An Unwelcome Visit

1115 Words
Lyra was deep in concentration, poring over the latest batch of medical records, when Aria burst into her office, hazel eyes wide with alarm. "Lyra, they're here," she said, her voice tight with urgency. "The Seekers, they're at the front door." Lyra's heart plummeted, but she forced herself to remain calm. This wasn't the first time the Seekers had come knocking, and she had always managed to send them away without incident. She rose from her desk, smoothing her hands over her skirt. "Alright, let's show them around, just like we rehearsed. Make sure the children know to stay calm and act natural." Aria nodded, already moving towards the door. "I'll let Marcus know to keep an eye on things from the security room." Lyra followed her friend out into the hallway, her mind racing. She reached out with her powers, feeling for the familiar presence of the Seekers. There were two of them, a man and a woman, their auras pulsing with suspicion and determination. She plastered a welcoming smile on her face as she opened the front door, greeting the Seekers with a warm handshake. "Welcome to the Maxwell Home for Orphaned Children" Lyra said. "I'm Lyra Maxwell, the director. How may I assist you today?" The male Seeker, a tall, imposing figure with cold blue eyes, held up a badge. "Agent Thompson, Department of Youth Services. This is my partner, Agent Davis. We're here to conduct a routine inspection of your facility." Lyra nodded, her smile never wavering. "Of course, please come in. I'd be happy to give you a full tour." As she led the Seekers through the manor, Lyra kept up a steady stream of chatter, pointing out the various amenities and programs offered to the children. She could feel the Seekers' eyes on her, probing, searching for any sign of deception. In the classrooms, the children sat attentively, their faces a mix of concentration, and carefully concealed apprehension. Lyra could sense their fear, their unease at the presence of the Seekers, but they held themselves with a poise beyond their years. It wasn't until they reached the gardens that the facade began to crack. As they rounded a corner, Lyra spotted Jada crouched beside a flowerbed, her hand outstretched towards a small sparrow. The bird hopped closer, its head c****d as if listening to a secret conversation. Agent Davis's eyes narrowed, her suspicion palpable. "What's going on here?" she demanded, striding towards Jada. Lyra's heart raced, but she kept her voice calm and even. "Jada has a way with animals," she said, placing a gentle hand on the girl's shoulder. "She's always been drawn to them, even before she came to us." Agent Thompson's gaze was sharp, assessing. "And what exactly is the nature of her... gift?" Lyra met his stare, her mind reaching out to brush against his, seeking to blur the edges of his suspicion. "Jada is a sensitive child," she said, her words laced with a subtle persuasion. "She has a deep empathy for all living creatures. It's a rare and beautiful trait, but nothing more." She could feel the Seeker's mind resisting, pushing back against her influence, but she held firm. Slowly, gradually, she felt his doubt begin to recede, replaced by a hazy acceptance of her explanation. Agent Davis, however, was not so easily swayed. "I've never seen a child with such a... connection to animals," she said, her tone laced with skepticism. "It's almost as if she can communicate with them." Lyra laughed, the sound carefully crafted to put the Seekers at ease. "Children have a way of surprising us," she said, steering them away from Jada and back towards the manor. "Their imaginations are so vivid, so unbounded. It's one of the joys of working with them." As the tour continued, Lyra could feel the weight of the Seekers' scrutiny bearing down on her. Every interaction, every moment was a test, a challenge to maintain the illusion of normalcy. By the time they reached the entrance hall once more, Lyra's mind was racing, her powers stretched to their limits. She had managed to deflect the Seekers' suspicions, to keep them from delving too deeply into the true nature of the children's abilities, but she knew it was a temporary reprieve at best. "Well, I think that concludes our inspection," Agent Thompson said, his tone clipped and formal. "Thank you for your cooperation, Ms. Maxwell. We'll be in touch if we have any further questions." Lyra smiled, the gesture feeling brittle on her face. "Of course. The Maxwell Home is always open to the Department of Youth Services. The wellbeing of the children is our top priority." As the Seekers departed, Lyra sagged against the wall, her heart racing. She had managed to deceive them for now, but she didn't need powers to sense the frustration the Seekers felt at leaving empty-handed again. She knew it was only a matter of time before they returned. Lyra straightened, squaring her shoulders as she turned back towards the heart of the manor. She was just about to head back to her office when Marcus appeared, his face etched with worry. "Lyra, we have a problem." Lyra's stomach dropped at the urgency in his tone. Marcus was not easily rattled, and if he was coming to her directly, it could only mean trouble. "What is it, Marcus?" "Not here," he said, glancing around the hallway. "Let's go to your office." As they walked briskly towards her office, Lyra's mind raced with possibilities. Had one of the children accidentally revealed their powers? Had the Seekers seen something she'd missed? Just as they rounded the corner, Aria appeared, her face pale and her eyes haunted. "Lyra, I need to speak with you. I had a vision." Lyra's heart pounded in her chest. For both Marcus and Aria to seek her out so soon after the Seekers' visit, something must have gone terribly wrong. She took a deep breath, trying to calm the fear that threatened to overwhelm her. "Come with us to my office," she said, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside her. "You can tell me everything there." Lyra felt a chill run down her spine. Aria's visions were never wrong. As they walked in tense silence, Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that a storm was coming that would test the very foundations of the life they had built. The Seekers were suspicious. Aria had seen a vision of the future. And Marcus... whatever he had witnessed, it was enough to rattle even his unflappable calm. She glanced out the window, saw the dark clouds gathering on the horizon, and felt a shiver of foreboding.
