‘ your highnesses, this way. ’ The guard said as be led the way to safety.
‘ I don't get it, why are we running. We can fight and we are extremely good at it and don't get me started on the fact that I am running. From a fight. I will never live this down if my brothers hear about it. ’ Mo complained as she ran along with Keats.
‘ you are not fighting where I am, you know that and although I understand the king reasoning. The only thing that is preventing me from going back is the king commands. ’
‘ the king and queen are joining us as soon as the coast is clear. ’ the guard said as he turned back to look at them at the same time, a mage appeared in front of the guard and before Mo and Keats could cry out a warning. The guard head was severed from his body.
‘ oh no. ' Mo muttered as they became surrounded with mages appearing out of thin air.
‘ they breached the castle defences. That's impossible. The only way it is possible is if... ’.
‘ there is a traitor within us. ’ Keats gritted out.
‘ do you surrender? ’ the first mage who killed the soldier asks.
‘ you know we won't. Why ask. ’ Mo said with an eye roll.
The mages all rushed to attack them and Keats use his strength to fight off his while Moira kept stealing their magic and using it against them. Then Keats made a terrible mistake. He threw a mage to the ground then went for another without checking if the mage was still alive. The mage got up and drew out a thin blade without a whisper of sound and wanted to use it to strike Moira.
‘ watch out. ' A new voice yelled neared them and Mo turned but was too surprise to do anything as the king pushed her out of the way and the blade struck him instead.
‘ Stephen. ’ the queen and Moira shouted at the same time while Keats let out a roar that shook the castle foundations and snapped the neck of the mage in his hand as he moved to the one that struck the king who was smiling, then started punching him but the skin just melted off the man as he started laughing.
‘ Keats. Honey look at me, look at me. ' Mo said in a soothing tone as Keats started growling and looking around for more mages. ‘ they all left. They left as soon as you let out a roar. It will be alright. ’ Mo said as she ran her hands down his back and held his face to her neck as they both sank to the floor.
‘ Stephen. Stephen. Please don't leave me. ’ the queen cried as she held onto her mates body not caring about the blood staining her as she wailed with tears pouring down her face.
‘ take good care of our child and his mate. Becca. I did my part. Now do yours. I love y- you. ' the king struggled out before he lose all strength to hold on and gave up to ghost.
‘ Stephen. Stephen. ’ the queen yelled as she started sobbing hysterically. ‘ don't leave me Stephen. ’ she. Whispers as she lay her head down on her husband chest and Mo watched as the light left the queen eyes as the shifters who had started arriving all went on their knees and bowed their heads.
‘ Keats. Take one last look at what those mages did to your father. ’ the Queen said with a voice so powerful that Keats head whipped to look at her direction. ‘ good, you are going to live longer than me but I want you to vow to me that one of his offspring's will kill the mage king. ’
Keats stood up and walked to his mother as then did a partial shift as he raked his claw across his sword arm then let the blood from the wound drip to his father arm. I swear on my honour as the future King of the shifters that one of late king Stephen offspring , me included, either through birth or through marriage will kill the mage king and present the head to your queen. ’a bright light shone from the king body as Keats backed off a few steps and went on his knees as he bowed to his father the way the shifters present were already doing.
‘ goodbye my love. ' the queen said as she stroke the king cheeks then kiss his lips as the light intensifies.
‘ bye father. ’ Keats said as he began to howl and the rest shifters followed his example until they started hearing others outside the castle howling too.
‘ the ascension will take place tomorrow at noon. Crown prince Keats. I am sure you can complete your mating before then. ’ the queen said.
‘ your Majesty, the king just died. Give the kingdom a few days at least to mourn. ’ Keats said in a protest.
‘ we can mourn when the mage king is dead. Until that time we need to show that we are not shaken that although our hearts has been killed that we can survive with no heart. In fact. I suggest that your first order of business to our people is to increase our soldiers and the first that other creatures will see is our heartlessness. It is time for the shifters to be feared again. ’
‘ as you wish, my Queen. ’ Keats said with a bow.
