CHAPTER SIX
“He is such a piece of art,’ Vivian whispered in Meredith’s ear as they jogged on the running track that circled the football and cricket fields.
They both hated the open field gym class just like half the class. But the worst part for the past two weeks had been having to endure every class with Ace, which for the record was actually all classes. His presence was growing on her nerves and she was really trying to hold herself together.
“Yeah, right,” Meredith spat, looking at Ace racing way ahead of them.
“Look I get that you don’t like him for reasons that I do not understand completely but can you at least act like the fan girl you used to be every time we talked about Brian?”
“Fine. I’ll try. Now can we get back to running?” Meredith said.
“I’ll race you,” she sprinted forward, leaving Meredith behind.
“That is not fair,” Meredith shouted breaking into a run.
“See you at the finishing line looser,” Vivian shouted.
By the time Meredith was done running, Vivian was already rested quiet well. It was without a doubt that Vivian was way better at sports than her. Actually it was much safer to say she sucked at sports.
“I just don’t understand why you are much better at sports than me,” She complained plopping on the field, next to Vivian. She was breathing so fast as if she had just escaped death narrowly.
“And I don’t understand why I got you as a friend when you can barely pull through gym class. You are ever making excuses to be out of gym class,” Vivian said doing some stretch up exercise.
“Great work on the field today,” The girls both raised their eyes to stare into Justin Hamilton.
He was smiling down at Vivian. Meredith watched her best friend flush as she stood up straight.
“Thanks,” He shrugged his left eyebrow before walking away.
“Justin? Really? He is the coach’s son,” Meredith whispered amused.
“What are you talking about?” Vivian tried playing dumb but failed miserably.
“You have the hots for him. You literally blushed when he looked at you,” Meredith couldn’t quiet hide her amused chuckle.
“No, I didn’t,” Vivian quickly denied, pushing back her ponytail.
“Yes you did. All I’m just saying is that you need to be careful. Justin is a playboy and he will just break your heart,” she warned.
“Well at least I would tell my kids that my first heart break was by the coach’s son,”
“So you do like him? Oh God! I can’t believe you are the first one between us to actually like a boy,”
“I doubt that. You dated Danny Willows before he skipped town last year and you are the one who has been going on and on about Brian Knight ever since he stepped into this school,”
“Shut up!” Meredith’s face was tomato red.
They changed out of their gym clothes and drove home in Meredith’s battered jeep, making jokes all the way home. It had been two weeks since Ace even came close to her, and despite the revulsion she felt for him, she realized he may be not as harmful as she thought he would be. Why was she even thinking of him right now? Pushing Ace to the back of her mind, she turned towards Vivian
“Who are you texting?” She questioned noticing Vivian was busy typing on her phone.
“It’s a new number and he says he is…Justin Hamilton. Oh My God! It’s the coach’s son,” She giggled excitedly.
“Really? How can you be sure that it’s him?”
“Because he just sent me his address and invited us to a party tonight. Don’t even try saying no because I won’t take it. It has been a long week and since the weekend is starting tomorrow then we need some head start,”
“I was not going to say no. I just think it’s a little weird,” Meredith voice her honest opinion.
“How is Justin inviting us to his party weird? In fact we should be happy. At least some of the rich popular kids are beginning to take notice of us,” Vivian was a nonchalant girl who cared more about having fun than thinking about the aftermath of actions.
“How did he even get your number in the first place?” Meredith couldn’t quiet curb her curiosity.
“Who cares?” Vivian shrugged, the smile never leaving her face.
“Fine, “Meredith knew there was no way she could talk Vivian out of this, despite the bad feeling growing in her gut.
“I’ll pick you up,’ Vivian said as she stepped out of the jeep as soon as they arrived at her house.
“I’ll be waiting,” she could never have sounded any less enthusiastic.
Plopping down on the bed she sighed loudly as she rested her head on her joined palms while staring at the ceiling as though it held all the answers to the questions running through her mind at the moment. She didn’t understand why she had a really bad feeling about this particular party. Flipping on her side she stepped out of the bed to seat on her study table. She decided she could waste time reminiscing over something beyond her understanding instead of doing something much more useful like reading. Time flew by quickly as she worked on her assignments. She was almost done when she remembered she had to ask Vivian about the exact time she would be picking Meredith up. She was reaching for her phone inside her backpack when the sound of something hitting her window reached her ears. She couldn't move let alone breathe as she stared at the window.
The amount of fear rushing through her system was inexplicable as she swallowed in fear. The tapping intensified as her grip on her duffel bag loosened, her eyes fearfully darting around the room for a weapon in case she needed to defend herself. Annoyingly enough the only thing she could lay her eyes on, were her red six inch heels from Christmas last year. She raised one heel in the air as she cautiously approached the window but her bedroom door opened suddenly distracting her. She whirled round coming face to face to with her mum who had shock written all over her face.
“Why do you have a heel pointed at my face?” she inquired folding her arms.
“I was just trying them on,” that was probably one of the lamest lies she had ever come up with.
“On your hands? Anyway never mind. I was coming to call you down for dinner,” she explained heading downstairs.
