“Keep moving,” Lance barked. I hadn’t even realized I had stopped walking. May tugged me forward. By her expression, she was just as appalled as I was. We followed Lance down a long hall passing by several closed doors. Each of them had been locked from the outside. I could hear movement beyond them. Lance stopped at a door at the end of the hall and glanced over his shoulder at us. “Remember what I told you.” I puffed a slow breath out my puckered lips, reminding myself to appear strong and confident. Lance knocked on the door, slow and timid as if he were afraid of what lie on the other side. His hesitancy did nothing for my confidence. “Enter,” a deep and gravelly voice ordered. Lance opened the door barely wide enough for his head to get through. “I have our visitors with me.”
