Prologue
*Your Girlfriend is carrying my child *
Prologue
Raynette stared at the last message she had sent her boyfriend- or should she in this case call him ex-boyfriend as she had broken up with him through a text three days ago.
6 words she could have sworn would never come out of her mouth to Sora yet she sent them to him through a text because she was too embarrassed to call him or even speak to him through the magic mirror.
'I'm getting married, let's break up'
Raynette wondered what would have gone through Sora's mind upon seeing the message she was sure had read the message but he hasn't replied even though three days had passed
She wasn't quite sure how and what to feel regarding this.
Should she feel relieved that he didn't reply and take it as a sign that he accepted to break up? Knowing Sora he would have driven three hours down to her place and demanded an explanation and yet nothing from him.
Raynette wasn't sure if she had the right to feel disappointed that not even once in three days to ask had he called her, texted her, or appeared in the magic mirror to ask her what she meant by she was getting married
They had plans mapped out for their anniversary, they were to travel to Japan together for the break as Sora was half Japanese and wanted to explore that side of him while she was interested in the Otaku culture they even had a list written out
- Buy couple clothing
- Go to the Anime festival together
- Try Japanese street food
- Find Sora's relative
She couldn't forget that Sora was still trying to convince her to even get matching tattoos with him and yet, despite being this serious he seemed unbothered that she suddenly texted him she was getting married
Raynette looked up at the mirror in front of her as she fought the tears that were sitting at the back of her throat, she would hate to ruin the thousand-dollar bridal makeup she had on.
'I should call him' she thought to herself
She was getting married in less than 10 minutes to Zayn Wright.
God!
If someone had told her this a year ago, she would have laughed so hard and maybe punch the person in the face but here she was, sitting in this vintage white wedding dress that cost more money than her college tuition, waiting to say 'I do' to Zayn Wright.
Her wedding dress could have been made for royalty. Her parents had made sure she got the best of the best not because they thought she deserved it no of course not but because they wanted to parade her like some sort of trophy to the rest of the Roosevelt to show them that they got their daughter to marry into the second largest conglomerate family in all of the kingdom.
Raynette felt that she was nothing to them than a means to an end - she was the daughter they didn't mind selling just to secure the safety of the family business, a business that she would never get to participate in because she was not even their biological daughter
A fake Roosevelt
The Roosevelt family on the tabloid is always portrayed as the perfect, loving extended family who owned multiple businesses and loved each other but in reality, they were nothing but backstabbing, child selling family and she was the evidence of all this.
Raynette looked down on the heavy yet expensive vintage dress and thought 'What a waste of effort for one day '
The dress on her body was like a handcuff, stealing all the freedom she could ever have.
Her phone vibrates, bringing her from thoughts, she grabs the device with the thought Sora might be calling but it turns out it was nothing but a spam message
She felt the urge to smash the phone on the floor or maybe fling the useless thing out the window, anything to release the anger inside of her
Was he really not curious as to why she broke up with him so suddenly? Did she mean so little to him that he would just let her go like that?
Raynette takes one deep breath and dialed his number. She puts the phone on speaker and listens to the metallic ring as the call tries to connect. Her heart was pounded in her chest as she placed the device on the dresser.
"Pick up ... please "
It has been raining all day but the heat from the dress is already getting to her, even with the window open. She starts to focus on what she could see from outside the window, the raindrops dropping over the metal rails, a cacophony of wet thuds, and the humid yet stable air - anything but the metallic ring
"He didn't answer," she said to herself as the operator recited 'the number you're trying to call is not reachable, press 1 to leave a voicemail'
Raynette doesn't get enough time to gather the unidentified emotions running through her when the door slides open and her mother walks in
Elizabeth Roosevelt
"Oh my goodness, you look beautiful" her mother exclaims as if she had never seen her in this dress before. Just yesterday she accompanied Raynette for a fitting, calling the dress the perfect Cinderella-Princess dress saying it's a dream dress for a dream day with her own Prince Charming but she didn't want a Prince Charming "You look like a Wright"
Raynette scoffs
A Wright?
Believe her she has nothing against Zayn Wright, he was just a sweet, smart, sometimes weird but nice guy. Any woman would be lucky to marry him - any woman but her
She wanted Sora
Her mother grabs her arm with a smile "You're not going to regret this, you're saving the family and I am so proud of you for coming to this decision"
"You mean the decision you and dad made behind my back. I had to hear about my own wedding from a stranger"
"Raynette" her mother called with a stern voice, "we talked about this."
"Did we? Because I remember saying I do not want to do this" Raynette starts a fight with Elizabeth knowing that she would indeed lose, she thought what could she lose by trying to fight one last time?
Raynette didn't have the strength to save herself. The Roosevelt owns her, she was their property, their daughter to be used as they wished and it was all her fault that she didn't live for herself, she wrote a blood contract to be owned by the Roosevelt when she was 12, at that time all she wanted was to be rescued from that horrid orphanage but little did she know they would ask her to do this
"Raynette" her mother called again this time with a harsher tone "Would you later get married to that delinquent instead? A son of nobody?"
"I am a daughter of nobody, I think we fit each other quite well."
Her mother raised her hands as if to slap her but held them in the air, she takes a deep breath "You're a Roosevelt and you deserve to be with the best. Period"
"But I would not be happy with Zayn Wright" she raised her voice "I tried to force myself to like him but I don't feel happy when I'm with him - I don't love him"
"Love" Her mother boast into laughter, mocking her and everything she stood for "This love you think you feel for that tattooed delinquent is a result of hormones, real love, and true happiness comes from power, money, and marrying into the right family"
"I don't want any of that. I just want to love freely "
"Listen, girl, I have seen too many stories where a girl ruins her perfect life and dies because of love. Love makes people weak. I've been watching you since you were 12 and I've had great plans for you. Don't ruin it because of fleeting teenage love. If love could last forever, everyone would be married to their first love. Think about it Raynette. Do you want to be married into the most powerful conglomerate family or to a tattooed boy who will only be with you till he finds another thing with a skirt attractive?"
"I cannot live without Sora"
"Child" mother stood in front of me "That boy is not associated with any vital part of your body, he is not your head nor your heart. You were fine before him, you'll be fine after him. Now wipe those tears and put on the biggest smile you can muster. You are about to marry Zayn Wright" her mother said handing over a handkerchief to her "I'll go get the make-up artist to come to touch you up" she said and headed out of the room
Raynette felt her leg weak as she lost the battle against her mother, she fell into the wicker chair, her mouth quivering
So this was it
At 19 her life was over, she was to marry Zayn even though she loved another
Raynette hears the door open as another second tick by, and someone comes rushing but this time she didn't bother to turn to look at it, knowing that it was her mother.
"You look hideous In that dress" she heard a voice that sounded nothing like her mother's.
Raynette turned her head quickly and saw that it was not her mother but her boyfriend- ex-boyfriend. "Sora" she called
Raynette could not believe that he was truly here, she grabs the edges of the dress and stood up as thousands of questions went through her mind.
"How are you here? You can't be here, if my mom finds out she'll" she rants as he walks towards her until he pulls her into his embrace
"I'm sorry," he said as he buries his face in the crook of her neck, his hair wet. He must have been running in the rain, she knew this and knew what he must have done to get her but she couldn't bring herself to hold onto him
For the last three days, Raynette had imagined meeting him over and over again but she never thought that he would be the one to say 'I'm sorry she should be the one apologizing for breaking their promise, for not having enough strength to stay with him, she should be the one asking for forgiveness not him
"I missed you," he said as he tighten his hands around her "I can't live without you, don't say it's over between us" his voice breaks "Please"
"Y-you shouldn't be here" she pulls him and stares at his face. "If my parent finds out you're here, they could hurt you "
"I am not leaving without you"
"You have to go" she pleads as she tried to push him but he doesn't bulge
"Is it true?" Sora asked
"What is?"
"Are you pregnant?"
Raynette gasped shocked, how did he know? She didn't tell anyone about the test result, the only person who knew was her best friend Gemma and -
"Gemma told you, didn't she?"
"Of course, she told me, were you never going to tell me? We're you going to marry that bastard even though you are pregnant for me?"
"Who said the baby was yours?" A voice came from behind them and they turned to see Zayn Wright walking toward them, he held a facial expression that she couldn't decipher
"Zayn"
"I knew it. My guts told me that you'll come and ruin everything" Zayn spoke in a rather cool voice, he was never the one to shout anyways
"She doesn't love you," Sora said to him and pulls Raynette to his side "it would be wrong for you to marry a woman who doesn't love you"
Zayn stares at Sora and then at me "I don't need her to love me" he said "I need her to raise my child - our child"
"What do you mean? Raynette what is this bastard talking about?" Sora turns to me
"Oh, she didn't tell you? Your girlfriend is carrying my child"
