Chapter 9 The Proposal

1145 Words
"I will not have you disrespect your stepmother or hurt your stepsister like that," Charles said to her face with so much hardness in his eyes like he was speaking to a stranger. After he had managed to calm the situation down, he made his order, "You'll marry Jayden again-" "Dad--" " Just shut up and listen to me!" He snapped. "There's a reason you two were betrothed." Lauren was certain her mother wouldn't be so cruel as to let her stay in a marriage where she was no longer loved and even worse, where the second party was unwilling to try. This was purely her father's greedy intentions speaking. "The tires between our two families must continue. Lauren, you were given the opportunity and you mustn't let go of it now or else, I'll introduce your sister to that man and-" Lauren recoiled in shock at his threat but her father didn't stop there. "Your sister is very beautiful and she wouldn't waste time in seducing Jayden. You know she's even more beautiful than that other woman, Sophia and even better in character." But Lauren failed to see the difference between two whores. They were practically the same people and thanks to the event of today, Lauren no longer saw her face on Sophia. Their difference in character was a huge gap and it seemed everyone thought the same too. It seemed the news of the party reached her father's ears or else, he wouldn't have called her home so fast. "Is that really why you wanted to see me, dad?" She asked with a tightening in her heart but she knew the answer. He didn't even care enough to ask her what had transpired in her marriage and all he cared for was to continue to use the influence between the two families for his business. "Very well," she sobered up and said with a straight face, "I have severed all ties with the Williams family and that's final." Her father's face, however, didn't change, "I'd advise you better change that attitude." He put his hand in his suit jacket and brought out a black box. "Is that really what your mother would've wanted, Lauren?" She recognized the box before he even opened it, revealing the necklace. "Where did you get that?" She couldn't take her eyes off it. She had been searching for that necklace before she moved into Jayden's house. It was the only heirloom her mother had left for her. A necklace that could get her out of danger if she was ever in trouble. It was her mother's way of protecting her even after death in this world. The last time she saw it was in her bedside drawer but one night it suddenly disappeared. Of course, Lauren had raised an alarm and made a fuss in the house but everyone denied having entered her room and taken the necklace. She had always accused Ollie and Leia in her heart and never for once suspected that her father could be behind it. "Ten whole years I searched for that necklace," she clenched her fists. "How could you do this to me?" In Charles' opinion, to keep a dog wagging its tail, you better know its weak spot. He had long expected Lauren's rebellion and he was saving it for the day she would show her true colours. Now that she was trying to bite the hands that fed her, he would put her in her place. "Give it back!" She demanded with tears in her eyes. She never thought she would see the necklace ever again. "Not until you fix your marriage," he demanded, refusing to back down. "You don't care about the marriage, dad. It's the partnership and I can keep that coming. Since I already work for William's company, I'll continue to stabilise the cooperation and if I keep that up, they'll be no need for any marriage alliance--" "You're doing it again," Ollie screamed. "You're avoiding Jayden and all for what? I know this divorce thing was your fault. No! The marriage alliance will continue! Dad, make it happen! If she doesn't want to marry him then... Then I will-- f-for the family, of course." Besides Ollie's desperation to be with Jayden, Lauren didn't see a need for any marriage but her father saw his daughter's wishes and hoped to fulfil it. "Change of plans, since you have no intentions to get back with Jayden, introduce your sister-" "Don't be ridiculous, dad!" "It's either that or you say goodbye to your stupid heirloom-" "How the f**k do you want me to secure a marriage between two grown ass people?" She screamed at the top of her lungs. "If she wants him, she can as well go to him on her own two feet!" "Unlike you, your sister will endure Sophia's presence for the greater good. She will become Mrs. Williams and will make this family proud." Lauren didn't care, she just didn't want any part of it. Now hand over my necklace, that was her only concern in all of this. "You're a foolish girl, Lauren. You don't just let go of your home, you fight for it," her father spat but what did he know about fighting for things? He allowed himself to be seduced and treated her mother harshly until the day of her death. The three of them stared at her with scorn and she felt the pressure form their gazes. They all wanted one thing and she knew she could only give in just to keep them from bothering her. They were leeches whether they admitted it or not and seeing their faces was starting to drain her blood. "No!" She screamed. "I'm not doing it and that's final. Leave me alone! If you want him go get him yourself-" Now they stare at her like they've seen a ghost. Did she really have to say that out loud to shut them up? If she knew, she would've done so sooner- "I didn't mean to interrupt your family time." The male voice boomed behind her and she spun on her heels to see who it was. Leo was approaching and her heart dropped. "You never said goodbye so I wanted to make sure you were safe," he said, holding her gaze and searching her eyes like he wanted her to ask for help and be saved. "You dropped my daughter off, Mr. Williams?" Her father asked, sounding so calm and wet behind the ears. Of course he was well behaved now because William was standing before him. Since they were his weak spot, why didn't they just marry one of them! "But I ended up hearing an earful of your conversation. Mr. Brown, the alliance with our family will stand and as for a marriage, I will marry your daughter, Lauren.”
