Prologue
Conan’s pov
“If you miss this then Aunt is going to kill you,” Bella said, and I looked at her.
“You know I have a lot to do. Dad has given me more responsibilities and I want to prove to him that I can take care of the business,” I said, and she frowned.
“And because of that, you are going to stop living? You are 23 years old Conan. You can’t be a workaholic like dad,” Bella said.
I watched how she frowned and then sighed.
I know that look, it was the look our mother always made when our father missed something important because he was busy.
I vowed then that I would never be like him that, I wouldn’t miss all those important things.
I vowed then that my family would come first, and Aunt basically raised us.
“Fine, let’s go,” I said and took my jacket, and we went to the car.
“Jenna called me again, she was asking if I could ask you to go out on a date with her,” Bella said, and I shook my head.
“Tell your friend that it isn’t happening,” I said, and she nodded.
“I did tell her, but she just doesn’t understand. She thinks that I don’t tell you,” Bella explained.
Jenna is my little sister’s best friend; she has had a crush on me for years now.
I am aware of her little crush but never really paid much attention to her.
She is just the girl who came to have sleepovers in our house and nothing else.
I have never seen her in a romantic light ever and she is kind of spoilt.
Growing up in a rich family, Jenna has gotten used to getting everything she has always wanted.
She is just not my type, maybe I sound like a hopeless romantic but when I find her I will know.
I just have a feeling that when I meet the love of my life I will know that she is the one.
We got to the inauguration of the new wing of the hospital, and I went straight to my aunt.
“You are here,” she said as she hugged me.
“Yes I am here,” I said and then looked around the place.
“It’s beautiful, but where are the kids? They are the main attraction of this whole thing. Shouldn’t they be here?” I asked looking around.
“Well, I arranged for a few programs for the kids. You can walk around, and you will see what I am talking about,” she said, and I nodded.
I walked around and I could see kids running around.
I have never thought of having kids of my own, but they somehow bring me some joy.
I walked around and saw what my aunt was talking about.
In different rooms, there were different entertainments arranged for the kids.
They were singing in some rooms, cooking in others, and listening to stories in other rooms.
The guests and investors were also standing there and watching.
I continued walking and found myself stopping in front of a room.
The class seemed really serious, and everyone was concentrating, unlike the other rooms.
There was chatter and all that, but it was kind of organized and not like the others.
In the other rooms you could tell that the people couldn’t handle kids hence the chaos.
“Lady, what color should we use?” a girl asked raising her hands.
I turned to look at the lady she was talking about, and she turned to the kid.
“What is your favorite color?” the lady asked her.
“Blue,” the girl answered, and the lady nodded with a smile.
“Then use a blue paint,” she answered, and the girl chuckled.
“What? But trees are green and not blue,” the girl said, and the rest of the kids laughed as well.
“You are so old, and you don’t know that trees are green and not blue?” one boy asked her.
I watched as the lady chuckled as well at this.
“I am not that old, I am only 22 years old,” she said, and the kids gasped.
“Wow, you are so old. Have you seen dinosaurs?” one of the kids asked.
I heard her chuckle at this and then looked at them.
“I am not that old, and yes there are blue trees,” she said and then chuckled again.
“Really?” the kids asked her, and she nodded.
“Trees have all kinds of colors, some are yellow, and some are pink as well,” she explained to them.
“Really? so I can paint my tree purple?” another kid asked her.
“Yes,” the lady said and then smiled. I stood there as they were finishing up their paintings.
“Is everyone done?” she asked them, and they all agreed and started showing her.
From where I was standing I could see how bad the paintings were, but she praised them.
She loved every single one of them and had something nice to say.
“Lady, now what do we do about the leftover paint?” another kid asked her.
“Where is the leftover paint?” she asked, and the kids started bringing them to her.
I watched as she took a little of the paint and then smeared it on their noses.
This caused the students to want to do the same, but she wouldn’t let them.
They started chasing her around the room and I found myself smiling while looking at this.
I watched as she was running towards the entrance where I was standing.
She didn’t notice me because she was busy looking behind her.
Well, I could move but I don’t want to move.
So, I stood there, and she bumped into me and then smeared me with paint in the process.
She looked up at me, I watched how she bit her lower lip as she looked at me.
“I am so sorry. I didn’t notice you,” she said and looked behind her.
“Kids, please stop for a second,” she said, and they all nodded and then stopped.
She looked at me again and now I could see those green eyes from up close.
Her blond hair which was in a messy bun was now hanging loose and covered in paint.
“Again sir, I am really sorry. I stained your shirt, didn’t I? Take it off and I will take it to the dry cleaners,” she said unbuttoning my shirt.
I stopped her hands by holding them and that’s when she looked at me again.
“You also stained my pants. Will you also help me take them off?” I asked her.
She looked down to look at my pants and when she realized her mistake she looked up at me.
Her face was now completely red.
“I am sorry,” she said, and I looked at the kids and then nodded.
“How will you fix this mess?” I asked all serious and watched how she started to panic.
She took out a card, “this is my card. You can call me, and I will have the clothes dry-cleaned,” she said.
“No, that won’t do,” I said, and I watched how her face changed.
She went from being completely sorry to being completely pissed off.
“Then what the hell do you want? I am offering you a solution here and yet you are busy acting like a jerk,” she said and then covered her mouth.
She turned to look at the kids with a frown realizing that she made a mistake cursing in front of them.
“I mean kind sir, what should I do to make up for my mistake?” she asked me.
But I could still see the fire in her eyes even though she was smiling.
“Okay then, how about you buy me a cup of coffee?” I asked her and she seemed confused but nodded.
I watched as she reached into her pocket and then took out some money.
“Here you go, I need to get going,” she said and turned to the kids.
“See you guys later,” she said looking at her watch and running.
I just stood there and watched as she was walking away.
I handed my bodyguard the card, “find out everything about her,” I said, and he took the card.
I went straight home after that, and Frank handed me a file.
I looked at it, well I knew that her name was Emma Cooper.
Turns out she is an orphan, according to this, it says that her parents died in a car crash.
Emma Cooper, I looked at the photo and I couldn’t help but smile.
She is the one, I liked how the kids respected her and she knew when to be serious with them and when to be playful.
I can see myself having kids with her, and it does help but she is drop-dead gorgeous.
Now Emma Cooper, how do I woo you into going out with me?
