Ava 3

1023 Words
Tyler and his brother Caleb left about twenty minutes ago and I am still in the kitchen helping sharply with dinner. She now has me setting the table. Whatever she is cooking smells amazing.  "Where is my granddaughter?" I heard my grandpa say. I set down the silverware and ran toward la the direction of his voice.  "Grandpa," I said as I ran into his arms.  He gave me a big bear-like hug and kissed my forehead. "I'm so happy you are here honey "  "I'm happy to be here."  We pulled apart and I studied his face. He looks the same to me except his hair is whiter and he has a long white beard. He reminds me of Santa but he is missing the belly. "Sorry I was unable to get you."  "It's okay. Caleb was very nice." " he didn't try anything with you?" I chuckled and shook my head. "No grandpa, he was a perfect gentleman. He took me to lunch and then brought me straight here "  "Jim you need to have more faith in my boys," Sheryl said as she pulled a roast from the oven.  "Your sons tend to change out girls like they do underwear." He said with a straight face.  "They will settle down eventually."  "As long as they don't hurt my baby girl we will be fine."  "They wouldn't dream of it, Jim. Plus I don't think your grandbaby has her heart set on anything. When Tyler made a comment she set him straight "  "Oh, and do tell what did he say?"  "He was rambling on about he is not in the market for a wife and not to get my heart set on him. I told him I was not interested in love life. Don't worry grandpa you have nothing to worry about."  He kissed my head and looked at me. "Good, I'm happy I don't have to worry about you."  "Jim go wash up, dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes," Sheryl said.  "Okay. I'll be back honey."  "Ok grandpa see you soon." I watched my grandpa walk out of the house and I finally felt like I belonged somewhere.  "He has been so excited about you coming here."  "That makes me happy to hear."  "Alright honey come help me set the table."  Sheryl and I set the table and when it was done she rang a bell. "What is the bell for?" I asked as we sat down.  "It's for the men to let them know dinner is done and it's time to eat "  Before I could say anything three men walked in followed by my grandpa. Each man sat down and my grandpa sat next to me.  "This looks great mama," one of the guys said. He was a younger spitting image of Tyler. "Thank you, Levi. Drew love will you please say grace?" Sheryl said while she looked lovingly at her husband.  I watched as everyone bowed their head and closed their eyes and I did the same. "Dear Lord we give thanks for this meal, for the hands that prepared it, and for the nourishment, it is about to give us. I also would like to ask that you watch and help Tyler heal. May he return home safe and sound with his brother. I also want to say thanks for Ava's safe trip here. Thank you, Lord Amen." (Quick note: This prayer is similar to the prayers my family would have. I know some of you are not religious while others practicing different things. I do not mean to offend anyone but this part of how this family is.)  After the prayer was said the dishes began to get passed around. I had placed pot roast, mashed potatoes, carrots, bread, and even a mixed vegetable on my plate. My dad and stepmom cooked but nothing like this. On a regular school night, we would either eat out or have something quick and easy. My stepmom's favorite dishes were salmon with kidney beans and rice or she would do rice with kidney beans, ketchup, and sausage. (P.s the last one is my favorite one.) While my father loved making baked mac n cheese or egg fried sandwiches. (I hate egg fried sandwiches)  I decided to try the pot roast first and the moment it hit my mouth I moaned. The meat was so flavorful and just melts in your mouth and once I was done moaning I heard a fork fall onto a plate. I opened my eyes and Levi was looking at me with a heated stare.  I looked away from him. "Sheryl this roast is amazing. I would love to learn how you made it." She smiled at me "of course dear. You're more than welcome to help me around the house or the guys can teach you about farming." My grandfather cleared his throat and I looked at him, "I would prefer it if you stuck around here for now and helped Sheryl out, then I can take you out when we are less busy. "  I liked his idea, "that sounds great. What time should I be here?"  "Oh okay. I guess I better hurry up and eat." I said as I began to eat faster.  "Why?" Levi asked.  I put my fork down and looked at him, "because I need to be up early. I normally go to bed at seven pm but since I need to be up earlier I need to go to bed at five-thirty." "You need ten to ten and half hours of sleep?" He asked.  "Of course I do. If I do not get enough sleep I turn into the wicked witch of the West. And trust me you do not want to see me without proper rest." And I began to eat again.  When everyone was done eating I helped Sheryl clean up and then said good night to everyone. It took grandpa and me three minutes to get to his home. He showed me my room and after I unpacked I went and showers. After I dress I laid down and fell asleep.
