Chapter Two

1904 Words
~Aiden~ My entire goal moving to this new town is to stay under the radar. In no way do I like humans, in honesty they annoy me. They are weak and superficial. But for now, I need to blend in with them. The bar should be an easy job. It's a small town, so I know it will only attract a small amount of business. The owner is also a landlord and easily negotiates a discounted rental rate for employees. It also makes it easy for me to go from work to home, allowing me to avoid any unnecessary interactions. I am confident I have everything all set, that is until I catch onto my mate's scent. Of all my luck, she has to be a human, and not just that, she works at the same damn bar. She is young with black hair and eyes that stand out, one green and one blue. She has a tiny frame, and I can tell from a bandage on her hand that she gets hurt easily. She is going to make it difficult for me. I have no intention of accepting a mate bond. All fate has ever done is f**k with me. But just because I have no intentions, it does not stop my damn wolf fang from being insistent we now keep an eye on her. It does not take long to realize she must be some sort of magnet for trouble when several warriors from a pack show up as well when we were working. Once she was in her room, I go outside to try and find them. I have a feeling they will stick around after the trouble caused at the bar, and sure enough, they have tracked her to this building. Why they are taking interest in a human girl is above me. It's not normal for wolves that are not rogue to visit Human territory unless they have important business, and it's also rare to see them tracking a human. But I can tell from the moment I see them in the bar, Faith is who they came for. The question is why. I growl as I turn the corner. I am in a horrible mood, so maybe fighting these assholes will allow me to blow off some steam. "What's a dirty rat like you doing around here?" one of them asks me as I make my presence known. "The only rats here are you three. Kinda far from your pack lands. Did you get lost?" I smirk. "We will give you one chance to leave, rogue. This is not of your concern," the largest of the three speaks, only causing me to chuckle. "It became my concern the moment you walked into my job," I growl as my fist makes contact with his face. I am fast, so my attack catches him off guard. "Pathetic for a warrior," I tease as they all three start to go at me. I spit blood onto the ground as one lands a decent punch in my side. This is pointless fighting like this. Fang wants to be let loose. But a wolf fight this close to humans would spell even more trouble, so I take off running, knowing well these three will follow. As I run, I could have sworn I catch a glimpse of Faith looking out of her window. I need to get her off my mind. Once in a wooded area, I shift into my wolf form. The three wolves following me follow suit as I snarl at them and attack. I doubt they are expecting a rogue wolf to be so big, but the thing is, I have Alpha blood. They have pissed off the wrong person. The taste of blood fills my mouth as I violently attack them. The sound of a gunshot fills the surroundings, interrupting our fight as the three wolves take off. "Just when I'm having fun," I growl as I run back towards the apartment building, making sure I am not seen. Then, I shift back into my human form and quickly make my way to my unit so I can get dressed. Her scent, it is intoxicating. How can a human have such a strong alluring scent? My wolf is going wild, he wants me to go into her unit, he wants to hold her and make her his, but I push him back, going into mine. I look in my small bathroom mirror, and I have a decent gash on my chest. I grab a cloth to put on it and then go to bed. So much for keeping away from trouble. __________ Bright sunlight filters into my room. I doubt I even got a full two hours of sleep as I hear commotion in the building hallway. The walls here are clearly like tissue paper with how loud it is. Laughter echoes in the hall, annoying me as I make my way to my door and open it. "Shut up," I snap as a guy's attention shoots at me. He's in front of Faith's door. "Sorry, we got carried away," he apologizes as Faith's eyes meet mine from her doorway. "Let's get going," she says to the guy in the hall as she grabs his hand and walks out, closing the door. The guy's phone rings. "One moment," he says to Faith as he steps to the side. She looks at me again. "Morning Aiden, Since you are new in town, if you need help finding any place here, feel free to knock on my door," she says. "Thanks," I mutter as I turn to go back inside my apartment. But as I do, the guy approaches Faith again. "Faith, I'm sorry. Melissa is throwing a fit. I have to go. But I can get you an Uber," he says to her. "I understand. I can walk. Don't worry about it, Josh," she says as he runs off. I sigh. "You need a ride?" I ask her. "No, thanks. I'm fine walking," she responds as she starts to leave. I go into my apartment and grab a fresh shirt and toss it on. I should just let her go. I'm out of my mind, but Fang is going wild in me right now. "We are not accepting her," I tell him in my mind and he simply huffs as I close my door and run outside to catch up to her. She looks at me as I catch up. "I told you not to worry about it," she says. "I need the fresh air," I lie as I trail next to her silently. After about fifteen minutes, she walks up to a small restaurant. "I would say don't wait, but I'm assuming you will ignore my request," she says as she knocks on the door and goes in for a moment. I stand by the building waiting. "Something is not normal about our mate," Fang speaks in my mind. "She won't be our mate for long," I mutter back to him. "You say that, but I don't believe you. You want her just as badly as I do," he speaks in my mind. "I don't even know anything about her," I respond. "Then get to know our mate before rejecting her," Fang snaps at me in my mind, causing a growl to slip, of course, it was right as she was walking out. "Did you just growl?" she asks, looking at me. "All done," I say, ignoring her questions. "I'll be out all day unfortunately, but as I said, I am fine on my own," she responds. "I'll follow, it's a good way to learn my way around," I say to her. "Very well, I guess you will see a lot of the city since I've got to put applications into as many places hiring," she sighs. "You need another job?" I ask her. "Yeah, just got fired from the place I went into," she groans. "the bar is not enough?" I ask her, "No, Joe gives me good hours, but it's not enough to pay all my bills," she admits, "you look young To be paying all your bills," I say as I walk behind her, "you're a lot more talkative today," she mutters, "Just trying to get to know you since I know no one here," I explain, and she nods. "I've been on my own for a few months now. I'm eighteen, so I guess I'm young, but I'm handling it just fine," she admits. "Eighteen," I say, shocked. I thought she was at least twenty-one since she works at the bar, "you don't have family to help you?" I ask her, "No, they're gone, and I don't want to talk about it" she responds, yet her voice is strained, it's clear something bad had happened. I keeo silent as I follow her to several joints as she puts in applications. After a while, she seems to slow down, and I can tell she's not feeling well, yet she doesn't say anything. "Since you let me tag along with you, how about I treat you to lunch?" I say to her, honestly just wanting her to calm down for a moment. "We can get food, but you don't have to pay for me," she responds as she points down the street, "there is a small Cafe this way," she says, leading me to it. The two of us place orders and then get a table. "Looks like they're hiring, I'll be back, I'm going to talk to the manager," she says as I sit and wait. It's not long before she comes back and sits down, “I was able to get a job starting tomorrow morning," she says with a tired smile. I congratulate her as we eat the small meal before walking back. Once we make it to our building, she looks at me and says, "Thanks for tagging along with me today. I hope you at least got to learn your way around." I hear her phone buzz, and she quickly answers it. "Hey Josh, I just got home," she says on her phone as we walk into the building. "I know, I'm taking it easy. You know you aren't my mother," she sighs on the phone. I can't help but chuckle. "Fine, I'll be home if you insist. I'll go," she mutters and then hangs up her phone as we reach our doors. "I have off tonight, but I'm sure I'll see you around," she says as she unlocks her door. I'm upset that this Josh fellow seems to be coming over, but it's not like I can stop her. She has no idea what I am to her, and that's a good thing. It will stay that way. As I enter my apartment, I relax on the small couch. I have several hours before I have to work. "We should be across the hall with our mate. I'm telling you, Aiden, she needs us. Something is different about her. I know you smell it, and so do those wolves. She's not safe alone," Fang speaks in my mind. "If we crowd her, we'll frighten her. Not to mention, we already attract danger. She's a weak human. We shouldn't involve her in our world," I growl back at my wolf as I close my eyes, pushing him away so I can rest.
