"God! This man is a celebrity! You are going to have a hard time keeping him hidden until he is ready to come out in the world." He mumbled, absolutely shocked. "Wait, is that you next to him in this picture?" He turned his laptop to me and showed me a picture the media paps had clicked when we were attending a wedding together.
"Yes, that's both of us."
"It says: The Power couple, recently engaged, had a falling out two months before his death. Sources say that Myra Bhatt was the reason behind Neil Singhania's poor state of mind which lead to his death. s**t! That's a lot of bullshit there. What's the real truth, Myra Bhatt?"
He turned his head to me and narrowed his eyes.
"Like I told you, I am his ex-fiancee. Some two months before the accident, Neil had proposed to me for marriage, but broke the engagement a week later. Two months later, I get to hear that he got himself killed while bungee jumping, and four months later, I came here to search for him." I sighed. "It was he who found me."
Adrian looked confused, "Why did he break your engagement?"
I shrugged, "He needed space."
"Again, that's bullshit." He said, and I inwardly thought how he was so much like Misha, "With the way he was behaving at my arrival today, I hardly believe that he let you breathe since the past few days that you were here. If he is so possessive over you when he doesn't remember you, I don't understand why he would want space when he actually wanted to marry you."
I took in a deep breath and released it, "I don't know about that." I didn't want to get into an argument with him. Misha was enough to drain my brains, "All I know is that I need to take him back to India, but I don't know how to help him."
Adrian leaned his elbows on the table and rubbed his forehead, "This case is slightly complicated since my patient is a man of importance. His privacy is incredibly necessary, yet him being in familiar surroundings is necessary, too. You will have to take him back to your city, but you have to make sure that no one recognises him. And for that, you will have to explain a few things to him without actually revealing anything. Do you think you can do that?" He asked.
I thought deeply. Could I really do that? I needed to get in touch with Neil's security detail once I was back in Chandigarh, especially his old, trusted bodyguard Prakash Uncle.
"Look, Myra. I usually do not handle such high-profile and delicate cases, so I don't have any knowledge of the necessary precautions to be taken except for the signing of the non-disclosure agreement. I assure you, though, I would never reveal to anyone that he is still alive."
I nodded, "Is there anything that I can tell him right now? I feel uneasy hiding things from him like this. Also, I need to know how long he will take to regain his memories. I don't think I will be able to stay with him for too long."
Adrian shook his head, "I'm sorry, but I can't tell you how long he will take. All I know is that telling him everything will only lead to him taking a lot of stress which is not good for him. Start telling him things one by one, and slowly - only if you realize that he is on the brink of remembering that one thing. For instance, right now, you can tell him his name, only. That will give him some hope of remembering and will stop him from pressurizing himself as well. Other than that, I will pass on his profile to a friend of mine in Chandigarh who deals with such cases. I'm sure he will help you. I will mail you his contact information soon." He said, focusing on his laptop again.
"Thank you so much, Adrian." I whispered gratefully, "You have no idea what you have done for me. I had almost believed that he was..."
"Hey," he immediately reached out and held my hand, "It will all be alright soon. I can see how much you both love each other no matter what the circumstances were before. Everything will get back to normal.
Then, there was a loud slam.
The door to his office opened without any preamble and in barged Neil.
Once again, I was sure he had lost all his manners, "I think the both of you have talked for long enough."
And then his gaze zeroed in on Adrian's hand that had covered mine in a comforting gesture.
I sighed loudly.
This man was acting like such a child.
