4. Paranoid

CHAPTER FOUR  "I have to go to class," she mumbled standing up to return the book to the shelf.  She needed an excuse to get away from him.     "Oh! You mean to go home. Classes ended about fifteen minutes ago Hun," his shoulders were still shaking from obvious laughter.     She checked her wristwatch and sure enough, it was 4.15 p.m. Her parents would kill her if they ever found out she skipped all the afternoon classes.     "Romeo and Juliet huh? You do realize they died in the end, right? “He stated in his attractively deep voice. Attractive? Something must be entirely wrong with her if she could think someone emanating a vibe so dangerous could have an attractive voice.     "Of course. I don't really support the tragic ending but at least they did it for love," she found her lips explaining.     "I love tragic endings. There is beauty in tragedy Meredith Laurent," As he said those words intensely, Meredith couldn't shake the rising feeling in the pit of her stomach. She wondered whether his words had a double meaning or maybe she was just being paranoid.     She watched him walk out, her gaze following his every move before she snapped back to reality. Now more than ever she was convinced Ace Knight was dangerous and that he was someone she shouldn't even dare breathe the same air with. After placing the book back to the shelves she strode out of the now-empty library save for the librarian dosing off behind the pile books on his desk. The parking lot was almost clear when she picked her backpack from class. All the way home she had the dreaded feeling that someone was watching her but every time she turned to look around everybody was going about their normal business. Maybe her nerves were working overtime and she had Ace to blame for that.     "How was school?" her mum asked the moment she closed the door behind her.     Her mother, Mrs. Laurent, owned a grocery shop but having employed someone to help, she was always home early and didn’t have to wake up early in the morning. Her dad, on the other hand, worked as an assistant in the morgue at Dragon Street General Hospital. They were a pretty much happy family and that is the best thing one could ever hope for. Meredith had always been grateful for that fact.     "It was great. Did you know the Knights had another kid?" She questioned plopping on the chair beside her.     "Not really," she answered after quite some time of thinking deeply.     "Well, apparently they do and he joined our school today. His name is Ace and he seems maybe a few months or at most two years older than Brian," Meredith explained tugging back a strand of a black tendril.     "They have never mentioned anything about a second child since they moved here a year ago. Everybody always thought they had one kid," She could tell her mum was also surprised.     "I know right? Anyway I’m just going to head upstairs for a bit, probably finish up my assignments and take a nice, warm bath," she stated standing up.     "Okay though I’m surprised as to why you didn't rush to the kitchen today knowing you to always being hungry after school," She chuckled as she walked upstairs to her room at the far end of the hall.
