Dr. Powers picked up a heavy metal mask from the cart and each thing she added to Roberta was more and more ominous. This face covering was moulded to fit Roberta’s features exactly and had latches along the sides, neck and top that would lock it securely to the back head rest. At the front it had a large round opening for her mouth and two smaller, glass covered ones for her eyes. On the inner side of the mouth hole was a short oval, rubber-covered pipe that protruded about an inch inward, complete with indentations for her gums and obviously designed to hold her jaws widely separated, no matter how much she might wish to close them. After telling Roberta to open wide again, Dr. Powers carefully fitted the full mask over her face, then clipped all of the latches tight so that it and the h
