Chapter 4: Talking

876 Words
Jeremy insisted on buying me water. I tried to decline, but we wouldn't give up, and besides, it’s warm outside, I’m thirsty and I should drink wanted. I just didn’t want him to buy me water. So right now, I'm sitting here, by the pool bar, sipping my water and looking suspiciously at Jeremy. I tried to buy fries because I’m kind of hungry, but Jeremy wouldn’t let me, he bought them instead with a big bottle of water. I’m perfectly capable to buy myself fries and water. But he insisted and I didn’t have the energy to argue. I eat my fries with mayonnaise. It's super good, better than ketchup. I eat in silence; I don’t think I have to talk to Jeremy just because he bought me fries and water. Jeremy looks at me while I eat some fries. I don’t like it, I hate when people look at me. "Why are you looking at me?" I ask uncomfortable. "No reason angry girl", he says. I roll my eyes and he chuckle. God this boy is really getting on my nerves. "Whatever", I mumble. "So, you say your name is Kayleigh Martin", Jeremy says and steal one of my fries. "Yeah and?" I ask and smack his hand away when he tries to get another. "Ow", he laughs. "And who is Kayleigh Martin?" "Are you getting too much sun maybe?" I snap. “You are very weird”. "Oh no, this is me, trying to get to know you", Jeremy says. "A complete stranger who I don't know, I'm trying to get to know, and if I'm going to do that, I'm going to need your help with it". I try my hardest not to laugh. I'm supposed to not like this guy, because I don't know him. And yet, he is pretty funny, and I want to laugh, but I won't let myself do that. There is something about him that interest me. I have to admit that at least. "Okay guess who I am", I say. "Five things". Jeremy raises his eyebrow. "Okay... You are a girl, your name is Kayleigh, your hair is dark, you have beautiful eyes and a perfect none-smile", he says. Okay now I don't know if he's just mocking me or not. I sigh. Jeremy laughs. "How could I possibly know anything about you when we met a day ago?" He asks. "And that's the thing", I say. "We did meet a day ago, which is why I am not going to tell you anything about myself because that's not what I do, hell I don't even tell people I do know about myself, except my sister, Lacey and Kenna". "Aha!" Jeremy says winning. "Now I know you have a sister! One step closer already!" I... Ugh damn! He's very sneaky! Sneaky people can be tricky, you have to carefully watch what you say, otherwise they can figure out a whole lot. "What's her name?" He asks. "Oh no, I'm not telling you sneaky fox", I hiss. "Oooo so now I'm a fox?" He asks liking. I sigh again. Has this guy been taking something or what? "Are you on something?" I ask. "No, I'm just generally happy now when I'm 1000 miles or I hope much more, away from home", he says. Well that sounded weird. Why would he be this happy to be away from home. This guy is a mystery. "Huh?" Suddenly he looks alarmed and his happy face disappears. Now he's face is straight and focused. "Oh nothing, just forget it", he says. "How's the fries?" I raise my eyebrow. "They're fine", I say. But I don't think he is. I can see that he feels like he said too much, something about what he said is troubling him, but he’s trying hard not to show it. I sigh. “Look, it’s not my intention to be so rude, I just have a very hard time talking about myself to people I don’t know and who doesn’t know me, I’m a very reserved person, and I even have a hard time talking to people who do know me”. Jeremy looks at me with a very serious expression on his face. “I understand”, he says. “I’m not the best at talking about myself either, but I try to”. It’s easier for some people, harder for others, I guess. But I don’t feel like I want to change or try to change. I just feel like my life is other people’s business. “I try to be a little less complicated I just don’t really want to you know”, I say. This makes Jeremy start to laugh. It did sound a bit funny, I can admit that, but that’s about all I’m willing to admit right now. Jeremy is about to say something but gets interrupted so can’t know what he wanted to say. "Kayleigh!" I hear Lacey shout. "Jeremy!" A boy shouts. Lacey and Theo. I turn around and see them running toward us. "Come on don't hide here!" Lacey says, takes my hand and drags me off the chair. I grab my water bottle the second before Lacey drags me away running.
