The drive home was quiet, and I could tell Lucas was a little sad that the kids were not coming home. He had not said a word since we left, and I was growing weary of the awkward silence between us.
"You know they are only going for one night, don't you?" I laughed nervously.
"I do, and I must say I'm a little relieved that mom insisted on taking care of them tonight," he gave a small smile.
"Then why are you so grumpy," I teased.
"I am?" he chuckled.
"Yup," I nodded, "you have that look you usually had the first time I came—oh God," my hand flew to my chest, "are you mad at me or something?"
"No," he said sharply, "no, no, no. I think it's more like the complete opposite." He pulled over, and I realized we were home.
"Oh, okay," I nodded and reached for my seatbelt.
He undid his too, and Bernard gave a small greeting before taking the keys to park the car properly. I held his jacket firmly around me as we walked to the house next to each other. To anyone, I was just trying to cover up from the breezy evening, but deep down, I knew the reason I was still holding on to the jacket. I could not help the sadness I felt at the thought that he was soon going to take it back. At least I could enjoy this before he did.
He pushed the door open and stepped to the side to usher me in first before coming in and closing the door.
"Are you not locking it yet?" I asked as we walked past the foyer.
"The guard will lock it," he said simply.
"There's a security guard?"
"Yup, I'm guessing you do not also know that the door locks automatically," we walked past the foyer into the main house.
I turned around to get a renewed view of the door. Suddenly the weird keypad and lock system made sense. "The guard has his post downstairs in the basement, and only you, I, and a few others know he's there. He sees when someone is coming in and opens the gate, and he sometimes answers the doors when there is a guest,"
"So he was the man speaking the day I got here," I said in realization.
"He was. Before he opens the door, he disables the security and puts back the codes once the doors close, in and out."
"But I've never seen him before," I scrunched up my face in confusion.
"That's why he's invincible," Lucas scarily widened his eyes, "I'm sure you must have heard those footsteps at night," his voice dropped to a whisper. "That's him."
My mouth hung in horror, and in my irrational mind, I was about to freak out at living in the same house as an invisible man, but his lips twitched, and he could not hold back the peal of laughter that erupted from him.
"You should see your face right now, you look like you just saw a ghost," he mocked between his laughter.
"Haha," I rolled my eyes, in mock annoyance, "that was very funny, you are such a jerk." I smacked his shoulder and chuckled.
"But really there is no invisible man right?" I said to make sure. I could not think of anything scarier for me, than that.
"No," he pinched the bridge of his nose as his laughter died down, "but I do pay him well enough for his discretion, the kids would freak out if they saw him."
"Okay, then I think it's good that way."
We stood in the living room opposite each other, eyes boring into each other's, both waiting for the other to look away first or say something.
"I should go to bed, it's been a long day," I said first finally giving up. At least that would save me from jumping into his arms, and making all my fantasies come true.
"It's still early," he looked at his Rolex wristwatch, and nodded, "just a few minutes till 9 pm. Stay a little more."
"I wish I could..." I paused thinking of an excuse.
"but?"
I realized I really did not have any excuse. The kids were away on a mini holiday, from the look of the shiny wooden floor, and fresh lemon smell of floor spray, I knew Emma had done a good job cleaning the house, and if I went back to my room now, I would have to force myself to sleep since I was not sleepy yet. And then the biggest reason I could think of was that I really did not want to leave him just yet.
"But nothing, I'll stay," I smiled.
"Perfect," he grinned, "would you like to look at the stars through my telescope?"
"You have a telescope?" I squeaked.
"It was a gift from Mia." he shrugged. "and you can get the best view from my room balcony,"
"Your room?" I asked, sensing a trap coming up.
He took my hand before I got the chance to rethink my choice. He led me upstairs through the elevator, down the hallways to his bedroom. He opened the door and let me inside first before coming in and locking the door.
Oh boy.
"Wait right here," he said and tossed his keys on the table. He walked to the large bookshelf in the corner, and a minute later, he emerged with the telescope. He grinned as he walked back to me carrying it.
"Ta-da," he said cheerfully.
"Oh wow," I gasped
"It's a little dusty, but it's still new," he wiped off some dust and laughed.
He lifted it, and I helped him hold the glass doors open to allow him to go into the balcony. I followed behind him and closed the door when we stepped in. Just like I guessed, it was a wide space facing the back yard, and I could not help but wonder how I never noticed it when the kids and I would play on the back lawn.
It took us one YouTube video and a few minutes to set it up in the right way. But it was so worthwhile when we did. He went back to the room, and a few minutes later, he came back with two glasses and a bottle of red wine.
"Should we be drinking while looking at the stars?" I teased.
"Who says we can't," he chuckled and dropped the glasses on the thick rail. I held them for him, while he popped the bottle open and filled them up.
"Well, do not blame me for my actions tonight," I laughed as I clinked my glass against his.
Lucas had a sheepish grin on his face, and his hand tugged his hair behind, "I'm sorry we took long to set this up," he dropped his wine on the rail, and went over to the telescope. "I have never really used this before."
"I thought your sister gave it to you," I dropped my wine too and took the jacket off the hung it on the rail next to my glass.
"She did, but she probably does not know I still have it," he gave a sad smile.
"Why?"
"Well she gave it to me on my 24th birthday, a few weeks before the twins were born," he said, and I did not miss the way his face changed into a frown as he tried to adjust the lens.
I remembered him say that Sarah had left the month the kids were born, and I suddenly understood why the telescope might have brought back bad memories.
"Hey," I placed a comforting arm on his shoulder, "we don't have to do this tonight if it only brings you bad memories," I said carefully. "Actually, we can just get drunk and continue playing twenty questions," I smiled.
That earned me a small laugh from him. He finished fixing up the lens and straightened. "I do not mean this in a wrong way Chris, but if I could get past the reminder your face gave me in those first few weeks, I sure can get past a telescope." he smiled and took my hand that was on his shoulder, "right now, your presence is doing more than enough to help me feel better,"
I gave a small smile, as I tried to comprehend for the hundredth time, why anyone in their right mind would leave this man. Maybe she was crazy because no one in their right mind would make such a bad choice.
"Why did she leave?"
It took me a second and the shocked expression on his face to realize I had said that out loud. s**t!
"I'm so so sorry. I did not mean to ask that out loud," I apologized.
He gave me a long look, and I half expected him to say something in a fit of rage, but instead, he smiled and turned back to the telescope. Then he said, "Not everyone can handle motherhood." he shrugged, "She was one of those people who could not handle it, and she was selfish enough to not give it at least one year's try, so she left."
"I'm so sorry Lucas," I whispered, coming closer to touch him.
"I told you before Chris, I do not want you to be sorry. There is no need to. If you want to know the truth, I'm happy she left because I have my twins with me, and now they have you, that is all that matters to me. And just in case I have not said this before, you are very important to me Chris."
My breath hitched up, as the words came out from his mouth. Did he just say that or did I imagine it? I must have had too much to drink or too little. Whichever it had to be too much of something or too little making me hear things now.
A million words floated in my brains, and I knew that if I said any, it would all just come out in a jumbled mess. So I picked up my glass and gulped the contents in one go before I could hear Lucas telling me to slow down.
It was a choice I regretted soon because the effects started to set in seconds. "It takes effect faster if you drink it too fast," Lucas chuckled.
"Oh," I said, feeling my skin fluster with heat.
"Are you okay?" he was at my side in a second, "You're flustered."
I was not drunk, I could still see and speak clearly, I could stand on my own too, but okay was not a word to describe the way I felt inside. But I just smiled and nodded. "We should look at the stars."
"We can see the moon from it too," he noted.
"That's just f*****g awesome," I gave a shrilled laugh that made Lucas laugh too. "Okay, maybe I'm not perfectly fine, but I still want to see this first before you dismiss me as drunk." I walked over to the telescope and lowered my head.
"How does this even work?" I asked.
He smiled and leaned over me to adjust the lens. Maybe it was the alcohol or the already intoxicating feeling of having his body pressing against mine, but I squirmed into him, brushing my ass against his groin.
A small groan escaped him when I wriggled my ass. His groan was all I needed to keep going. I pushed my head back and dropped it on his shoulder. "What are you doing Chris?" he asked, without looking away from the telescope.
"Even I do not know," I giggled, "you were right about the wine."
"Do you want us to go inside? We could do this tomorrow," he paused to look at me, and I shook my head. I was having way too much fun right here where I was.
"I'm done," he finally said, "come take a look,"
I was torn between disappointment and joy that he had fixed it, but I pushed myself off him anyways. He moved off me, and immediately, I missed the heat that radiated from his body on mine.
I looked into the lens and moved it a little until I saw a bright light that looked like a star, but it was not twinkling the way I would have expected. "I'm not sure this one is a star," I giggled.
"Let me take a look," He leaned back down, this time with his hand holding my waist. I moved my head to the side to give him a better view but made sure to stay within his hold.
"Yeah, that's not a star," he moved it around a little, then brought it to a stop and raised his head. "now you can take a look,"
He retracted his hand, but I held it back, "I think I'm more comfortable this way," I said in a soft tone. He nodded and tightened his grip on me.
"Yeah, this one looks more like it," I said when I looked through. "How can you tell the difference so well?"
"Um... it's not that hard to tell, but apart from that, I was very interested in astrology when I was a kid,"
"Really?" I said, moving the telescope around carefully.
"Yup, but my dad was solemnly against it, so I had to switch my interests," he laughed.
"I wanted to be a dancer when I was younger," I snickered as I remembered the incident that made me change my mind. "I just love the way their body flows to the rhythm of the music,"
"Why did you change your mind?" he asked, shifting closer.
"Celine and I saved for months to get into the show for kids that wanted to dance, and I went there after months of practice." I snickered, "In my mind, I felt like I was the best dancer, you should have seen me and Celine was cheering me on from the audience,"
"And what happened?" he asked, his voice was so intent like he could not wait to hear what came next.
"Well the other judges were nice enough to say dancing was not one of my many talents, but I believe one of them said it felt like watching an overweight elephant trying to jump in the mud,"
"Boy, that's harsh,"
I laughed and brushed it off, "After I watched the replay I could not agree more, although I think I still hate the man,"
That earned me a loud laugh from him, and I could not help the way it warmed my heart to hear his laugh. He dropped his hand for a minute, but only to take his wine, and I know I did not imagine the light brush of his bulging pants against my ass.
I spent the next few minutes searching the stars while we spoke, and as fun, as that was, my attention was completely divided. Do not get me wrong, looking at the stars was just a magical experience, but I dare anyone to try to focus on anything else with Lucas's large arms wrapped around their waist, and his c**k brushing against their ass and of course, a mind as filthy as mine, already imagining all sorts of possible scenarios of how that would turn out.
It was the perfect recipe for a disaster dessert because as much as I wanted to taste this dessert, I could not. Once again, the rational part of my brain won, and I found myself straightening, and pulling away from him.
But instead of releasing his grip on me, he only tightened his hand, and before I knew it, he was nuzzling my neck. "Lucas," I said softly, fighting hard not to tilt my head back to give him more access. "we have to stop,"
"Why?" he mumbled against my neck.
Yeah, why? Why could I not just let myself loose and enjoy this moment now that I had it?
Because I'm scared of what would happen if we take this too far, and what would happen after we both come to our senses.
"I'm just picking off from where you stopped," he said, as he continued to tread dangerously low to my shoulder. "And deep down you know you really do not want me to stop."
That part was very correct.
His other hand pushed down the sleeve of my dress to give him more room, and I bit my lip to hold back the moan that escaped when his lips brushed over the bare skin there.
"Lucas," I breathed, trying out my last chance at making a rational choice, but of course I made no effort to leave his grip.
"Tell me you don't want me as much as I want you, and I promise, I'll stop,"
I was quiet, unable to push the words past my lips because it was an undeniable fact that I wanted this a lot more than he could even imagine.
"That's what I thought," he said when I did not respond. His hand moved away from my waist for one precious moment, but only so he could spin me around to face him. I gasped as he pulled me closer, and my breast made contact with his sturdy chest, but I did not get enough time to process that or what came following after.
He kissed me.
