Chapter 15

2123 Words
After lunch at the cafe, we went spent the rest of the day, back at Celine's house, watching funny tv shows, drinking some very expensive wine her boss had given her as a gift, and engaging in some more harmless gossip.  Celine had even tried to convince me to stay the night over. That, of course, was impossible because Lucas would totally flip if I left the kids for one night without informing him, plus I missed them already. She was adamant, and I had to bribe her with fresh gossip if anything happened between Lucas and me.  "You'll call me when you get back right?" she asked as we walked out of her apartment complex.  "Yes, Nicole, for the hundredth time, I will call you."  "I've only asked 3 times," she chuckled. "Same thing," I laughed too. As we walked down, the first thing that caught my eye was the beautiful man leaning on the red Ferrari across the street, arms folded, scrolling through his phone at the parking lot. "No, he didn't," I muttered. "What?" Celine asked, and I turned my head toward Lucas. "Who is he?"   "Asshole boss, otherwise known as Lucas Maxwell." I snorted.  "What, that's him?" she gasped.  "Yes, now stop hyperventilating C," I said exaggeratedly.  "I will hyperventilate because f**k that man is fire." she squealed. "Lower your voice, he's not that far." Lucas was still on his phone, his attention undivided, and he only released his arms, to adjust his baseball hat. He looked almost casual in the blue jean and white t-shirt that did nothing to hide his trim perfectly muscled body. "I bet angels get jealous when they look at him because..."  "he's an asshole." I completed.  "A sexy asshole, yeah." "Why don't we make an exchange, I take your boss, and you take mine," I wiggled my brows ruefully.  "Keep your eyes and hands off my man." she shot quickly, giving me a sharp look, and soon enough, we were rolling with laughter.  "Let's just go find out what he wants."  We walked to the road and crossed over to meet him. He did not bother raising his head as we approached him, and I questioned my earlier conclusion that he had not seen us coming.  "Took you long enough," he said without raising his head from his phone. "What are you even doing here," I demanded. "We need to go somewhere," he straightened and shoved his phone in his pocket, finally meeting my eyes.  "Where are we going," I asked, as he stepped closer. "You'll see, let's get going."  "Hello," Celine said, interrupting me from further protest.   "Hi," Lucas replied in his deep gruff voice.  I had almost forgotten that she was standing right there. "Um... this is Celine, my best friend. Celine, this is my boss." I emphasized the boss, adding a silent asshole, and Celine seemed to get the message, as she swallowed a snicker. She stretched her hand out, and to my surprise, he took it with no hesitation. I guess I'm the only one he enjoys being an asshole around, I thought. But then again, not everyone shares a face with the woman he seems to hate.  "Lucas Maxwell," he said, as he gave her hand a firm shake.  "I know," Celine said with a smile, and my eyes widened in shock at her next words, "my friend here has told me all about you,"  "Oh, has she?" Lucas had an amused smile on his face, and I knew I would hear of this later.  "And I must say, you are even more handsome than her words explained." I shot Celine an icy glare which she returned with a wry smile. I am so going to kill her. Where is a magic wand when you need one to make yourself disappear?  Lucas's smile deepened as she threw more coal to his fiery ego. He flashed me a knowing smile as he said, "well thank you." to which I rolled my eyes.  "I should let you go, but please can I have a minute with her before you take her away for another month?"  "Of course," Lucas said, "I'll be waiting in the car."  She spun me around the second he closed the car door. "What the f**k was that about C?" I whispered harshly. "That was me setting you up to get laid soon. Besides, I did not lie, you have been drooling over the guy."  "But it does not mean you can just go telling him that," I whispered again, from the corner of my eye, I could see Lucas, his focus had drifted back to his phone and I could only wonder what he was so busy with.  "Yes I can, if he knows how you feel about him, he may stop being such a jerk to you, and problem solved. You get laid, and have a better work relationship with your boss." she said and flashed me a smile that said, "I'm a friggin genius."  "Yeah, of course, a very good plan," I said dryly, "but you forgot the part where he is my boss and I would have to see him every day after that, and things would get really awkward between us." "When you get to that bridge you'll cross it, for now, accept that you are attracted to him, and let loose. I've never known you to be so stiff."  "Whatever," I released a tired sigh. "Know that I'm getting back at you for this though," I smacked her shoulder playfully. "You won't be thinking about revenge on me when he's making you scream his name, with orgasmic rhythm," she wriggled her brows.  "Get out of here C," I said, unable to hold back the sheepish laugh that burst out.  She joined in the laugh too, and I gave her a tight hug before letting her go. We said our "byes, and see you later," before she crossed back to the other side of the road. I turned to open the other side of the car, but being the weirdo she was, Celine shouted "I love you," all the way from where she stood.  Without minding all the stares and glares being thrown at us by everyone else—Lucas included, I shouted an "I love you too," back to her, and climbed as gracefully as my legs could into the Ferrari.  The car roared to life, and Lucas drove down the street and out of the neighborhood. The drive was silent for the first few minutes, and Lucas had finally put his phone away.  "You two seem close," he said, breaking the awkward silence.  "Hmm, I've known her since I was a child," I admitted.  "Ah, that explains why it was easy to tell her about your handsome boss," he flashed me a charming smile, that made him look even sexier. "Are you really going to bring that up right now?" I said, looking out the window, but that did not do much to hide my embarrassment. He chuckled and said, "I'll drop it if you tell me what you really think."  I scoffed at his request and turned to look at him. "I don't think you need me to tell you that you are a very handsome man Lucas."   "I knew that, but you can't blame me for needing a little reminder." if I didn't know better, I would say he was blushing. "And I was not asking just about that."  "What else?"  "How you feel," he said simply.  I took a deep breath, and turned to the window again, to hide the heat growing on my cheeks. "I'm not talking about that topic, because there is nothing to say on it." "Why did you pull away last night?" he asked after a beat of silence, his eyes fixed on the road.  "What?"  "You knew I was going to kiss you, why did you pull back?" "I don't want to talk about that either," I said without meaning to sound so defensive. Before he could extend it further, I changed the topic. "Where are we going?"  "You'll see," he said simply, and we shifted back into that awkward silence. After almost an hour of driving in silence, he pulled over at a car lot. My mouth widened as we drove through, apart from the few cars like the Ferrari, and a Bentley, I could not recognize most of the other cars. It would not take a genius to realize that these cars were worth a great deal higher than my salary presently.  I tore my eyes away from the window as he parked the car. "You want to get a new car?" I asked as I released the seat belt.  "Yes, your car," he said casually.  "W-what?" my eyes widened, and my jaw dropped.  "I never want a replay of last night again. I'm getting you your car, so you do not have to be stuck like that again, alone or with the kids."  I nodded and climbed out of the car. The car lot was not your regular common US dealership. One look at the cars and I knew they would cost a fortune. I stepped closer to Lucas as a man, perhaps in his late 30's approached us.  The man who Lucas had referred to as Mason, greeted us with a big smile on his face, matching the commission he was sure to get from this sale. Lucas walked with him, as he gave instructions on what he wanted.  I followed closely, walking behind them, and my heart did a summersault at the figures I heard being thrown all about. Was he really going to spend such a fortune on a simple nanny? No, he had to be joking.  I walked to him, as Mason walked back inside to get some paperwork. "Are you serious about the car? You know I can't drive such an expensive car," my voice was a little over a whisper.  "Why?" he asked simply.  "I don't know because it costs a f*****g fortune," I retorted.  "I've made my choice, also I'm the one paying for it, so it shouldn't bother you." he shrugged.  "Is that supposed to make me feel better? Because it did the very opposite. Can we not just get a car from a used car lot?"  "You mean those trashed cars," he leaned into my ear, " no child of mine or nanny working for me will go out in a used car." "Okay, whatever, it's your money, not mine." I released a tired breath.  "Exactly. Any other girl would be thrilled,"  "My name is Christine not 'any other girl,'" I bit back angrily.  He wanted to say something else, but the salesman came back to us, requesting our attention. The pressure in my chest increased as another salesman brought the car around.  It had all the specifications I had heard Lucas give over their conversation. It was perfect for me and the kids to move around town on our own. Beautiful, sleek, definitely luxurious, and safe too. And it was in my favorite color, black.  "It's an SUV, Cadilac XTC. It fits all the features you ordered sir," Mason said to Lucas.  As much as I hated to admit it, a large part of me already loved the car, and my teeth boring into my bottom lip did nothing to hide that. "You like it," Lucas asked, but it was more of a statement.  "It does not mean I want it." I looked away shyly, " but yes I do like it."  Lucas let out a low chuckle, "Do you want to drive it?"  I nodded, and we took it for a test drive. My love for the car only deepened as we went on the drive, it was a smooth drive, everything about it was a soft touch. This car was a lot more than I needed or ever dreamt of and I found myself smiling by the time we got back.  "So, I take it it would no longer be a mortal sin if I buy this for you?" he teased.  "I didn't say it was a mortal sin," I said, biting back a grin. "but yeah, you can buy it." "You're not going to protest anymore?" he asked, almost disappointed.  "Is there any use, you will win anyways, plus I kinda like the car, so...yeah," I admitted with a sheepish smile.  "I must say I enjoyed your protests," he chuckled.  "Asshole," I muttered under my breath.  "What was that?"  "Thank you for the car."  Mason gave us some paperwork to sign, and soon enough, I was driving home in my new car, with Lucas behind me in his car, as we made our way back home.
