Ramello
I'm still at the venue, unable to leave just yet, lingering on the pretense of tying up loose ends after the meeting. The hallway is nearly deserted now, except for the distant sounds of cleaners and the occasional aide passing through. My mind, however, is preoccupied with Julianna. Her strength, intelligence, and the subtle grace she exudes—it's compelling. I decide to seek her out, needing to see her just one more time before we part ways for the day.
I find her alone in a small anteroom, looking out of a window at the cityscape. The soft, low lights cast her profile in an ethereal glow, and the sight steals my breath for a moment.
"Julianna," I begin, my voice softer than I intend. She turns, and her smile lights up the room even more than the fading sunlight. Damn it! I cannot fall for her, but even as I try to convince myself, I feel as if I am already on that path.
"Senator, I thought you'd left," she says, her voice filled with a pleasant surprise that warms me.
"I almost did," I admit, stepping closer. "But I felt there was something unfinished about today."
She tilts her head slightly, curiosity in her eyes. "Unfinished?"
"Yes," I say, hesitating as I search for the right words. My heart races as I take another step closer, close enough to see the flecks of gold in her brown eyes.
"It's about what we shared today... the connection, the understanding. It's rare to find that with someone."
Julianna's gaze holds mine, intense and searching. The atmosphere between us crackles, while everything beyond this tranquil room dissolves into insignificance.
"Very rare," she whispers, her breath catching slightly as she speaks.
Without thinking, driven by a force I can't explain, I lean in closer, drawn by the magnetic pull of her presence. “I don’t know what it is about you, but I am intrigued and I am tired of resisting you. Tell me you don’t feel the pull that everyone has been speculating.”
“Ramello,” she whispers. “This is forbidden. We could lose everything.” She didn’t deny it. She feels it too.
“I know....I know. I’m sorry, I-” For the first time, I am speechless. Our eyes close, and the distance between us vanishes as our lips meet in a gentle, tentative kiss. I wasn’t sure if she initiated the kiss or if I subconsciously told myself to go for it, but the world stops spinning for a moment, the kiss deepening with a tender passion that surprises us both.
As we pull away, a stunned silence hangs between us. Her hand reaches up to touch her lips, her eyes wide with a mix of emotions.
"We... this can't happen," she murmurs, more to herself than to me. But her voice lacks conviction, her body language telling a different story.
"I know," I reply, my voice a low rasp, equally conflicted. "But it just did."
She nods, a slow, accepting movement. "So, now what?"
I take her hand, feeling the warmth and the promise of something forbidden yet undeniably real. "We tell no one. We keep this between us."
Julianna squeezes my hand in agreement, her resolve firming with a cautious yet hopeful smile. We leave the room separately, back into our public lives, carrying with us the secret of the unexpected kiss that has irrevocably changed everything. Our forbidden affair begins with a mix of caution and excitement, the secrecy adding an intense layer to every stolen moment we will manage to share.
It's early morning and I'm on the track, pushing through my usual laps, the rhythmic pounding of my feet on the pavement helping to clear my head. Ever since the kiss with Julianna, my mind has been a tumult of thoughts, each more confusing than the last. We haven’t spoken since that moment, and the silence between us feels like a growing chasm.
As I round the corner, I catch a glimpse of people playing and laughter from the nearby park. My steps involuntarily slow as I recognize Julianna and her daughter, Selah. Julianna tosses a frisbee, and Selah chases after it with youthful exuberance. The sight is so normal, so heartwarmingly domestic, it tugs at something deep inside me.
I debate whether to continue my run or stop. The pull is too strong; I find myself walking towards them, drawn by the desire to just be near Julianna again, despite the awkwardness that I know will follow.
"Julianna," I call out gently as I approach.
She turns, and the smile that lights her face falters slightly when she sees it's me. The air shifts, filled with a palpable tension. "Ramello," she responds, her voice cautious, a mask of politeness over the undercurrent of our last encounter.
I nod towards Selah, trying to ease the awkwardness. "You both look like you're having fun."
"We are," Julianna replies, her eyes flicking to Selah, then back to me, guarded.
Before more words can pass between us, Selah runs up, frisbee in hand, her energy breaking through the stiffness of our exchange. "Hi, Mr. Rhodes!
I kneel down to her level, smiling. "Hi Selah! It's nice to see you again. You’re pretty good with that frisbee."
Selah beams, proud and pleased. "Thank you! Mom and I come here a lot. She says it's good to stay active. She’s going to a masquerade ball soon. It's like a big party where everyone wears masks!" I knew about the masquerade ball, but I politely declined my invitation. Now, I'm reconsidering it. We have a press conference together anyway the day after the ball.
"A masquerade ball, huh? That sounds like a lot of fun," I say, the wheels in my mind turning as an idea forms. "Do you know what mask your mom will wear?"
Selah shakes her head. "It’s a secret! But she says it’s going to be really pretty."
I stand, offering Julianna a smile that I hope she'll understand doesn't push for more than she's willing to give right now. "A masquerade ball sounds amazing. I hope you have a fantastic time, Julianna."
Her eyes meet mine, a flicker of something undefinable passing between us. "Thank you, Ramello. We should get going, Selah. Say goodbye."
"Bye!" Selah waves, still holding the frisbee.
As they walk away, the idea cements itself in my mind. I'll go to that masquerade ball. . It's the perfect setting—a place where we can hide in plain sight, where the masks we wear might allow us to explore what's between us without the weight of our public personas. The risk is high, but the potential reward, the chance to connect with Julianna again, is worth it. I turn back to the track, my run now fueled by a new purpose.
