Mr. Vanderfeld laughed.
“If you are thinking of our deal, Duke, everything should be signed and sealed within the next few days.”
They drove back the same way they had come and the Duke explained to Mr. Vanderfeld some of the unusual objects to be found on his estate and made it clear how well it was all organised.
“I shall be waiting for you to come to Texas, Duke,” Mr. Vanderfeld said. “Then I can show you how I manage on a very larger amount of land than you own here.”
“I am sure I will find it most interesting,” the Duke replied in a voice that told Helga it was the last thing he was likely to do.
Mr. Vanderfeld was pleased and, when they went back to the house, he showed a new enthusiasm for inspecting the furniture in the house and seeing the pictures.
