The clearing seemed to brighten as Alpha Walker took my hands in his own, and the gentle glow
of fireflies lit up the air around us creating a soft, pale light that made his eyes shine.
I swallowed nervously - his hands were rough, but his grasp was warm and gentle; I couldn't
remember the last time anybody had shown me affection like that, and my breath caught in my
throat as I looked up at him.
"You're real..."my voice was a choked whisper and I pulled my hands away from his, leaving him
looking at me with a confused expression.
I couldn't stop myself from reaching out to stroke his cheek gently - I needed to feel his skin
beneath my fingertips to really believe that the man standing silently in front of me now was the
Alpha I had been watching for two days now.
He hadn't had a chance to shave, and his cheek was rough with the stubble that made him look
particularly appealing to me at the moment, and I closed my eyes to savour the way it felt.
It was ridiculous really - I had woken up a spirit in his Packhouse, but he couldn't possibly be
real. I had accepted that I was a ghost, but it still felt ludicrous that he might actually be here
with me.
His hand clasped my wrist gently, and I looked up at his eyes with a mixture of awe, terror and
confusion.
"Sienna..."
"I-I'm sorry..."I whispered, pulling away from him and staring down at my feet.
He took my hands in his again, and led me over to the tree he had been sitting against when I
first told him my name, before drawing me down beside him.
My hands were shaking, and I stared at them for a moment before at him again.
"Look at me."
He demanded gently, and I couldn't deny him. I met his gaze, and he rested his hand against my
cheek gently.
"I think... I think this is a dream."
He smiled, and leaned forward to brush my hair over my shoulder.
"It is," he sighed, "I'll wake up, soon, and you won't be real...I'll have nothing."
I frowned, and I reached out to clasp his strong hands gently.
"You have your Pack."
He pulled away, and I watched as his eyes welled up with tears.
"You don't understand..." his voice was choked, and I felt a pang of shame twisting in my guts,
"...I can't protect them... I...I've had to disappoint them so many times. They deserve better than
me..."
"You're their Alpha!" I gasped, needing him to know that whatever was going through his mind,
it was ridiculous.
He shook his head, and I felt my chest constrict as I saw the despair in his eyes.
"I'm not good enough for them... I couldn't even keep my own Mate safe."
"Lady Katelyn..." Alpha Walker's eyes widened at the sound of her name, and I immediately
regretted saying anything. He stood up and turned away from me, crossing his arms over his
chest and looking out over the clearing. "Alpha...I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you..."
Suddenly he whirled around, and his eyes flashed in the moonlight.
"How do you know her name?"
I stood, and pressed my back against the tree, knowing that I had said too much.
"I...I'm sorry..."
"Tell me," he demanded. I shook my head, and he lunged forward and gripped my shoulder tight.
"Tell me now!" I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, trying to think about what I was going
to tell him, but he laughed dryly and his hand dropped to his side. "Of course you know her name
- you're not real. You're just a fantasy..."
My heart sank, and he turned away from me and pressed his hands against his eyes.
"Don't say that..." I whispered.
He lifted his head and turned to look at me.
"Why? It's the truth. You're a figment of my imagination, something to distract me from the pain
of losing Kat...why wouldn't a woman in my own dream know her name?"
My heart ached to see the pain and confusion in his eyes, but I needed to make him understand.
"That's not what's happening here, Alpha Walker."
He shook his head, and walked away from me further into the clearing.
"I can't do this..." he murmured, before turning to look back at me. "You have to go..." he said,
his voice so sad that it was like a knife in my chest.
I shook my head.
"I can't go, Alpha Walker... I tried... the last time you were here I tried to run away from you but
the mist dragged me back and I know it sounds unbelievable but it's true; I can't leave this place."
He stared at me in disbelief, and then he shook his head and turned away from me.
"I can't do this..." he repeated, "I don't want you here..."
I frowned, and stepped forward, trying to make him understand.
"Alpha Walker..."
"I said go!" he yelled, "I can't deal with this... I can't deal with you... I can't even deal with
myself right now, and this is my dream. I don't care where you go, just... leave me alone."
I swallowed nervously.
"I can try..."
Alpha Walker whirled around and took a step towards me; his voice broke and he stared at me
with a pained expression on his face.
"Just go. Leave me alone, Sienna, leave me alone and let me dream of her."
