ADEMILADE My heart beat increased and my stomach twisted into knots. I stood rooted on the spot, appalled. "You pregnant?" I stared at her in utter disbelief. "Yes."She nodded her head, smiling. "But ...h-how is that possible?" I spoke with a pronounced stutter. "You told me you were on the pills right?" "I lied." she replied nonchalantly. "What?"my head snapped up and my body trembled with anger. "How could you! Do you know the implications of your actions?"I looked daggers at her. "Do you know what you have just done?" "I did nothing." She folded her arms across her chest and eyed me cautiously. "I wasn't the one who asked you to f**k me, was I?" "D*mn you." I cursed at her and ran up the stairs, dazed and confused. What the hell just happened? Did she really say that? I staggered through the passage into my room and was in time to hear my phone ring. Heaving a sigh, I dragged my feet to the bedside and reached for the phone to check out the caller and noticed it was my dad. Why is he calling? I wondered, receiving it. "Congratulations Ade." his baritone voice rang out through. Congratulations! For what? "Lily called to tell me the good news." For a heart -stopping moment, I thought I was dreaming. Lily! How did he know her?? "Do you know her?" I was forced to ask. "She is your mum friend right?" he questioned back. "Why didn't you tell me about her?"Do you think you can handle all this alone?" "What is your point sir?" I snapped at him as I was in no mood for his sermons, I was fighting the urge not to hang up on him. "Why are you so rude Ade?" he scolded. "Why are you ............" "Dad." I screamed out a warning telling him to stop. "Fine." He sighed deeply. "How then do you intend to handle the hospital and the........."he paused for a moment or two, and then took another deep breathe. "And the unborn child." "There is no such thing as that." I yelled in anger. So Lily is aware of her daughter's pregnancy, unbelievable!! "C,'mon Ade." My dad cooed. " it is not a big deal to have a child at your age. And moreover the girl in question is the daughter of your mom's best friend, Don't you think your mom would be happy wherever she is?" Hearing the word "mum" made my heart ache and I exhaled deeply, collapsing on the bed. Is this the reason why she appeared in my dream? "But I have a fiancee." my voice was barely audible. "A fiancee, not a wife." he stated "And what is that suppose to mean?" I retorted in a huff. "Nothing." he simply replied. "It should better be." I snarled and ended the call, tossing the phone on the bed. "Aargh! I buried my face in my hands and gave a full vent to the emptiness that I felt in my soul. "Are you alright man?"The sudden sound of Tobi's voice startled me. I raised my head slightly and saw him leaning against the door. "Hey."I managed a smile, too overwhelmed by my emotions to speak. He c****d his head on one side with a slight frown. "You crying?" "No I am....." "Don't dare lie to me?" He butted in and moved closer to me. "What is wrong with you?" He grabbed a stool and sat across from me. "Did that girl say something bad to you?" "What girl?" I feigned ignorance "The brown skinned girl." he stared at me intensely. "I saw you both talk in whispers. What exactly is going on?" I held his gaze, contemplating whether or not to tell him. "Demi." he brought me out of my thoughtful trance. "Fine" I sighed. "Her name is Emma and she is Lily's daughter. "Alright." He nodded slowly, his gaze not leaving my face for once. "I made a mistake with her, and now she claims to be pregnant with my child." "What?" He shrieked and leapt to his feet. "How could you Demi!Don't you know what a c****m is meant for, are you a novice in the game?" "I was drunk." I looked away from him to stare at the ground, trying to get myself under control. "I was not myself, the b***h took advantage of my drunken state." An awkward silence followed, which i fumbled with . How will I get out of this mess? I ran my hands through my hair. The thought of hurting Obianuju was driving me nuts. Gosh! I couldn't even think straight. "Have you told your fiancée about it?"Tobi finally broke the silence. "You want me tell her?" I looked at him in disbelief. "That is suicidal man." "It will be more suicidal if she finds out her self." he drawled. "Brace up man!"he patted my shoulder lightly. "I know it is a hard task, but that is the only way you can be free." "What if she breaks up with me?" I poured out my fears. "What if it gets worse?" "It won't." He assured me. "You just need to set things straight." The door opened suddenly and Obianuju walked in, carrying a large tray of food. "What is going on here?"She looked at me and then at Tobi. "Why are you both not in the party?" "Erm... I will be going now." Tobi chuckled nervously." He looked at me before he left the room. "And you...." She placed the tray on the stool in front of me. "Why are you still in your pyjamas?"She sat beside me on the bed. "Or do you want to be known as the dirty birthday boy?" She teased. I smiled affectionately at her and tweak her nose lightly. "I love you."My voice was raspy, rough and cracked. "I love you too." She returned the smile. "And ...Oh." her eyes popped open, as if she remembered something. "It is time to receive your birthday gift." She reached into her pocket for a small jewellery box and opened it. "Wow!"A spark of humor glimmered in my eyes as I stared at the silver necklace. "Where did you get it from?" "I had it made specially for you." She took out the necklace and clasped it around my neck. "Do you like it?" I stared down at the necklace, touching it and only then did I notice the tiny words engraved on it. "He stole my heart, so I am going to steal his last name." Wave of guilt swept over me. My heart began pounding, my mind swayed to and fro with conflicting emotions. I sprang up to my feet. "I will join you downstairs." I simply told her and walked into the bathroom. I just wanted to be alone, I needed a little time to think things over. * OBIANUJU I walked out of the room feeling dejected and heartbroken. The tears spilled fast and hot, but they weren't tears of anger or sorrow, they were tears of pain. Ademilade strange behaviour was enough to confirm my suspicions, confirm my fears. He was definitely hiding something from me, but what could that be??? I climbed down the short stairs into the crowded sitting room and collapsed on the sofa beside Funmi. "Awfar?" She looked around me. "Where is Ademilade." "In his room." I bit my lower lips and looked down at my hands. "Han Han!" She hissed loudly. "but I thought you went to call him na, or won't he cut his cake again?" "He is coming."I simply said. I couldn't bring myself telling her that my own fiancé indirectly sent me out of his room. "Obianuju right?" An American accented voice asked beside me. I quickly looked in the direction and saw a brown skinned girl, the same one who was talking and smiling with my fiancé. "Who are you?" I snarled at her. "Chill girlfriend." she laughed lightly. "I don't bite. I am Emma, a friend of Troy." Troy!! why is she addressing Demi by his English name? I looked her up and down. Maybe she is not beautiful. Maybe just I think that she is beautiful. No, she is really beautiful. There is no doubt about it. "It is nice meeting you." She stretched out her hand. "I don't know you." I ignored the hand shake and smirked instead. She smirked in return . "You will get to know soon." She nodded at me and began walking to the entrance, swaying her hips as she went. I followed her with my eyes till she was out of the house, then I looked away, meeting Tobi's blank gaze. "Who is she?" I had to shout so as to drown the loudness of the music blasting out from the home theatre. He didn't reply. He merely smiled and turned his head away from me. Like seriously! What is wrong with everyone?? * Emma. My heart bled with sadness as I drove back home. What did I just do?I felt so bad for Troy and his pretty girlfriend. Why did mum even insist I tell him "the good news"on his special day, can't she just wait till another day? I bit my lips to stop myself from crying, mum really hates it when I cry. I got to the mansion and drove through the open gate into the compound, pulling into the garage. Alighting, I slowly walked through the gardens into the sitting room and met my mum seated on the sofa with her legs crossed, her gaze fixed on the television. "I am back mum." I announced my presence. "How did it go?"She asked without looking at me, her gaze was still on the television. "I don't know." I replied truthfully. "What do you mean by that?" She turned her face to me. Seeing the anger in her eyes, I lowered my head and gazed at the floor. "He ..didn't ...seem happy ...with ...me."my voice cracked as I spoke. "Don't worry." She assured me. "I have it under my control." "Really?" I raised my head and looked at her. "How is that possible! I mean ... how..d-did you do it?" I stuttered nervously as her piercing gaze met mine. "Simple." She smiled lightly. "African parents have a huge influence on their kids, so I used his gold-digger father to get to him." She explained. "Just the mention of MacAdams hospital got him trembling at my feet." She threw her head back and laughed heartily. I managed to smile, but inwardly I was deeply hurt. Without a word, I ran up the long stairs and through the passage to my room. Entering, I kicked off my shoes and fell on the bed. The Tears came rolling down without ceasing and my heart started to break. "Dad please help me."I rasped and closed my eyes in an attempt to remember his face, but it was to no avail. I couldn't remember what he looked like, all I could remember was the black hefty man covered with his own blood. Oh God! I shuddered at the thought of it, it was a night mare to me. * Ademilade " It will be more suicidal if she finds out herself." Tobi's word replayed in my head. "Brace up man! I know it is a hard task, but that is the only way you can be free. And yes he was right! That is the only way I could free myself from this heavy guilt threatening to eat me up. I stood up then and looked at my messed up self in the mirror. "You can do it man." I braced myself for the worst and walked out of the room, through the passage, and into the sitting room. "At last!the celebrant is here." A female voice said, but it sounded so distant as I was looking around for Obianuju. I found her beside the kitchen, her hands on her waist as she talked in whispers to Funmi. Smiling lightly, I sauntered over to her. "Baby."I held her waist and pulled her close to me. "Demi." She turned around and smiled at me. "You finally came down." "Yes."I stroked her cheeks gently and leaned down, softly kissing her lips, fearing it would be the last. "Let's go outside" "Why?"her searching gaze ran over my face. "We need to talk." I said and walked ahead of her out of the house, and to the compound. "So......" She leaned against the car. "What do we need to talk about?" "It is about ......."my voice caught in my throat and I had to start again. "It is about the girl you saw with me." "Alright." She nodded her head slowly and I caught the fear in her eyes. "Uju." I attempted to hold her, but she slapped my hand away. "Continue."She said, growing suddenly pale. "We had a one night stand and she .......and she...." I tried again to say more, but the words froze in my throat; I could feel them strangling me from within. "She is pregnant." She completed, her voice surprisingly calm. "No, she claims to be pregnant."I corrected. "And what difference does it make?" She bit her quavering lips and began to cry. "No, tell me. What ...have I ......done to deserve this hurt?" She spoke with difficulty. "Is ....this ....the punishment... for ....my mistake?" "No." I shook my head vigorously. "I never meant to hurt you, I only meant to love you. What happened with her was a mistake and I promise to fix things up." I begged desperately and earnestly. "I will not disappoint you........." Gosh! What am I even saying? Haven't I disappointed her enough? "What will happen to us now?" There was a tinge of coldness in in her voice. "Nothing." I sharply replied. "And the unborn baby?" Her question caught me off guard. I was not expecting her to ask me this! "Erm.... I ... will .... erm...."I stuttered, not knowing what to say, I felt so foolish Her lips curved in a light smile and she took off the engagement ring. "I don't want to be your second option." she tucked the ring into my pocket. "I am done with this relationship."she shoved me out of the way and ran into the house, crying. I stared after her, too dumbstruck to utter a word. She didn't just break the engagement, she broke me too. TBC. Like, comment and invite a friend. Happy Sunday!?
