First Day Not So High

1062 Words
We just entered the hallway and I already want to go home. First days are always the hardest for me. There’s a lot of people in my vision right now and the sound of chatter and shouting surrounds my head and it’s just all so overwhelming. I try my best to look composed as I ball my fists and dig my nails deep inside my palms in attempt to try and feel anything other than being overwhelmed. “Hey, you okay?” Adam asked. He must have noticed my fists. “Yeah, I will be.” I assure him. “Okay, don’t forget to breathe,” he said jokingly and reminding me of that one time in 5th grade where I was in so much shock of seeing a bird get shot that I forgot to breathe. “I won’t.” I chuckle and that made me forget about what I was feeling just now. Five minutes into the building and Adam’s douchey troupe already found him. “Yo, Adam!” One of his jockey friends shouted. Adam nods and looks back at me and says, “See you later, V. Try not to die without me,” “Ugh, as if. Adios!,” I said as I waved him goodbye. He went on with them and we part ways like two strangers who coincidentally just entered a building at the same time. The thing I forgot to mention about Adam is that he is the King of Hawkins High School. He has the looks and everything. Luscious chestnut hair that’s perfectly swept back with just the right amount of gel and a tall, muscular build that looks like he works out every single day but it’s really the work his dad lets him do. My first class today is chemistry. Mr. Ainsley, our teacher was still not here so I rest my head on the desk and closed my eyes for a bit. After a few minutes of resting, a complete silence in the room made it clear that our chem teacher has entered his domain. His white hair and strict looks, would have not you believe how warm and affable he is. He is probably the only teacher I like at school. I listened to him talk about sugar. As the class ended, I head down to Literature class. We were asked to read “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott the gave us homework. I already know this is going to be the first of many assignments she is going to be giving us. The bell rang and it was time for lunch. I went on to the cafeteria and looked for an empty table. I found one near the vending machine and so I head towards there. Sometimes, Adam and I eat lunch together but most times he eats with his troupe. I take out my lunch bag, eager to eat because I am starving. I turn my face back towards the table again and there was Adam, sitting in front of me. “Hey, Dum. Surprised to see you here,” I said. “I wanted to see if you were still alive. Did you not forget to breathe?,” he said in a firm tone. Why is he so serious? “I’m fine, still intact and in one piece.” I match his firm tone. “Goods.” He settles in and takes his lunch out. He usually eats and sits with his troupe, so I ask him “Uhh, are you not going to be sitting with your other friends?” “Nah, we’re going somewhere later anyway so I can just catch up with them there and besides, we agreed on sharing our lunches together today, didn’t we?,” Adam said as he took my lunch out from the paper bag and started to set our food on the table. Adam always knew what I felt even if I don’t say anything. I appreciate him a lot for it. He went on talking about his first day and how he got seated next to this cute girl. He talks and I listen to him. That’s our dynamic. I continue to listen to him when I saw someone enter the cafeteria. It was Landon and his group of friends. They sit at the tables in the middle of the cafeteria, a couple of tables away from me. I tried my best to keep my attention on to what Adam was saying but I can’t help it. My eyes kept going back to Landon. “Earth to V! Hello?” Adam clicked his fingers in my face bringing my attention back to him. He probably noticed that I was no longer listening and that I was staring at Landon. Adam looked at him and then back at me. “Do you like him?,” Adam asked in a teasing tone. “Wh-what?” I stuttered. “NO....not even remotely close!” That is when I half-lied. I do not know if I actually like Landon. He is handsome with a back as wide as the sky and arms that could easily lift you, and his dark emerald eyes. But it was the way he swiftly handles himself is what made me notice him but, I still don’t know how I feel about him. “For the first time in my whole life of knowing you, Veronica Kate Myers has a crush!” He shouts and stands. “Why are you such an attention seeker?” I ask in a hushed voice. “I so am not! I am offended.” Adam dramatically said with his hands on his chest, acting like he just got shot. “You are so dramatic.” I shake my head. “Let’s just finish lunch quietly, please?,” I asked him. “All right, miss I-have-a-crush-on-mister-hottie-Landon,” Adam said teasingly. I was too tired to retort back and so I just rolled my eyes and finished lunch. The day had gone by so fast, class after class. Later that afternoon I fell asleep while doing homework. It was already dark outside when I woke up. Before going downstairs to eat dinner, I checked my phone for any updates on this WebToon that I was reading. I was about to turn my phone off when suddenly, I see an unfamiliar notification.
