When Friday rolled around, Eric said he’d swing by Jenny’s apartment to pick her up for the party. It was out in the county a ways, which was why the guy put it on every year for his kids—there weren’t many neighbors nearby for them to get much from trick-or-treating, so they stayed home and had fun at the party instead. Though it started at five, before the sun even set, Eric didn’t want to show up before eight, when he said the kids usually got tired of hanging around with the adults and retreated to a back room to watch cartoons while the adults could mingle by the food and beer. It was a good twenty minutes’ drive from Richmond out to the guy’s house, so Eric said he and Mike could stop by Jenny’s at seven. “You said they don’t break out the booze until eight,” she pointed out.
