Prologue
Prologue   “Are you sure you are coming home?” His arms were crossed in front of him as he looked at me. “I can’t miss my best friend’s wedding,” sagot ko bago nagpatuloy sa pag-iimpake. “Will you come with us?” tanong ko sa kaniya nang matapos ako sa pag-impake.   Tumango siya. “I’ll book my flight later. I nodded back at him with a smile before I continued walking.   “Mommy!” I heard my son called. “Lucas is annoying!” Landon said as he pointed at his brother.   Mabilis kong hinawakan ang kamay niya at ibinaba. “Hey, don’t do that,” saway ko sa anak ko. “And don’t call your brother annoying, please. It’s not good for the ears,”   “But he is annoying,” Landon emphasized. I turned to Lucas. “Lucas, anak, please minimize the teasing. You two just play. I am cooking our dinner and I can’t do it if you two keep on fighting,”   Tumango lang si Lucas pero kitang-kita pa rin ang pang-aasar sa mukha niya. “Okay, Mommy,” aniya.   I narrowed my eyes at him and gave him a knowing look. “Promise?” tanong ko sa kaniya.   He pouted. He pouted because when he says promise, he have to keep his word. That’s how I raised them. They need to keep a promise no matter how big or small it it.   Lucas nodded but did not say anything. Nakanguso pa din siya. “Say it, baby,” pilit ko sa kaniya.   Napatingin siya sa akin. “Promise,” he said as the amusement in his eyes were gone. They almost have the same features. While Landon, pareho kaming mahiyain at hindi masyadong nagsasalita. Aside sa ugali, Landon got his lips from me. Just continue your cooking,”   Tumango ako at nagpasalamat. Andrew ate with us that night. “Mommy, where are we going?” tanong ni Landon na lumapit sa akin. “We are going to the Philippines, baby,” sagot ko sa anak ko at ngumit.   His eyebrows furrowed. “Phil- what?” naguguluhang tanong niya.   Ngumiti ako sa kaniya. “Philippines, baby. It’s the place where Mommy was born,” I told my son as I held his cheek.   Lumapit naman si Lucas. “Yay! Philippines! Mommy, that’s where our Dad lives, right?” tanong ng anak ko na nagpagulat sa akin. “We have a Daddy?” inosenteng tanong noong isang anak ko.   I held both of Lucas’s hands. “Where did you learn that?” mahinahong tanong ko sa kaniya kahit na kinakabahan ako. “It was from Ninang Hillary,” he answered as he smiled at me. “I asked him about my Dad because you haven’t mentioned anything to us about it. Ninang Hilarry told me that our Dad is in the Philippines right now,”   Gusto kong tampalin ang noo ko. Gusto ko ring kalbuhin si Hilarry ngayon. Pero pinigilan ko ang sarili ko. I tried to calm myself as I talked to my son.   “Lucas, listen to me, okay?” I told my son with a forced smile. Tumango naman ang anak ko. “You don’t have a Dad,”   Nakita ko kung paanong bumagsak ang mga mata ng anak ko. He looked so sad. “Why is that?” Lucas asked as he looked at me with teary eyes. “Why do my friends have Daddies? Why do Landon and I don’t have one?”   “You just don’t have a Dad. That’s all,” simpleng sabi ko sa kanila. “I’m so sorry if your Ninang Hillary told you something that is not true. I’ll talk to her about it,”   Tumango si Lucas at Landon bago tahimik na tumalikod sa akin. They sat on the floor and just played with their toys. I am working as a tutor here. “Yeah, I’ll be in the Philippines for a month or two, Mrs. Clarkson,” I told the woman on the line. “I’ll let you know when I’m already back, okay?”   “Okay. You take care, Liz!” Mrs. Clarkson said. “We’ll miss you and the twins!”   I chuckled. “We’ll miss you, too, Mrs. Clarkson. Just tell David about my trip to the Philippines, okay?”   “Will do, Liz. Thank you. Bye!” Mrs. Clarkson said. I called Hillary after that. “Sorry, Liz!” she apologized sincerely. Hillary rolled her eyes at me. I tried, alright. I tried dating other guys pero hindi ko talaga kaya. I haven’t loved anyone like I loved their father. I hugged my sons who were sleeping beside me.   I kissed their forehead. “I love you, both,” I whispered as I closed my eyes.   The next day, maaga kaming nagising dahil maaga ang flight namin. “Are you ready to go home?” Andrew asked as he turned to me. I nodded at him. “I am,” I said firmly to convince him. But my mind flew to everything that I have left when I went away. My friends… my mother’s grave… and him.   Logan Greyson Gonzales… will I ever see you there?
